View Full Version : "Fire Power" S.W.A.T. Launches Major Offensive 9/17/11 - Plus FIVE Bonus Report!

Wingnut
09-17-2011, 06:55 PM
Came back in town for a business meeting yesterday and managed to squeeze in a session this morning. :Dancing Banana: Been pretty fortunate the past few weeks with a relatively light travel schedule allowing me to hit the water a couple of times. Hooked up with a couple of my S.W.A.T. Brothers for a recon at one of the A.O. that we haven't hit in awhile. As it turned out, it was a good call... :!!!:

Mission Data.
Duration: 6:15am - 10:00am
A.O: Classified
Conditions: Overcast morning. Incoming tide. Flat 1-2 ft swells in moderate intervals, placid & calm conditions. Water temp. approx. 68 degrees, water clarity excellent, very minimal salad, moderate baitfish presence.
Techniques: Throwing hard baits & swim baits.

Roll Call:
Arthur (Wingnut) S.W.A.T.
Mike (Bones) S.W.A.T.
Marc (BSP) S.W.A.T.
Nick (Dad) Guest
Bill (BamBam) Guest

The bite was so good, I couldn't keep track of everybody's fish count...
Here's mine:
(8) Short Halibut, (1) Legal Halibut 26" K.I.A.
(4) Calico Bass
(3) Yellow Fin Croaker

Fantastic conditions! :Big Grin: The best I've seen in quite a long time at this spot. Flat, clear, warm water with virtually no salad. Stepping into the surf at grey light, we could see baitfish scattering everywhere and predators going AIRBORN. :EyePop: We all spread out and started fan casting like mad...
Marc was the first to hook up... BIG fish peeling line off his reel. Then BOINK! Gone... bit off. I was on a bendo myself during the chaos...
I knew that it would be a good day of fishing when my first THREE casts was greeted with sharp bendos. :Thumbs Up: A chunky Calico Bass, a short Halibut and a fat YFC hit the sand for me in less than 10 minutes. I waved the rest of the guys over and told them to start hammering the spot I was casting to... one by one, they yelled "Fish On!" Unbelievable action for the first hour. Fish of multiple species hit the sand and most were shaken off and released in the surf without any pics taken. We couldn't wait to shake off the shorts and getting the lure back out there again.

The best experience that one can have in the surf is the "anticipation" factor... Yes, some of you guys know exactly what I'm talking about. The feeling in your stomach that you get during a retrieve when you KNOW that something is going to hammer your offering at any second. So much fun to see the fish follow your lure all the way up to the rod tip, lunges forward with a burst of speed at the last moment and hammer the LC. Some would turn away and shoot back out. You make a quick recast to the same spot and the fish comes back and hit it again and you stick it! Or slow rolling the lure over a trough and just as it passes over the "sweet spot", you are rewarded with a bendo. Doesn't get any better than that. I compare it to topwater fishing for Stripers... what a BLAST! :Big Grin:

We had multiple double hook-ups in the surf and I'm not talking about the Surf Perch variety either. :Envious: Marc & I got two double hook-ups and Mike & Bill got one too. Halibut doubles... good stuff!
Sessions like this don't come around very often, so we must enjoy and appreciate it whenever we are blessed with the experience.
I will certainly give thanks at Sunday morning mass tomorrow.

Mike, I know that today's hot action doesn't make up for that Black Sea Bass that you lost IN THE SURF on Friday. :EyePop: But I hope it helps to cool the sting... even if only for a day. Good fishing with you again my friend, I'll see ya next Saturday at Dana's Memorial event.

Marc, we picked right up where we left off didn't we...? hahahahaha :Big Smile:
Thanks for being my "wingman" today, we absolutely slayed them side my side this morning. We had two double Flatties hook-ups, that was fun... I've never experienced going over and under lines in the surf before, lol.
Good job on acing your midterm exams and I'm looking forward to more fun bantering and laughs the next time we hit the surf.

Nick, you are quite a trooper. You took a nasty tumble on some slippery rocks but carried on like a champ until the pain was too unbearable. Take care of that hand and thank goodness that it wasn't anything more serious... which it could very easily be. Hope to see you back in action very soon sir.

Bill, always nice to have a member of the original Pirate Crew joining us in the surf. Congrats on your first surf caught Halibut... and I'm sure a legal will follow shortly. Thank you for hooking all of us up with some Pelagic gear, that was VERY cool of you bro. Looking forward to hitting the water with you again sometime soon and I'll be in touch.

Have a good one everybody. Here's to a great Fall bite! :Big Grin:

This was a great morning and overall day. I laughed so much my cheeks started to cramp up dude!
You are such a goofball and you keep everyone laughing all day long.I for one always enjoy our outings the most because you are hardcore and quite simply LOVE TO FISH. The enemy didn't stand a chance with your new SICK Weapon of Butt destruction!
There is no flaking or laziness when it comes to fishing side by side with you that's for sure.
Thanks so much for the Sizzler food fest afterwords....I can barely move still !
Also thanks for reminding me of that huge Black Sea Bass.....
I will be haunted by that moment for many years to come

Marc and Nick....
It was great to see you two and I'll be Damned if you guys didn't show up before the sun came up. What troopers ....but I was thinking about it.....I think the very early morning awakening threw off Nicks Ninja like reactions and that's why he fell....LOL
Seriously.....Nick....Take care of that hand....Old guys like us don't heal very quiclky!
Thanks for making the trip out there guys and see ya on the sand soon.

Bam Bam Billy....We go way back and It was awesome to see you put your first surf halibut on the beach. I'm sure there is a big old legal on the near horizon for you bro. Can't wait to get you back out there and on the hunt. The fall bite is starting to swing so let's get er DONE!

20 legal flatties is absolutely insane, it's only September and the next spawning is right around the corner.
I am pretty sure we will see at least 1 or 2 other 30"ers before the year is through..
I liked the picture of your modified swim stroke...

Nick, I hope your hand heals quickly!

Marc, Glad to hear about your good grades.

Mike, I wish I could have been there but there will be other weekends Bro!!

What a day. Those are the days we all put in the time on the water to have. WIDE OPEN. It was like a cattle boat in the surf, five guys standing two feet a part, throwing baits to one spot. Thanks to all the SWAT guys.
Mark and Nick - It was a pleasure fishing with you guys. Nick, hope the hand is feeling better. I'm sure we will fish again soon. Mark give me a call.
Arthur - always a pleasure, you are a funny dude, you have everybody laughing. You got some kinda of deal with that ocean, man you were on fire. Talk to you soon, and can't wait to fish again.
Bones - My fishing friend. It was nice to have a good day, compared to the days we been having. Thanks for the invite, it was a blast. I will have to make it up your way more often.

Man, that was a really fantastic trip, and the kind that you're only rewarded with if you put in the effort to get to remote areas. The standard easy access deal can reward you with some ok fishing and even a solid fish if you do it enough, but the best Southern California surf fishing has to offer is only available for those willing to put in some serious effort. Glad I had some SWAT brothers out there to experience it with!

Arthur, what can I say, this was the kind of bite SWAT's been waiting for! WFO for the grey light, just like you predicted. Can't believe I got snapped off on my first cast of the morning by a big fish, and then proceeded to watch you slam 3 in a row while I retied. I don't think I've ever had a double hook up on surf halibut before, and let alone witnessing a total of 3 doubles happen over the course of the morning. I had a great time out there sharing stories and jokes on the sand (Helloooo!), and the WFO bite just made it all the better.

It was pretty hilarious though how we tried to get shots of us treading water in the swells only to have it glass out once we had the camera out.... I think Poseidon was messing with us!

I think the ending totals were 4 shorts + a torpedo for me, 4 shorts for Mike, and 4 shorts for Billy, plus or minus a short here or there. Really an insane bite, but what's startling is that there were so few legals in the population. Finally hoping this fall bite goes off at that AO, and I am definitely looking forward to more trips there in the future. Just hoping that the concentration of legals increases.

Mike,
Good to see you again buddy, and you've had a pretty fantastic few days of surf fishing. Lost a BSB, scored a nice legal, and then got into a WFO grey light bite... sounds great to me! I'm sure you'll continue on the roll as the fall bite gets under way, and the next trip may have to be to some of your favorite AOs.

Billy,
Great to meet one of the original Pirate Crew members, and I'm stoked that you got your first surf halibut at one of the more historical SWAT AOs. It's kicked out a lot of firsts and PBs over the years, and should continue the trend with you. Thanks again for hooking us up with some solid Pelagic gear, and we'll definitely be in touch. Keep Mike out of trouble, and look forward to fishing with you again!

Dad's hand is getting checked out at the clinic today. I'll post an update, but I'm just glad it wasn't worse. No fishing for him for a while though.

Awesome report. When I got the Arthur's message Friday night I had a feeling the bite was going to be good. I wish I could have been there with you guys. I was on active Dad duty yesterday (my sons ball games). You guys kept the enemy under heavy fire yesterday. Looking back on seasons of the past September is a good month for halibut. Great month for freshwater bass and stripers as well. Great time to be fishing. I got to get out there. As always well done guys.

So hey Mike what's the story with the BSB? Depending on size even a juvinile can be one tough enemy to defeat from the beach on light tackle (12-15lb line). Did the enemy get away with your weapon? Either way its just never easy dealing with defeat. If you capture a high profile enemy like that from the surf you deserve a medal.

Take care guys and keep it safe.....Tight Lines to all!

I had a feeling that the grey light bite was going to be off the hook Mike. Glad that you were in the thick of things with me. Now about that monster hali that you caught today... Damn dude, didn't I tell you that Poseidon owed you a big fish...? Consider it paid! :Envious:

Just walked in the door when the text came through.

What a great looking day in the surf Arturo,
Like I texted you this morning, I didn't see the message till this morning..:Rolls Eyes:
I already had other plans for the day with Sheila...:Big Grin: I love my wife!!!

Bam Bam, It is addicting....BEWARE!!!

Thanks for the great report and pictures,
Robert
<><
Robert, I predict that you will get your 30"+ this year! :Big Grin:
We all have a ,lot of catching up to do seeing what Mike (Bones) accomplished today. :Envious:

SWAT never fails to deliver, another epic report. :Thumbs Up:
Wow, I can only dream of a surf session like that.
Bones, tell us more about that lost BSB.
The Black Sea Bass that Mike lost was unreal... :EyePop: A once in a lifetime surf fish. I'm sure that he will tell the story in his report today... I guess you can say he had a pretty good day, lol

Awesome job guys, that session sounds like a blast.
The water looks frikin insane! You can wade out to your neck without a problem!
Good stuff. Sucks about the tumble nick, I know exactly where you fell brotha...dont feel bad, I've fallen there atleast twice and I mean HARD. Glad nobody was around :Secret: But whats even better is that it was nothing serious, well hopefully. Sometimes will a tumble like that, it hurts even more the next day. Take care of it sir.

I'm trying to see if I can get alittle break in the morning, if I can, u better believe I'm going to be here. :Envious:

Oh and yes Mike, more info on the BSB, from the surf too! that mustve been a sight!
Conditions was awesome Frank, just like you experienced on Sunday. Sounds like you got a little taste of the hot action too. See ya soon my friend.

That's an insane surf session there.
You guys killed it, SWAT rules the surf.
Hope the injury to Nick's hand isn't serious.
Thanks bro... I don't think Nick's hand was broken. Hopefully, it's just a bad sprain.

Danng those fish didn't stand a chance against Wingnut's custom LC niiiicceeee. @ Bones i approve of that picture ahhaha. Keep up the amazing reports!
Thanks bro... Landlocked Butts are easier to catch than the ones that lives in the surf.

Arthur, I couldn't wait to get home and check this post out..........Simply amazing!

When I got your text this morning I was looking at the fish count you reported and that there were five of you on this assault I thought wow! Great day for the SWAT Team then I noticed that the fish count you gave me was just yours!

You guys had what I would say was an epic day on the water Good friends, Good Times and well, way better than Good Fishing. Great job guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:
I couldn't keep track of all the count with the hot & heavy action. I just know that fish were hitting the sand every few minutes in multiples, FUN stuff! See ya Saturday my friend.

Hey Wingnut!
What can I say............S.W.A.T rules!! :Fishing Catch:
I really enjoyed reading your fun report!
SP Dan <"))><
Thanks Dan... good luck hitting the new A.O. this weekend.
I want to see a legal Halibut report from you soon! :Big Grin:

Bill, really good sharing the sand with you again buddy. I'm glad that you were there with us to experience that awesome bite. Don't get spoiled, a day like that don't happen very often... :Envious:
Thanks again for hooking us up with the Pelagic goodies, we appreciate that very much. :Big Grin:

So true Marc, we do out in the extra effort, that's for certain. Beat fishing the jetties and flat waters of LB anyday. Plus, the fish are better to eat, lol. Like I said, I's rather catch a 24" Hali in a place like Santa Barbara while enjoying the scerey bonus, than to pull out a 30" in polluted waters somewhere else.
Thanks for the text update of your Dad's hand... good to hear that it's feeling better and he's on the road to recovery. :Big Grin:

thanks another great read
Thanks for taking the time to read it...

Arthur,
Great report, fantastic read :Thumbs Up: and once again SWAT setting....no, no....raising the bar of standard ... :UDaMan:
The "goofin off" pic  careful, you might bust out in spontaneous flight with that Superman type pose!

Arthur, Gentleman, nice work, thx for sharing.......:Worship:
Thanks John, S.W.A.T. doesn't set the bar for anybody else but ourselves...
Keep up the nice job out there... good to see somebody so motivated and show passion for our sport. :Big Grin:

Great Caeser's Ghost, what a day!..and with so many great team members...Haven't gotten out lately but sure got a great buzz off of your sea assault..
Arthur, you have definitely out done yourself in the customizing department..it's like seeing the latest Lambo unveiling...killer, baby!
LOL, Sid... it's not exactly the unveiling of the Lambo Aventador.
Haven't hit the surf with you in awhile, let's see if we can make that happen sometime soon.

way to slay you swat guys.............

cm
Thanks Mike, good luck with the Fall Crappie bite.

:UDaMan: on that report.
3 cast, 3 fish, 8 Butts OMG Arthur, on fire.
Congrats to the rest of the crew :Thumbs Up:

Mikes Bonus Pic  :Dancing Banana:
DR
Decent fish count...

JerryG
Family always first Jerry... those fish aren't going anywhere.
Yeah, i was looking back at my log from last year and September was a good month. :Big Grin:
Hopefully, the Fall bite will be a good one! Really great sharing the sand with you again today my friend.

Awesome, simply awesome... !!!!

You can just Feel the Energy & fun in this (and all SWAT) report.... Cant deny that!!!!
Great read all....

Thanks Frank. :Big Grin: We has a blast... good times!

That is one sweet looking custom LC Art, very cool. I think the fish found it irresistable. That action must have been insane bro, wish that I was there. We were camping at Skinner this weekend, now i know why you didn't stop by, hahaha
Damn, those food pics looks good.
Sorry I didn't come and hang out with your guys Binh... honestly, I totally forgot! They say that the memory is the first thing to go... Bummer that the fish at Skinner didn't cooperate... sure wish that you were in the surf with ne bro.

One word... bitchen! (probably will be edited!)
Totally bitchen... lol

I really like that customized LC. Looks like you guys had a great time.
Thanks Anthony... congrats on the big Halibut bro, great video! :Thumbs Up:

Arthur
Everything about your report are just beautiful. Beautiful custom LC, conditions, fishes .. and the food .. yummy. Thanks for the report. Wish I have a session like that on day.
Thanks Dylan... you've had some great sessions yourself. Get back out there!

Another epic report! A stellar day on the water with friends. Hard to beat that action. Those new LC customs are SWEET!!! Thanks for the report and pics and I hope to see you Sat. at the Vine for Dana's tourney.
Thanks man, looking forward to meeting you this Saturday.

Damn dude, you should contact Lucky Craft and have them put together a "Wingnut" Surf Series of lures.  :!!!:
Total anihilation of the enemy population, awesome display of SWAT fire power.

I got your text on Mike (Bones) massive Halibut this this morning, HOLY CRAP!!! Can't wait for the report. :EyePop:
They need to contact ME...  :Envious: jk
I can't wait to see Mike's report too... I was on the phone with him for an hour after he landed & released his PB Hali... his voice was still shaking, lol

S.W.A.T. Mop-Up Mission. Tuesday 9/20/11

Also... keep an eye out for Mike's (Bones) report. It will blow you away!  :EyePop: :Envious:

After the amazing bite that we encountered on Saturday, I decided to stay in town for a couple of extra days... To take care of some local business and giving me an excuse to hit the surf again. :Envious: Damn, I hope my "Boss" doesn't find out, he's kind of a jerk... lol

Hit up the same A.O. this morning for a few hours with my fellow S.W.A.T. member, JerryG. Really good fishing with you again brotha Jerry, been too long my friend. Great catching up with you and I really enjoyed the good conversation & laughs. :Big Grin:

Bummer about your first hook-up in the grey light Jerry. The same thing happened to Marc on Saturday. 1st or 2nd cast of the morning, instant hook-up, drag peeling... then gone, bit off! I'm sure that it was a big White Sea Bass.

Conditions once again was great! Flat swells, warm & clear water, minimal salad and light bait fish presence. The fish weren't as aggressive as they were on Saturday, but still pretty active. The bite wasn't as hot, but pretty steady throughout the morning. We picked off fish at a steady pace as we worked the long stretch of beach. Only one legal Halibut and lots & lots of shorts... all caught on various LC's.
Not bad for a 4-hour session. :Big Grin:

Fish count (All Released).
JerryG: (6) short Halibut, (2) Smelt
Wingnut) (10) short Halibut, (1) legal Halibut (23"), (1) Calico Bass, (1) YFC, (1) BSP

We must have caught 5 or 6 Flatties that are just short of legal status in the 21+" inch range today.

Came back to the car and had 4 missed calls and a text from Lieutenant Bones.
Gave him a call on the drive home... Mike had himself quite a morning session... look for his report! :EyePop:

The bite is heating up... go for it people! :Big Grin:

Arthur (Wingnut)

Life is the first gift, love is the second, and understanding the third.

Thanks Arthur it was great fishing with you my friend. I wish I had more time so we could have hit the other spots. It was a nice day to be on the water. Arthur brought up a good point that most people (non-anglers) live their lives never realizing the amazing places and great adventures that exist right in their own backyards. Can't wait to get back out there I sure would love to have another shot at that first fish.

I was glad to hear the news that Lt Bones had captured a BIG fish. Well done Mike! It helps provide a little redemption. We have come under the fire of some heavy hitters over the past week which has resulted in defeat and loss of artillery. Careful guys there are some BIG enemies lurking the front lines right now.

Bonus Report #2
S.W.A.T. Extended Mission. Wednesday 9/21/11

I decided to stay in town this week to hit the surf for a couple more times to take advantage of the recent hot bite. The "Boss" won't be happy, but oh well... lol  Had a fantastic session on Saturday, followed that up with a great trip on Tuesday and I was hoping for a similar session today... BUT alas... all good things must come to an end.

Mike (Bones) called me up and asked if I wanted to hit up his A.O. today to see if we can coax another mega Hali to play. :Envious: I said, why not, I'm already in trouble with the Boss so let's do it! Exfactor aka The Fishing Yoda gave me a call and wanted to drive down from Santa Barbara to join us. Come on down Mikey! :Big Grin:

We hit several spots in the Malibu area for a few hours and had a nice, relaxing lunch afterwards. Got Mikey on the road back home before traffic begin to build up.

Conditions was pretty decent. A bit more swelly than the last few days, but still good. The salad condition definitely got worse though as some spots were difficult to fish. Mikey & Mike had a pretty good morning, but I stunk it up big time, lol  Didn't even get a hit on the LC all morning.

Fish count - All Released.
Exfactor: 2 Legal Halibut (22", 23") 1 short Halibut
Bones: 1 short Halibut, 1 short White Sea Bass
Wingnut: :Skunk:

Mike, thanks for being our guide today. Always great fishing with you my friend. You were still on cloud 9 and were smiling all day from the high that the big Flattie gave you. :Big Grin: Congrats once again and I'm sure an even bigger Hali is on the way. See ya Saturday!

Mikey, thanks for making the long drive to join us today. You did great! Two legal Flatties... You are now on the board! :Big Grin: Good call following your Yoda instinct and finding the fish at grey light. My Spidey senses failed me today. My turn to head North to fish with you buddy...

Thanks for checking in everybody, enjoy the rest of your week.
Maybe I'll see some of you guys at Dana's Memorial Event at Irvine Lake this Saturday.

Arthur, sorry about the skunk, but it's got to happen once in a while! You'll be slaying flat fish again in no time.

Mikey, you managed to pull out 2 legals in one trip while Arthur gets skunked. You truly are a Surf Yoda! Great job out there!

Mike, even though it didn't match up to your prior trips in terms of quantity or quality of halibut, you still managed to catch an elusive WSB from the surf!

I still sacrificed 2 LC's in the process for my efforts, one right in front of Arthur. He looks at me, shakes his head, say's "I'll give ya another Mikey" when my instincts were to strip down, and save the Hamilton. If there was a contest for luckiest fisherman to land a fish, Bones would win hands down. Bet 99 out of 100 times his landing zone would fall short lol. Finished patching the waders again today, so hoping the low pressure doesn't ruin the fishing this weekend. Gonna get Arthur on some lobsters this season, maybe see if the lc works at night 2.

Bonus Report #3
Redemption... Skunk be GONE! Saturday 9/24/11

I decided to stay in town for the rest of the week because I was planning on attending Dana's (Fisherman 57) Memorial event at Irvine Lake. The plan on Saturday was to hit the surf early, then head out to the event in the afternoon.

I was itching to redeem myself for my pathetic performance on Wednesday fishing with (Mike) Bones & (Mikey) Exfactor. I didn't even get a single strike the entire 5+ hour session. The stench of the Skunk was lingering on me for the past couple of days and I knew the only way to wash it off was to have a successful session in the surf.

I got a text from Robert (Murrieta Angler) on Friday afternoon telling me that he was lighting it up big time with the legal Halibut in his A.O. and I should pay this spot a visit right now. :Secret: He was racking up multiple legals in just a couple of days. Numbers like that can't be ignored and Robert have always been dead on with the intel, so I made the last minute decision to head South for the morning. It's gonna be a very LONG day!

Got to the drop zone at grey light to heavy overcast and drizzle. I like it... as Surf Master Mike (Kichigai1) once told me, when it's overcast outside, get your a** to the surf. Water feels warm, swells 2-3 ft in 10-12 seconds intervals, water clarity good with minimal to moderate salad. I saw lots of birds diving far out of casting distance but did not see any baitfish in the surf line. Interesting, saw a few dead Squid washed up on the beach (bait sized).

To get rid of Mr. Stinky, I pulled out all the stops...
Put fresh line on the reel, broke out a brand new LC, and rolled out the S.W.A.T. assault vehicle for the "Skunk Killing" mission. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/004-7.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/007-4.jpg

Started working the surf in the grey light and promptly nailed three short Halibut in the first 20 minutes or so. I was thinking to myself... oh yeah, they're here and they're active. :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/009-4.jpg

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%2010/011-4.jpg

Then a long period of casting and not a bump on the LC...
Nearing the cut off time for my session, I started working my way back towards the car.
I thought hey, it's not a very productive session, but I did manage to get rid of the Skunk.

Then it happened...
The water was pretty clear and at times I could see my LC running in the swells as it was coming in. On a retrieve, the LC was only about 10-15 yards out and I could see it making it's way back to me through a wave. Then all of the sudden three WSB appeared about 10 feet to the left of the LC... one of the fish saw the LC and shot right to it, in a split second, it hammers the lure. :EyePop: I must have relived this moment in my mind dozens of times because I have never seen a WSB in attack mode before. I learned a lot just from the visual experience. I've always said that no matter what your skill levels are, you still learn something new with every trip you take to the surf... I know that I'm still learn new things myself and it's great. :Big Grin:

I will never forget this sequence... The fish hit the lure, then as if it realized that it wasn't something edible, stayed there suspended in one place in the surf shaking its head violently as if trying to expel the lure from its mouth. All this happened in a split second, totally caught me by surprise and I was a bit slow to react. I swept the rod upwards for the hookset and the fish made a sharp turn and took off straight out into the open surf on a blistering run... taking about 30+ yards of line. Now, those of you who have caught WSB, know how they fight, after the first strong run or two, they pretty much pack it in and give up. As was the case here, after the first long panic run and a brief tug or two, the fish came back into the immediate surf line and washed up to the beach with an incoming wave. The battle lasted no more than 2-3 minutes. Not my PB best of 36", but a very solid fish. Somewhere out there, the wolf pack that roamed the surf a little earlier, will be reporting that one of its members, is missing in action.

Look who decided to drop into the A.O. as I was on the evac.

Arthur,

That is one awesome WSB! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing you tell me about seeing the wolfpack in the wave and seeing one take off after your LC........That was amazing to hear and I'll bet even more amazing to see. Especially when you were the one holding the rod with the LC that was being attacked!

I just want to personally say Thank You for making the trip back out to Irvine for Dana's Memorial Tournament. I for one appreciated it very much and I heard many of Team 57 commenting the same. It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with three of SWATs finest. You, Mike and Robert made a whole lot of people happy! Thanks guys.:Thumbs Up:

Arthur,

It's just like you to catch a legal WSB after a skunk session! I can imagine that it would have been an incredible site too see a WSB slam your LC in the waves. I'm haunted by a similar one that didn't have the same happy result with a surf YT from last year. I had a feeling you were going to do well on Saturday, and I regret I could not be out there with you. Instead, I got to enjoy squid fishing and all right surface fishing on a 3/4 day. Still waiting on pics, but I definitely slayed the squid.... gotta say there were some moments on that trip that would have provided a lot of laughs and jokes if you had been there to see (Awww, I just got inked.... WHY!?!?!?!). September has been a banner month for SWAT, and I hope it continues on to be a great fall bite.

Looking forward to fishing with ya again man!

Hey Arthur another high profile enemy added to long list of captures for the year. It certainly has been a tough year for the enemy forces.. Not to mention Robert added another legal to the list.. Well done my friends. It appears that the event at Irvine was a success. Let me know you get back to town may be we can plan another week day session. If have swell conditions are like we had early last week I will bring out the kayaks so we can attack the enemy from behind the front lines.

You stick a legal 30in WSB and Mike gets his 36in flatty all in two weeks time. There's a reason that SWAT owns the surfs with its reputation, and you just solidified it that much more. Bonus Report #4
S.W.A.T. Red Tide Encounter - Saturday 10/1/11

I like doing these bonus reports... quick & easy.

Headed far South this morning with a few of my S.W.A.T. brothers. Hit a couple of A.O.'s and fished hard. Conditions was great except for the red tide. Warm water, flat swells, minimal salad. The red tide at the second A.O. was a bit of a surprise. But it was pretty far out beyond the immediate surf so wasn't that big a deal. Would love to hang around until nightfall to see nature's light show in the surf, but had to get back home. Slow pickings throughout the morning, but we got a couple of barely legal Flatties. Always good to get out while I still can and enjoyed sharing the sand with good friends. :Big Grin:

Sid, Robert & Frank... we didn't light it up today, but the catching part, is only a bonus. The true reward is spending time with my S.W.A.T. Brothers... we are truly blessed.

Enjoy your weekend everybody!

Fun times, my friends.

Arturito: A pleasure once again...the laughs never fail to come by, and as always every outing is a new learning experience, this time with my rod. I know, I know, you always say carry a backup! Well, I do carry a back up, an extra spool, but not a rod lol. Lesson learned and I will now start bringing my second rod like I use to. The second A.O was a little tricky, but now we know what to look for eh? :Secret: Too bad Sid beat us to it, lol. Good times.

Sid: It was nice finally meeting you sir! heard many things about ya, but couldnt manage to share the sand with you until yesterday. Way to nail that legal hali brotha, very well deserved. Hopefully, we get to share the sand more often. Oh, and I didnt know you were such a good guy that you would stop by and water the dry tree's.

While I set the hook on the hali, I yelled "fish-on" and ofcourse we start cheering, etc, etc...I begin to reel in the hali and it was actually pulling pretty strong, I for sure thought it was going to be a legal. Once people saw the rod bending behind me, a little crowd of people began to pile up. I landed the hali, pulled him up to where the water wouldnt reach me and took off my hat, put my reel in it and laid down the rod. As I was taking off the LC, I looked up and said please be careful and not step on the Rod or get yourself hooked with the lure. Placed the lure on the side of my rod, close to the reel, took off the measuring tape, taped it, took out the camera, took a pic and then griped it and took it back to the water. Well, as I was taking it back to the water, some of the kids decided to follow me to release the fish and ofcourse...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y67/artistik_pr00f/DSCF0546.jpg

I managed to fish this way for the rest of the session, about 3 or 4 hours more. It sucked. I couldnt feel the lure swimming back and forth and the taps werent as detailed as before.

I'm taking it back to shimano tomorrow morning in hope that they will replace it...

what sucks even more is that I couldnt even single out any of those kids, there were a good amount of them. I just kept my mouth shut and let it be...lesson learned. Kids get close = hit em with some ninja kicks.

Till next time guys.

Nice variety of suspects including a couple legals to add to the list. As always well done guys. Thanks for the invite(s) Arthur I wish I could have joined you guys family commitments (active Dad Duty) have kept me off the water for the weekend. Good conditions for the next couple days. Should be good tomorrow a prior commitment will keep me inland for another day but if your still around after tomorrow I will be ready to go on the attack.

Sorry to hear about the rod Frank. I can fix the tip for you but I doubt you will have any problems with Shimano giving a replacement. Arora Black would have been my first choice as well. I have a lot of confidence in that color.

All that red frothy water that moved in over the past week down south has pushed the sea bass out to some cleaner waters keeping them out of the range of our weapons for now. With the red tides backing off they'll be back. Robert has some sort of special connection with those fish if anything he will find them and call in for back up. The way those fish like to school up I have no doubt that one of these days we will find a school that really wants to bite and we'll score some good numbers. Hope to join you guys soon.

Update on the rod.

Went to Shimano and they ended up replacing my old school convergence with the brand new design, no questions asked. Simply, looked at it and said "ok, were going to send you the new model rod in the mail, you should get it in 2 -3 days" cant say no to that. Signed some papers and on my way I went... wasnt there 10 mins. Good stuff.

Now to keep this one away from those hyper kids! I bought a taser. :Big Grin: :Secret:

Another thing I have noticed is during the summer months when kids (adults do this as well) come to check out what you caught after releasing it there never fails to be someone who charges in to the water right where you were fishing. My buddy would just tell everyone who came up that we had just been catching lots of stingrays and jelly fish all morning in attempt to keep people out of the water around us and I gotta say the story worked..LOL

People ask 'What are you fishing for ?'

It sucked. I couldnt feel the lure swimming back and forth and the taps werent as detailed as before.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y67/artistik_pr00f/DSCF0545.jpg

I'm taking it back to shimano tomorrow morning in hope that they will replace it...

what sucks even more is that I couldnt even single out any of those kids, there were a good amount of them. I just kept my mouth shut and let it be...lesson learned. Kids get close = hit em with some ninja kicks.

Till next time guys.
Frank, I learned my lesson a long time ago about having a back up rod. A back up reel is a no brainer, but not everybody carries a back up rod. A while back, I drove an hour and a half to an A.O. then hiked my way in... When I got down to the beach, I slipped and fell on some rocks. Snapped my rod about 3 feet down, which made it useless. I didn't even make a single cast. I just sat there on the beach staring out at the ocean, pissed off for like half an hour. Then hiked my way back out and drove all the way home disappointed. From that day on, I always have an extra rod in the car. I'm glad that Shimano upgraded your rod, that was way cool! :Big Grin:

Hi Wingnut,

Excellent, just outstanding details ....... great replies too !! Sometimes the replies are almost equal to the original when everyone is on their game !!

JapanRon
Thanks Ron, your reports are excellent too... talk about details. :Envious:
I try to reply to everybody's comments, to me, if someone takes the time to comment on my thread, I will acknowledge them with a reply... just common courtesy.

Great job out there guys!

I was patiently waiting all morning for a report but I knew deep down that no matter what the conditions you all would have a great day.

Congrats on all the nice fish and I'm looking forward to hitting the surf again in a couple of weeks.
Concentrate on The King of the Cats Tournament Terry. Win one for Dana! We'll be routing for Team TrollToon my friend. :Big Grin:

Good to meet and share the sand with you too, Frank...and with those Swat legends, Arthur and Robert... Buddy, you sure took the broken tip in good stride..but continuing to outcast me even with the busted rod was just going too far! NPI.
Great job on the legal Hali Sid, very well done. Frank & I bombarded that spot and you walk up, make a few casts and nail a legal. :Envious: Hope to fish with you again soon my friend. :Big Grin:

I'm sure you're right about the red tide pushing some of the species out farther Jerry. The Flat Fish seems to hunker down on the bottom and still relatively close to the beach at least.
I've never thrown the Aurora Black pattern. I know its been around since the beginning, but I started out throwing the ol' reliable Metallic Sardine, way back in the days...

Awesome Frank, can't beat a free upgrade! :Big Grin:
A taser would be good for some of those surfers too... lol

JerryG
Good story Jerry, I have to start using that one, LOL

LMAO JG

Had almost the the same thing happen a couple years ago.
Fishing squid, macs, bait and wait.
People ask 'What are you fishing for ?'
'SHARKS' I'd say. ' OMG there is SHARKS around here?' they say.'Yep, lots of SHARKS around'.
They think about Jaws, I'm thinking 2' - 3' Leopards, Smooth Hounds with sandpaper teeth. DR:LOL:

Bonus Report #5.
S.W.A.T. Red Tide Encore Session. Tuesday 10/4/11

I've been surf fishing for about 4 years now, wish that I could have started much earlier in life. Oh well, better late than never... Thank you Dana (Fisherman 57) for introducing this wonderful dimension of the fishing realm to me. I'm sure that the "Heaven" Chapter of S.W.A.T. is in good hands with you in-charge my friend.

I thought I've seen it all when it comes to surf fishing. But today, I experienced something I've never seen before. Most of you guys probably has already seen it and may think it's no big deal, but to me, it was quite amazing and I got such a kick out of it.

Let me explain... I was driving with JerryG this morning, on our way to meet up with Robert at our Southern A.O. We exited the freeway around 5:45am and headed towards the coast line. While driving along the coast we turn our heads and saw some brilliant flourescent blue flashes in the surf. The surf line was lit up with an awesome light show by mother nature. The red tide was displaying a natural phenomenon known as the bioluminescent effect. We pulled up to the A.O., I jumped out of the car and stood there mezmerized by the spectacular light show. Vibrant neon blue glow ignited with each incoming break. Robert soon pulled up and the three of us just stood there, in silence, staring out at the ocean, in awed. After a long period of time, someone said... "The grey light is coming, let's fish!" We started gearing up and hit the surf. I felt blessed to have witnessed such an wonderful sight. :Big Grin:

Conditions: Red Tide in effect, outgoing tide, water temp. 65 degrees, heavy overcast skies, drizzle and light intermitten rain throughout the morning. 1-2 ft swells in moderate intervals. Water quality fair to good, minimal salad, moderate baitfish presence. Surprisingly, the red tide didn't seem to have an affect on the decent bite. But who knows, maybe the bite could have been even better if there was no red tide...?

Session duration: 6:15am - 11:00am

Jerry, I'm glad that you were able to earn a day pass to come out to fish with us my friend. Had a great time talking to you on the drive to and from... the long drive is much easier to bear with good company. I will let you elaborate on some of the enemy personnel that eluded you today... but DUDE!!!:mad:
Let's do it again soon and it was cool meeting your two black Pugs. :Big Grin:

Robert, U Da Man brotha, you had the hot stick all morning. Multiple legals again! :EyePop: So funny, I was saying that at this rate, you will catch my legal Halibut count within a week... and Jerry says, "Not so fast, it's not even eleven o'clock yet... he still has time." Classic! :Big Smile:
Man, our LC's were running side by side in that trough and I get the 21" and you get the 23". :Envious: Thanks for the Hali for the "Iron Chef" :Big Grin:

Let me tell something bro. You did something today that I bet you didn't think that I noticed. You were having a great morning with the fish count and we were at the tail end of our session. You and I were coming up on a prime area as we were working our way back towards the cars. You said that your back was bothering you and walked out of the surf and went to sit down on the beach as Jerry and I fished on... Now, we both know that there's "nothing" wrong with your back. You relinquished the spot so we can have a chance to catch quality fish of our own. Unselfish, modest, humble... you are a class act my friend... and that's why you are my S.W.A.T. Brother.

I've been slacking off big time with work... Time to get out of town and take care of business. See you all in a couple of weeks.

Arthur,
It is always a pleasure to fish with you...
I envy the verve you have, for the small things in life that most of us do not realize are right in front of our eyes.:Surprised:
It was also my first time seeing the red tide glowing, or at least was brought to my attention, it was very cool seeing the surf get lit up. I wish I could have seen a fish swin through and slice the light, like a reverse meteor.
Again, you are always welcomed to any bounty that I am fortunate enough to get from the ocean. My Prayers have been plentiful lately...
How do you know how my back feels!?! I guess I won't be getting a Oscar any time soon.
I always want my friends, and family, to have better than me.
Thank You for the invite!:Big Grin:

It was good seeing you again. I kinda forgot what you looked like...

Robert/ Arthur,

Thanks for the good times my friends. Really enjoyed sharing the water with you guys. Looking forward to getting back out there when Arthur gets back but if the tides and swell are looking good next week you might be hearing from me Robert. Arthur thanks again for everything. My pugs were crazy about you especially Shyla (my female pug). She doesn’t drop a load like that for just anyone…LOL.

Robert thanks for being a great host, you really have that area dialed in my friend. It is crazy that I live on the same street you lived on when you were a kid. I feel blessed to have found surf fishing at a young age but it took me a long time to get things figured out. You are way ahead of the game my friend.

Kind of off topic but I remember one time I had this bad dream that I had never fished before but I had just found out about fishing and loved it. I was hooked but I was really old and I had no more time left. I remember dreaming WHY!!! WHY!! Couldn’t I have found about this as a child. I could have enjoyed it for a life time. Well thankfully that it was all a dream but if it were reality better late than never.

Anyways on to the fishing. Yesterday you had to work for bites but the fish were certainly there including a few HEAVY HITTERS believed to be members of the group responsible for several recent gray light attacks which have resulted in defeat and loss of weapons for a few SWAT members. With that being said a rookie mistake and a failure to take my own advice cost me some fish today. My first 3 fish spit the hook. Check your hooks to make sure they are sharp right?... Nope just kept fishing and finally got a couple shorties to stick.. Then I got that BIG strike. This was what we were looking for and just as the fish begins to take drag it my goes slack as felt my lure pull loose.. NOOO!

5 minutes later I get hit hard again but this time the fish stuck. It started swimming straight out peeling line fast. I was confident my line would hold. I held my rod high to keep pressure on the fish and then it hit me that I still had the stock Owner hooks on the lure. I knew the hooks would not stand up to the pressure being applied. so I dropped my rod tip a little to try to back off the pressure on the fish and while doing so “I said I still have the stock hooks on” then my line went slack once again I felt the kick of my lure pulling back but nothing else….NOOOOOOO!

Arthur looked at my hooks to find in addition to being dull the middle hook had been bent like a paper clip. This is not the first or even the second time that I have lost a nice fish because the stock hooks bent out but it will be the last. I knew better than to trust the stock hooks. I wanted to stick with the same lure because it was getting bit so I changed my hooks on the spot over to extra wide gaps which I should have done to begin with. I caught a couple of shorts and a butter fly ray after the hook change but that was it. Arthur took a picture of my damaged hook. Time to order more new hooks..

I’ll back looking for even more redemption then before.

Arturito, I finally bought the Prince concert tickets you keep bugging me about, along with the "moonlight haze" eye shadow you told me to get you...whats this for?  BAHAHA.

good job out there bro, those legals dont like us very much :Crying: they tend to avoid us at that spot lol.

Jerrito, good to see you hitting the surf bro! we miss ya! :Envious:
Hey, can I trade in the Prince tickets for Justin Bieber's tickets?
Good luck tomorrow fishing with Robert bro... I'll try to get back in town next week.

Nice catches I wish I could of made it out there with you guys today looked like an awesome day for a red tide day.
Been awhile since we hit the sand together Jonathan. But you've been holding your own and tearing it up everywhere lately. :Envious: Keep it up bro!

Arthur,
It is always a pleasure to fish with you...

Jerry,
It was good seeing you again. I kinda forgot what you looked like...
I enjoyed our talks in the surf and am envious of all your years fishing the surf.
I know you wanted some legals, as we all do, but you still had a productive day, none the less.
The one that got away................................I'll let you tell it...:Secret:
Take Care Bro, I look forward to the next time.

To "All" My Fishing Friends, Have A Good One!!!

Robert
<><
No Roberto, you have no future in the acting business...
Great job on the multiple legal Flatties day. I expect you to catch me by then end of this weekend. :Envious:
Good luck hitting the surf tomorrow bro and don't forget to bring that "G. repellant" we talked about. LOL

Great job guys, way to slay once again

Nick
Thanks Nick, leave those LB pancakes alone and hit the sand with us for some legals! :Envious:
Hope all is well buddy.

Arthur,

I've always marveled at your SWAT reports and this one is no different. What a great day you guys had. Seeing the glow of the red tide and then hitting the beach with Good Friends and onece again bringing some very nice catches to the beach.

Great job guys!:Thumbs Up:

The KoC is in two weeks and then I'll be back to the surf in search of a PB flattie of my own.
The King of the Cats honors will return to Team TrollToon this year! :Big Grin:
Good luck with the tournament Terry and we'll hit the sand for your "next" mission soon.

JerryG
That's too funny... I think Shyla smelled my Pugs on me and got overly excited.
I was going to post the picture of your hook all bent-up but there was a big water spot on it and it was all blurry. But we all know that it takes a big fish to bent out the saltwater trebles on the LC. The big fish was picking on you all morning... those were some drag burners.
Redemption time bro... I'll call ya when I get back in town next weekend.

WOW,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Swat rules the beaches!!!

TRAIL BLAZER
Thanks TB, when they start stocking Halibut in the Duct, I'll be there fishing at your side.

Good eye Phuong. I heard some rumors but can't elaborate. Maybe the Commander can confirm or dispel the rumors. :Secret:

Another great session by SWAT, did any of you guys fish this past weekend? Didn't see any SWAT reports. Went to Castaic and got skunked. Should have fished with Uncle Bob. Hey Art, the next time you head to Lake San Antonio with T/O, I'm down for the drive bro.
I can neither confirm or dispel any rumors... I plead the Fifth. :Secret:
This is FNN not TMZ, lol :Big Smile:

Looking forward to being at this great event once again to meet some new friends! This is what "57" envisioned and would be proud of us to carry on with what was started 2 short years ago!

For those that were unfortunate to be able to attend in the past , you missed out and here is a great opportunity to join in a very fun day out there sharing experiences and meeting new friends and to gain some knowledge from some talented folks.

Some great surf knowledge will be shared by some, discussions will be had and shared while standing side by side in the surf by some that have great freshwater talents catching trout, the cats, the bass, and you name it, all while trying to expand their horizons .

Here is some documented fun from last years event! Enjoy and sign up soon as the 50 slots will go very quickly!
