Hit up Castaic yesterday and had my best day of fishing yet this fall.
Picked up a used shad net last week for $30 and decided to try my luck at netting some shad for the first time ever. Maybe it was beginner's luck, but I was able to net tons of shad within just a couple hours and fished the rest of the day with both shad and plastics. I used plastics to help me locate the fish then switched over to shad once I found them....and once I found fish, it was ON! They were very tightly schooled up, so much to where I could cast 20 or 30 ft in any direction around "the spot" and wouldn't get bit.
Yesterday's totals were 50+ fish, all from only 4 different spots. Probably 30 were caught on shad, 20 on plastics. Nothing was caught deeper than 20 ft. In fact, there was one spot where the water was gin clear and there was no wind where I was able to do some sight fishing. Felt like spawning season almost.
Biggest 5 went for probably 15 lbs.... may have gotten some bigger fish if I spent time hunting schools of larger shad.
