So my girlfriend and I decided to hit the surf one last time today before my vacation from work ended. We decided to check out Point Dume because it looked pretty enticing. It's only my third time out in the surf, but definitely the best time so far...and the day ended in an epic battle with something HUGE!!!
Arrived at the beach around 3:30 pm....the weather was gorgeous and the water was calm and surprisingly very clear! I could actually see my feet when i was almost waist high in some places...and there was ZERO salad. I've never fished for halibuts before, so i ordered a nice LC flash minnow to start my day with. Unfortunately on about my third cast i got it stuck on a rock that was farther out than i was willing to swim...so there went $17 right there :Embarrassed: Put mackerel colored Kroc on and continued at it, with no success. Maybe i was doing it wrong, but after about an hour of no bites i made the executive decision to salvage the day and catch some BSP's.....man was that a good idea!!!! We caught more BSP's than we could even count! (lost track after about 20)....virtually almost every cast till sundown. I also caught a short flattie halibut on the crack, you'll LOL at the pic. on my very last cast of the evening I changed it up and landed a decent YFC...good times!
we went back up to the truck to call it a day, but i had almost forgot that i brought my big catfish pole and some fresh cut bait to try for a leo....since i have this dream of landing a 6 footer, it's a goal of mine, lol i've never fished for sharks before...but i figured my big ugly stick with ambassador bcx would be enough to handle what i might encounter in the surf....man was i wrong! the moon was bright and i chucked out some fresh cut bait into the surf...not more than 10 minutes later my reel starts screeeeeeeamin'! i let him run about 20 seconds....set the hook....and theres a freight train on the end of my line and it aint stoppin! for some reason the drag on my reel decided to take a dump on me and stop working at that very moment and snap! my 14 lb test instantly breaks. now im pissed, but excited! i quickly rig up again, fiddle with my drag some, and huck another meaty chunk out there. not more than a few minutes goes by and another freight train hits...let em run, set the hook...and ill be damned if i didnt hook into a submarine! i have never in my life felt a fish that is so heavy and so strong....just kept pulling! after a 45 minutes battle and being drug about a 1/2 mile down the beach i finally get the thing close enough to maybe catch a glimpse of what it could be....i guess i got too impatient because just as the flashlight was ready to light him up....SNAP! gone forever without me even seeing him, all my hard work and sore arm....wasted! lol i'm assuming it was a huge batray? ive never fought a shark or a ray, but i imagine a shark battle to be a little more interesting? (head shakes and whatnot?) this thing felt like a cement bag with fins, super heavy and very long, strong pulls.....i need to get heavier tackle and seek revenge
here's a few pics of the outing...i feel every thread needs pics...lol
