Late Report...

Well went up to the Bishop Creek area and stayed up at Four Jeffrey. The trip was amazing as always. It was the girlfriend, dogs, and I. I believe we ended the trip with around 104 trout released. We fished the typical spots Bishop Creek, North Lake, Intake 2, Lake Sabrina, and ventured to Convict Lake and Rock Creek Lake as well.

At North Lake the bite was wide open. We pulled them out one after another using the fly and bubble. Rock Creek Lake was a bust as always for me, but one day I will catch a fish there. Lake Sabrina was by far the most productive. We rented a boat for a 1/2 day run and managed to catch 9 on the troll then parked at the inlet at the back of the lake. We C&R'd 45 trout on WoolyBuggers back there in a 2 hour period.

Here are some shots from the trip...

Nice pics and report. I've never been had much luck with the fly and bubble. I've read and heard about how to rig and work it, but still no success... Do you have any tips on how I can score my first trout on one?

Nice pics and report. I've never been had much luck with the fly and bubble. I've read and heard about how to rig and work it, but still no success... Do you have any tips on how I can score my first trout on one?

Well my approach is pretty simple. I use the standard issue UL spin setup. I use a small clear bubble above my swivel with around a 6' 2# leader. Depending on the fly I will either fill the bubble completely up or leave it half full.

With WoolyBuggers, Streamers, or Nymphs I will often fill it all the way up. I cast it out and count it down so that it drops. I give it a quick tug or two to get the slack out of the line and to ensure the fly it trailing behind the bubble (sometimes they get caught up). At North Lake I would do a 5,10,15, 20, and 25 second count to find where the trout are hiding. The retrieve I typically do is a very very slow one. This allows my WoolyBugger to stay low and not rise up. If I feel some short strikes I will pause for 5 seconds and wait for the followup strike. Once I find the depth and presentation they like it just a matter of repeating it.

On dry flies or top water creatues (such as ants and the like) I do a bubble half full. I do the same cast and slow retrieve. I will give it an occasional twitch if needed. I have found many times on top water I get hit on the cast. As soon as my fly or ant hits the water I give it a tug to remove slack and whamo, fish on.

If nothing is biting change the presentation like you do with a lure. There are some lakes I seem to not be able to get a good trout on the fly and bubble. Places such as North Lake, South Lake, and Sabrina are great training grounds. They have good success rates and allow you to gain confidence in this setup.

Hope this helps a bit.
