First of all let me explain that since I am new to the Pacific Coast, most species are new to me. However I have fished about 5 times in the past 2 weeks, and pulled something new out every trip.

So let's get started. Lately I have been fishing the Jetty at Del Rey, but yesterday I decided to try a new location. With a little suggestion from fellow member Dockrat, Lets just say that I fished somewhere between Redondo and Santa Monica Beach.

I went with my GF and 2 buddies from Downey. 1 of which had never been fishing and the other one hadn't been in 4 years. The boys and my GF used my 2 Daiwa Rods, set up with 8lbs test. I used my Okuma with 12lbs test. We Brought 1/2lbs of Squid, and 1/2lbs of Anchovies.

We stayed from about 7pm-1am and the NEW spot was.....AWESOME.
My buddy who had never been fishing cast out with a piece of anchovie, and as he was walking back up the rocks, got a nice hit. I told him to set the hook, and REEL! It turned out to be a nice sized yellowfin croaker.

Anyways,

The Anchovies didn't work very well after the croaker, squid seemed to be doing better tonight. We lost a lot of our bait to rats, and i gave some to some fellow fishermen.

I caught 2 small staghorn sculpin within the first hour

I then ended up catching a Thornback

I then get my first good hit of the night and I catch a 20" width Bat Ray, and within 30min I catch my second one.http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd173/Mr_Dunev/FISHING/DSCF0919.jpg
http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd173/Mr_Dunev/FISHING/DSCF0922.jpg

I send my line out again, and after another 20min I hear the Bzzzz of my drag, and end up pulling this little guy. Just found out it's a Horn Shark

The end of the night comes, and I pull out another Bat Ray, the best fighter yet. 32" long and 21" in width. I would say around 7-8lbs, but who knows.

The 3 rays and the little shark, were all caught on the same 2 pieces of squid, on my halibut rig. Had to rip off the bait at the end of the night, it was still good enough for a couple more casts.

It was a nice quiet, slightly windy night. Met a couple nice fisherman. With 3 new species for me, it was definitely a great night. If anyone reads this, and is interested in joining me for some late night fishing PM me.

best,
Lucas

You sure do attract those Shovelnoses, lol! Awesome night! I don't think I've ever seen anyone catch a Rockfish off a dock or shore only on the Deep Sea trips. I am gonna hit you up soon for an evening session, I think for sure Sunday.

That is a Sculpin, huh. I did use to see those get caught out of the surf at the Tijuana Rivermouth in Imperial Beach. The river runs thru a protected estuary but Surffishing by the mouth is ok as far as I know. I dont think they get very big.

For anyone that surfs.. The Tijuana Rivermouth(The Bocario) RIPS!!!!

Haha I guess I only got 1 out of 3. Thanks for the info. I don't feel too bad, condsidering if you google cownose ray, it looks just like a bat ray, and the sculpin does sort of look like a rock fish.

Thanks again for the accurate data! I'll edit the O.P

We used to call staghorn sculpins as bullheads up in the SF Bay Area when I was a kid. Thanks for the report!

Yup, also called them mudsuckers and millers thumb...although I only heard them called millers thumb just a couple times before. My dad used to use them for catching HUGE stripers in front of the PG&E Power plant in SF.

I heard when they get bigger they can be tasty

Bullheads or Stripers? Ive never seen a bullhead bigger than maybe 6". Stripers on the other hand, yeah they were tasty :) My dad would steak them out, and grill, fry, or stew them. I was about 6 or 7 and the stripers my dad used to catch were almost bigger than me at the time.

Sculpin, they have to be over 10" to keep(which is rare), but the fellows at Johnny's sports shop in Pasadena said they were a tasty treat.

oh yeah, the scorpion fish is what you want. I dont think you want to eat a bullhead..lol
Be careful though, their spines are poisonous (scorpionfish). The fillets are a tad bit above bite size, but man they make awsome fish tacos!!!!

Mmm Fish taco's. My gf and I have been talking about making fresh ones for weeks, but I don't think anything I catch around Santa Monica/Marina Del Rey is edible. I see all sorts of signs warning for contaminated fish. Wouldn't mind Halibut tacos either

I'll catch a legal one eventually, from shore since I don't have a boat.

Thats going to take a few years with out some crazy luck. The tradition has been limiting out on sculpin the last couple trips if you want to try that.
