My son and I participated in the 2011 Cast ( Catch a special thrill ) our first time doing the event and to say we had a great time is a understatement.
Our fishing partners for the day were Mom and son, Theresa and Sammy Fletcher.
The morning started very early for the staff and Boat Captains and first mates, the event staff had everything organized well Shout outs to Lori B. and Eric R. and Lifeguards Sarkas and Johnny and tons more who's names escape me.
Shirts and caps were handed out, coffee and donuts apples and oranges, my son picked up a banana and I told him about the possible jinks but figured there was such a good karma around this event it wouldn't hurt us.
Saw some old friend and some FNN'ers, Jeffery and his Mom, Said Hi, Butch was there and shared some info about whats been going on at the lagoon recently, i hadn't been down there most of the summer.
The const. on the new ramp is ahead of schedule so the the late fall and winter action is looking good for boat action.
The kids arrived around 7:30 and after the Capt's meeting with the Cast Director the paring off of fishing buddies started. and boats headed out.
Sammy and Theresa are from Sun Valley, Sammy is 7 years old, a tackle box and fishing poles were provided to the kids along with some baits and Butch had brought a big bucket of swim baits for the kids.
We ran down to the area around the old ski dock while alot others were by the swim beach.
The water was cloudy and there was alot of weed growth under the surface, lot of small bait, this was the key to our bite as were though small kastmasters and jerkbaits.
Sammy's rod was the first to get bit on the nitecrawler, the fish though the hook but not before a couple of good pulls that Sammy got to experience for the first time.
Soon there was a good number of boat around the area and hoots and hollows were heard as the kids were getting fish.
Jr. hooked a small bass on the kastmaster and we got Sammy to help real it in and he got to feel what the fish felt liked, a couple more small fish were caught and then there was a boil aways from the boat and I got the cast close to it and got our best fish of the day, got Sammy reeling on it and got it into the boat and in the live well for pictures at the dock.
Butch was close by and came over and shared his shad that he had made off the swim beach first thing in the morning and showed Sammy and Thersa what some of the fish the lagoon is know for, Butches kids had never fished before and what a way to break them in with some 7 pound plus fish caught on the shad.
The clock was nearing 11:00 and we started to head in for the awards ceremony and lunch of hot dogs and burgers.
Fish and picture were being taken by a staff photographer and Bugs bunny was there also, big effort on the person in the Bugs Bunny suit, it was very warm....
Sammy and David and me got our picture taken with the fish and we let him go at the dock to meet up with the rest of the fish caught that morning.
The lifeguards got out the rope to help guys retrieve there boats and trailers due to the sandy beach launch ramp, so it took awhile to get the boats out.
The Kids and everyone went up to the covered benches above Paradise cove and volunteers had the barbecue's going as everyone had a good appetite from the morning fishing session.
The Plaques were made up with pictures of the kids and capt. and first mate, this was a neat deal, names were called up and the Capt.'s were able to hand the plaques to the kids.
After the awards were handed out a raffle was held and more goodie were handed out.
This was my first time participating in this event and won't be my last, it felt really good to be able to help out the kids and there parents go fishing, something they normally wouldn't be able to do.
I'd like to thank all folks that put the show together, there are a lot of behind the seine people doing this and I really believe that this is a great charity for all to get involved with...
Thanks again, Dave and Dave Jr.
