Well, my journey started back on Tuesday. I had been reading the reports from the previous weekend and was bummed I couldn’t get out, but happy that I was spending time with my wife…:Smile:
I decided I would give it a shot at gray light. I arrived at 6:10 to clear water, minimal salad, small swells, 65-66 degree water, and an incoming low tide.
I was really pleased with the conditions but it was looking to be a bad day catching. I had only 2 bumps and I farmed something nice in 2 ½ hours…:mad:
I was heading South the whole time throwing a LC110-Sardine. I decided to head back North, after changing my LC, to a Salty Pearl White.
Just as I was getting back to the spot where I farmed the good sized fish…BAM!!!!! Hook-up and it’s on!
It starts pulling line and heads to the right. I am reeling and following at the same time hoping I have everything set right and secured properly. It stops moving, or is swimming to the shore, cause I have no pull on the other side…:Surprised::Smile:
Just as I was getting closer to the end of my line it took off again, but for a brief moment, I turn it around and am rewarded with my first fish of the day and skunk breaker;

It taped out at 21” but fought like a 26 or 27”er. I get my pics and let it go as soon as possible, hoping I can hook up with another, but that would be the only WSB for the day.
It would be another hour before I get another hit and it was a small BSP ( no picture).
I am almost to where my truck is parked, when I get that familiar “Thump”, it takes very little line and puts up hardly any resistance.
After getting my first glance I see it’s a shorty;
http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/gudgersfishing/Mobile%20Uploads/image-31.jpg
It was around 15” or 16”, but a flatty none the less…:Smile:
I toss it back in the water, check out my line, knot and drag and start casting again.
It wasn’t long before I get another “Thump”! I can tell that this one is a bigger model and am hoping it is a legal.
( There is this guy who has caught 23 legals so far and the rest of us can barely see him anymore…:Wink: )
It puts up a nice little fight but within a couple of minutes I land my 11th legal of the year;

It tapes out at roughly 22 ½” and I am stoked…
That would be my last fish for the day. I called it quits at around 1:30 and headed home.
Jump ahead to Friday,
I had a couple hours of work and started early so I could hit the down side of a high tide at 7:15.
I arrived to the same place as Tuesday at around 10:00 to even better conditions.
The waves were breaking at almost 200’ from shore, the water temp was 64-65, ultra clear water to 5 feet, 95% salad free, and the best part, swells were about 12-15 second intervals!
I wasn’t there 10 minutes and BLAM!!
I get a nice bend in my rod and it’s on. The fish takes line for a good 5 seconds and then stops, I reel in that line as quickly as I can, in case it wants to run again. It doesn’t, I get it to shore and it’s a nice Flatty;

It tapes out at 26” and I’m thinking it’s gonna be a good day..:Big Grin:
After the pics and hook removal, she’s back in the water in under 3 minutes.
I check out my set up and start casting again….BOOM!!
Not a minute later I’m hooked up again. Again, I have a nice bend in my pole and I know what it is;

This one was 25” and he didn’t hardly fight at all. Did my thing, got it back in the dink and kept on fishing.:Cool:
I continued to work this particular 150 yard stretch of beach for about an hour with another flatty, about 15”, before I started to work my way South.
http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/gudgersfishing/Mobile%20Uploads/image-49.jpg
I worked the area pretty good for an hour, with no results, and then walked back to my original spot.
After a few minutes I am reeling in my LC when I feel a bump, I keep reeling and I feel another bump, just as I pull my LC out of the water a young buck jumps out after my LC..
I quickly throw it out again, about 15-20 feet, and start to work it back real slow. Just as I lift my LC out of the water, you guessed it, this Hali jumps out of the water, does a flip and hooks himself on my LC, just above his head;:Shocked:
http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/gudgersfishing/Mobile%20Uploads/image-48.jpg
It was a 20”er and don’t let the first picture fool you, he hooked another treble in the mouth when I got it to shore.
It took me almost 5 minutes to get a picture of this guy, cause he kept flipping around. Definitely one of the best fish moments I have ever had…:Envious:
I was feeling a little hungry and debating whether or not to keep fishing. I decided to go get some food, pick up a couple of LC’s and get back to the beach by 3:00.
Move ahead to 3:30 and I am back on the sand.
I get there half way between low and high tide and notice the water changed color.
I talked with some surf cat and he said that it was probably waste from San Onofre when the power went out Thursday night…:EyePop:
Another guy said it was a red tide. I am color blind, but confirmed it the next day…
Oh well, I threw out my LC and started to fish. It wasn’t long before I hooked up to another flatty.
Not much of a struggle and I had it beached in no time;

It measured just over 22” and was my 14th legal of the year now..:Cool:
I threw it back in the water and kept on fishing.
An hour went by when I noticed one of the surfers was fishing. He was using live grubs and not getting anything. He finally came up to me and asked what I was using? I was in the middle of telling him when I got a quick stab on the LC.
It was a small Perch and his face just lit up. He told me he saw the fish I had caught earlier and wanted a Halibut for dinner…don’t we all!?:ROFL:
I told him to follow me and I gave him one of my LC’s. He said thanks and he would return it later. I said, NO, it’s yours to keep.
He said thanks and that he would pass it on…:Smile:
By the way, he fished for 15 minutes, before the waves picked up and he was back on his board. LOL!!!
I managed to get another short flatty and a short Sand Bass also;
http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/gudgersfishing/Mobile%20Uploads/image-44.jpg
It was now 6:30 and time to go home. On the way home I let a couple of guys know what was going on down here and that I would try again on Saturday for more flatties.
I received a text, from the Commander, but he said that he was going to fish locally and that we would see each other at Irvine.
Saturday morning,
I arrive at the same spot again but not until 9:15 because of the high tide. The water was really red now, according to one of the surfers, and I was wondering if I would have any success.
I was fishing for an hour before I got my first, and only, hook up of the day. He put up a slight struggle and was brought to shore in a minute or so;

It taped out at 23 inches and this one was going to be dinner for my Sister and her family, who was camping at San Clemente.
I stayed till about 1:00, worked a few stretches of beach and decided to hit up San Onofre.
When I arrived at San “O” the water was almost blood red. When I got down the trail I noticed the seagulls were eating something from the water, near the shore.
I started casting and pulled in a dead squid. Momma didn’t raise no dummy!
If there is a free meal something is going to take advantage of it, be it bird or fish.
I did try for an hour, for nothing, then packed it up to take my Sister her fish.
I visited for a bit then went over to Irvine to give my respects to Dana Rae ( Team 57 ).
It was a very good week and one I will not soon forget!
