In the past years I have caught lobster from the piers with some success, but this year I hope to try a different method, with a dinghy.

My question are...

* Do I need navigation lights on a 10' dinghy powered by a 6hp outboard
* Any special regulations for being at the harbors/ bays at night?
* Is San Diego Bay or Mission Bay a good option? I want to stay in around calm water.

Thank guys any info will help in gearing up for lobster season.

What city you in ? Solo ?
Need a PFD, 1 paddle or oars, whistle and maybe a fire extinguisher.
After X amount of length you running lights, look it up. 8', 10' 12' ?
Under X length you need a white light with 360 degree view.
(Kmart cheap 360 light zip tie on your hat) or pole with a anchor light.
I hooped in my 8' Portoboat 5 years ago and hooped 3 nets on a 9' longboard/surfboard once, got bugs too.

Yes on the CFs with a motor.
Not sure if true.
Got pulled over in San Pedro in a 8' Zodiac at night with a 2 hp Johnson.
Had a red (left) & green (right) glowstick hanging off the side up front.
They said 'where is your white all around light?' grabbed my flashlight they said I had to hold it up and said I didn't need the R & G lights on a vessel that length.
8' or 10' is the cutoff lenght ?
Kayaks don't need R & G lights.

Better off with R & G lights though.

Thank you all for the replies...

from what I'm getting from all of you, I definitely need navigation light(s). I just got to figure now if its a white 360 degree, green and red, or a combination. The key will be the 10 foot length of my Avon dinghy

I got the oars, life jackets, and a whistle wouldn't be a bad idea I guess (louder and higher pitch than shouting). As for the fire extinguisher, I think my size and type don't require it.

Well, thanx again guys! :Thumbs Up:

Its the final countdown to http://icons.iconarchive.com/icons/iconshock/stroke-animals/256/lobster-icon.png season!!!!!!!!

im not sure but i think all boats with a motor need fire ext

"Fire extinguishers are not required for outboard pleasure boats less than
26 feet in length, not carrying passengers for hire, without permanently
installed fuel tanks and which do not have spaces in which explosive or
flammable gases or vapors can collect."

source: ABCs of California Boating Law

After further investigation and since I will be power by an outboard, seems like I'll need both red and green side lights at the bow and an all around stern light( like the image below)

3 long words, Green, Right, Starboard.
3 short words, Red, Left, Port.
The whistle or horn is law. Put a plastic whistle on each PFD.
Remember the Titanic movie, the whistle saved her. :Titanic:

I think 3, flares or a flare gun over 16'
Air horn not needed on a 10' boat.

good tip on each pfd DR.

The whistle's at West Marine $2 - $3 are 3" x 1" x 1/4" flat.
They come with a strong string lanyard.
Not with a ball referee type.

Sound device is required.

You can buy a $10 air horn.
The air horn is not required just a sound device.

Air horns are big, they rust, can leak, they run out of air.
When the sheet hits the fan you grab your PFD and jump as your boat sinks.

Example; Your going to Catalina at night, you hit a log or telephone pole.
(I've seen them). Your boat is sinking fast, you need to radio SOS.
You have a 12" hole going down fast and 90 seconds to do all this.
Where the F in air horn. You grab your PFD and jump.
Put a $2.50 whistle on each PFD.

Going offshore you should have a ditch bag, wetsuit.

I have heard flare gun and air horn as well.

Your in SD, If you go 20 min South of Pt Loma into Mexican waters and have a Flare Gun OMG.
Flare Guns are illegal in Mexico, considered a firearm. You can be arrested and towed to Ensenada.
Just carry flares, they expire but are still good, put them in your car for a emergency.
Expired flares are a ticket.
