First off hats off to the Captian and Crew on the Indian out of H&M landing he and crew were top notch and were on top of every fish hooked, took care of tangles accordingly, and stuck most my fish with head gaff shots. They run a top notch operation and I highly recommend this boat if any of you guys who are looking for excellent boat and crew out of SD.

We left the dock Sunday fishing Labor Day to horrible weather, huge swells, howling wind the weather was so bad this day that when the rollers came through everyone has to hang onto the rail so you do not fall backwards. Got to the spot about an hour before sunrise once grey light hit we were bendo I was the 3rd guy to land a fish. The bite never went wide open but we picked at the fish pretty much all day long. We could of limited early but with the rough conditions, light line, howling wind, drifting 2-3 knots it made it tough for a lot of guys on the boat to keep their fish on the hook. For me I kept my drags right made sure I put the wood to every fish hooked and kept my casualtes low I ended up with triple limits plus 2 unfortunately when the fish are biting I do not take many pictures so here is some fish porn of the few pics I took.

I know you guys have heard this before but 10% of the guys catch 90% of the fish and it is true. We had 4 hot sticks on the boat that combined caught close to 50 fish the rest of the 20 caught 70 for a 120 limit. A tip to new guys fishing offshore or even a refresher for the seasoned guys. Bait selection and handling your bait I think is one of the key factors to success when fishing on the party boats. Most of you guy pay attention to detail you make sure you put on fresh line, spend mucho dinero on shiny rods and reels, use check your drags, use fluorocarbon leader but… you forget about the basics pick a perfect bait..! Take your time and pick that perfect bait and you will get bit instantly while all the guys are soaking their bait for 3,4,5 minutes and hanging out and bunched up on the bow. Pick the bait that has no scales missing, no red spots, their nose are not beat up. But it does not stop at picking a bait there is more to it when you grab your bait don’t use the kung fu grip on the bait it is useless picking a great bait when you choke the heck out of them and knock off their scales by your grip. Carefully cradle your bait pin a hook on your desired spot without knocking off the scales, cast your bait out instantly, and try to underhand cast your bait. Countless times I have seen guys pick the right bait, cradle their bait, and they whip their bait out 100mph and smack on the water then you see stunned bait with scales glittering all around it.

Hope this helps some of you guys that are going out this summer.

Good Luck Out There Guys

Thanks for the report, way to SLAY.

I'm heading out on the Indian on Monday. What were you fishing, 20lb. flouro with #1 hook?

I forget where I read this, but someone said tuna like injured bait, similar to how most pelagics would pick out the lagging bait from a school. Some deckhands would even throw their bait against the deck before pinning em on. Thanks for your tip either way. I guess I'll try both ways and see what works in a given situation.

Yup 20lb flouro but bring 15 just in case they get line shy #1 circle this way you do not get bitten off. Good Luck out there.

Well.. it might work.. Just figure there are 23 others on the boat a good percentage of those guys are not fishing with lively baits and are not getttin touched me and the other 3 hott sticks on the boat caught 1/3 of the fish and we were all using strong baits. Most of my hits came within 30 seconds of hitting the water.

vanilla, the boats want numbers, it a number game, so you can catch as many as you can til the boat limits out, otherwise they wont make the numbers. Chris is a cool guy but on our trip, we drove over fish to go fish. fish were 50 miles out and he took us 150 out to no mans land to catch 3 fish for day 1, day 2 we hauled back to zone 1(50mile) but we were an hour late for the bite, 16 anglers private charter we got 6 fish, bad call on his end, so we had no galley tab, free beer lol. since no one caught any on day 2 we got our jackpot money back

Great report, THNX. Bait selection does matter, but not always.
4 years ago I was chunking dead dines and tossing chunks on offshore paddies since we were low on bait.
After being picky on bait choice all day for a couple YTs and Dorados you could see them going after the chunks.

We ended up with a few more late in the day.
The YT and DoDos all had fresh chunks in there stomach.
Chunking is cutting a 6" sardine into 4 pieces.
Dead sardines don't always sink, when you chunk them they sink and leave a blood trail that sparks
the fish and leaves the impression of a after feeding frenzy.
Cattle boats carry enough bait to chum live but small PBers have to chum what you can.

Thanks, I am not going to lie I was feeling half way sea sick for part of the trip.

Thanks for clarifying boat limits for the other guys years back I did not know about boat limits I had my five limit and was sitting around the captian told me to get my butt out there and keep fishing. That is unfortunate that you guys ran that far just to turn around and head to the Hidden Bank it seemed to happen to a bunch of other 1 1/2-2 day trips at that time since the bulk of the fish moved closer. That is awesome that Captain Chris was kind enough to realize he made a mistake and cover gally tabs and return JP.

Ha Ha I thought of it after the slay fest that would be pretty cool S.W.A.T sushi. As far as the size they were pretty much all schoolie 15-20lb fish Jp was probably less than 25lbs but either way they are delicious and I had a blast catching them.

Nice, nice and nice! Thanks for the tips. How does a bluefin taste compare to albacore or yellowfin?

I am not sure about albacore since it has been so long since I have caught one. I am not a fish eating specialist by any means but I think BFT are more tender and melts in your mouth when eating shashimi. When cooked I personally think they taste the same.

I am glad you pointed that out I hear they do this often on long range boats I have never fished the chunk before but have heard at times chunk fishing is better than live bait and when they go off on the chunks that is all they want and will not touch the live kind.

Just a thought, can tuna be caught and released?
