Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone has experience renting offshore powerboats (as far as going to Catalina):

http://www.boats4rent.com/rates_newport ... rates.html (http://www.boats4rent.com/rates_newportbeach_boatrentals_rates.html)

I just came across the site after wondering about it.

Do you need any special license(s) or permits to handle one of these boats? Any other regulations or limitations?

Is it generally worth it?

Thanks!
Jeremy

the boats they rent are not something you would want to take all the way to catalina. 18' with 50hp outboard you could run to cat in the morning with calm sea's but I don't advise it unless you have lots of experience with so cal offshore. Just my 2 cents

i def agree with that. we have a 17' boat but we have a strong 115 hp engine and it is still extremely difficult to make the 20+ miles back in the afternoon. If you really want to do this, you are going to need to get up very early and go over there which will take an hour or two and i really suggest getting a mooring or finding a good anchor spot on the front side and stay overnight. you wont want to come back in the afternoon. go fish, have fun, moore in avalon and go ashore at night and have dinner, etc. you will be happy you did.

a lot of experience is necessary to make the afternoon trips on a small boat. better to be careful.
