Guys and Gals
If going to the derby I'd suggest using nothing but big baits....either lures or plastics and not just PB or nightcrawlers.
Last years derby they paid the 10 biggest fish and I got 9th place with a 5.1 lb trout caught with a CD5 Brook Trout Rapala, which paid out $120.
Other big fish were mostly caught on plastic worms and lures and only a couple on baits.
Won't say which lake and where they were caught, but if they plant the same size fish as last years derby, chances of a 7 lber picking up a small chunk of PB will be very rare if a 3 to 7 inch artificial bait is offered instead....
Just sayin'.
Good luck to anyone going, first place cash prize could be up well over $1000.

Those lures will work, but at the derby you want to use big baits to catch the bigger fish, or have better chance of catching a bigger fish, IMO.
Or......use a size 0/2 treble hook with a golfball sized hunk of PB

Big Baits don't always catch Big Fish !!!! Don't always believe what hear.... I've placed a few times in this derby..... I will say artificials definitely outfish powerbait... with that said, someone always makes the board fishing with powerbait.... Fish how you fish best!!! Confidence is key... Hope to see you guys there!!! Good Luck

AMEN BROTHER! When fishes know they don't have much food to rely on, and what ever being tossed into the lake appears edible, they will jump the gun to grab it. I stay far away from powerbaits now. Expensive, kill fishes, and destroy pretty much the water habitats that we fish in. Take a bit of time, use Velvetta cheese, mold it the size of the largest corn size, and if you want it to float, add a bit of cork's powder/fine into the cheese bait as 40/60 in weight ratio for ultra slow sink presentation, or 25/75 weight ratio and you have a floating cheese cork. More powerful than powerbaits.

Ive caught my share of fish on pb but if there something better im all for it. Its just that it seems that pb is one of the best baits for fishing brite lake with. especially the last 2or 3 years.

Man you gotta tell me where the crap you got those. I went looking for some like 3-4months ago, went looking for lmb too for nada. I figured the site was just putting info for the sake of it. Never before would i have guessed that gills or lmb could be in one of those lakes. Could they possibly be in that back lake personally i never had luck out of the back lake and have only seen a few fish come from there but hey its worth a lookey. LOL now i have a new goal in life. sumojo where did you get those gills at though?

I dissagree, not always big bait.... big fish, especially for trout...

Last year, I took 5th place on a lure smaller than 3/4 inches..

But ya never know at that lake and those stocked fish....the kid fishin a ball of PB that has never fished a day in his life can catch the winning fish....

Last years prize for 1st I think was $1,500.00

I took $415.00 for 5th

That derby is actually challenging in the fact that you have hundreds of anglers and limited space…it’s like a local beach pier on the weekend…

But just consider it another one of those challenges that fishing has to offer…

Don’t quote me but I think there was around 1200 people out there last year, and the top ten single fish will take home a check..

Pretty hectic scenarios out there when you hookup a toad..

Last year I landed that fish on 2 lb test and he ran over and under 4-6 lines sending me down the shore to put my pole under and over’ !

We’ll see how this year turns out…should be fun : )

You're exactly right Gary. I showed up last year and saw a million people (exaggerated) there so I turned away and ended up fishing Apollo the following weekend...and still landed me some trout. I then spoke to a local who entered the derby and he told me there was about 1,000 anglers that year. Fo' get about it...!!!!!

All 3 lakes are inter connected but I do beleive they dump fish off in allotments in different parts of the lakes..

I'd call for clarification on that, I've never been there when they stocked

last year was fun. Was my first ever derby. Didn't win no prize but did come home with the days dinner. For those that suggest using lures, you must have more patients than I do (or skill) because even casting straight ahead 7 out of 10 times i was reeling in someone elses line. Also a reminder to anyone that is attending, don't trow in your line until the derby starts. I made that mistake last year and the whole lake seemed to jump down my throat.
GL to all that go.

Im ready for the derby this year. Last year I had no Idea what I was doing. The goal is to catch the first two or three with powerbait then go with my lures to get the rest of my limit.

HUH ? What ? ok.........

We use way too much plastics and left them in the water. Powerbaits = emulsified plastic resins + plastic sheeting (glitters). Have you notice the shoreline of both salt and fresh water for popular spots shimmer with glitters? Well, that's what happen when too much powerbaits have been used over the gears. Baitfishes eat this crap up on a constant basis. Then the game fishes eat the bait fishes. We eat the game fishes. Well, ultimately, we inherit the same craps that we catch them with..PLASTICS. This is the same for softbaits, which I rarely use, which is a mean to test out the effectiveness of the newer plastics vs my homemade edible baits that is just effective.

But, who am I to preach. Dock Rat preaches about the Salton Sea, so I attempt to preach about the harmful effects of existing plastics and additional loads of plastics we're shoving into our water bodies. By the way, check up on the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbons and the side effects on the human's organs for the water you're playing in, and you'll understand what I mean ;)

i took 9th place ($112) with a 2.7....hooked up 15 minutes into the derby on a white minnow. biggest fish was something ridiculous like 12 pounds...also caught was an 11 and i think a 7-8 lbr...fast and furious in the beginning, slow slow slow after the sun came up, some big fish pulled out tho...seen what i think was the 15lb cruising around a couple feet off shore.
go get boys, there still in there!!!

-good luck
