The lake record for bluegill was broken on Friday when James Mehan, Winchester, landed a three-pound bluegill fishing chicken liver at the dam buoy line. Overall, the bluegill are still fair with quite a few quality fish in the one-pound range being caught. There has been fair to good catfish and striper action. The stripers have been best at the dam, the inlet, and main lake points on cut baits. Rogelio Asishio, Temecula, landed 10 stripers that weighed 26 pounds to three pounds fishing chicken liver at the inlet. Courtney and David Conway, El Cajon, landed four stripers and catfish on anchovies at the buoy line at the stringer weighed 21 pounds, anchored by an eight-pound catfish. The catfish action is best on cut baits and nightcrawlers. The largemouth bass action is fair early and late in the day with the best bite along the south shore and into the east end. Some topwater, but most of the action is in 15 to 30 feet of water on drop-shot plastics. No carp reports. Information: store 951-926-1505 or marina 951-926-8515.

This is not the Skinner record Bluegill, but a replica I made about 15 years ago of a 3 pound Bluegill that was caught out of Lake Perris. This will give people an idea of how big a 3 pound BG is. It's almost 3 inches thick. I posted this pic a while back too.

Jeff, that is some fish. I can only imagine what it would be like catching that monster on U/L equipment.
By the way, that's a very nice mount.

It's amazing that this guy is fishing for catfish and lands a record bluegill on LIVER!

WOW! Those are fat looking slaps! Jeff, what the heck is wrong with those fishes? Is it the bleeding hue of the camera's colors or the fish got some major water tanning in the dark depth?

No Leo, in some very clear lakes in the southeastern U.S., the bass and other panfish can get very dark, not sure if it is the acidic water (tannin) of old swamps or what. We occasionally catch large Bluegills out of LP that are almost black.

Pffftttt... a 3lb bluegill can't do anything. It's just a fat slob. Wait, come to think of it I've seen a 8" bluegill harass the crap out of a 5lb LMB before.

Ifishtoolittle, beg the differ, but using light or even ultra light setup for the gills, 3lbs is not something to push aside. They do fight hard, especially the initial point. They rip the line off the reels like you just snag a merlin, and I know how that felt. I got the 1.1lbs gills earlier on the band new ultra light, and man, it gave the run for my money for 7 minutes. 3lbs bass on another new microlight felt like a DD striper with the heavy setup. So, for us guys like to hunt for the gills on ultra light, 3lbs gills/crappies are pure excitement.

Thanks for the insight, but I was just messing around. Bluegills, hell any fish really, fight like crazy once they reach a mature size.

Nice catches Mike! Beautiful hue on the fishes. Now those look like they're in spawning mode? Jeff, confirm?

Man, I miss having a chunky bluegill on the line.

I can manage decent gills at my spots, but I need to get my arse over to perris or skinner.

Skinner is awesome!

The wife and I were camping in section B and I was up at the store when the guy brought it in. Now I've cought some nice Blue Gill across the country but I haver never seen a gill that big. IT WAS HUGE!!!

In my opinion...pound for pound "Bullgills" as I like to call them are the toughest fighters in freshwater. Maybe only a smallmouth come close.

Otay is known for them and I catch them on small chunks of liver as they love it.

Ever go catfishing and check your bait just to see nothing left but just a lil meat on the hook from that huge chunk ya tossed out?
