I'll add my part of this report, and let my "chauffeur" for the day add hers ;)

Got up early, and got a ride from a member who needed some help on fishing the surf. After spending a little while in a roundabout trying to find a parking spot, we were on the sand around 8 am, or something like that, cant remember exactly when. Wasn't expecting a corbina this time, after the last few trips X(

It took me a while to find some decent crabs, due to the previous high tide, which pushed alot of the crabs far up the beach, had to wait until the tide rose enough to free the stranded crabs to get consistent scoops. The waves were pretty tough early, despite the hectic surf, I only spotted weak, brief rips. So to compensate, a grabbed a few mussels.

Battling the swell and large waves was difficult in the morning. Decided to use mussels, and finally hooked up to a TINY surfperch! Smallest surfperch I ever caught. Funny, because it bit a HUGE mussel!

lol, look at that. That little tyke was HUNGRY.

I was having difficulty catching fish, Because I was using such a light weight in a strong AM surf, I had to keep my line slack at all times, or else it wouldnt stay in the strike zone.

I then farmed a decent surfperch 4 feet before me. (first time ever farming a surfperch for me!)

As the tide rolled back in, I was able to find much nicer sandcrabs, several "papershells" mixed in.

With better bait, I decided to see if any croakers/sharks wanted to tangle, so I wandered waist-deep and chucked some thumb-sized crabs...

...Which attracted the attention of a male 22-inch Shovelnose Guitarfish

Reloaded, and went back to the exact same spot, and..

..His smaller sister said hi.

We went to the harbor, but didnt catch anything. Tide went slack, and I missed every hit I got. Both on sandcrabs and Big hammers... Tons of boat traffic, gondolas, paddleboarders, buttholes ignoring the 5 MPH rule. Etc.

Still had a great day, though!

atleast you dodged the skunk, i caught a short but, a 17" WSB and got broke off by what my homie said was a bigggg spotty at my spot. curado e7 with ceramic bearings casts a 1/4oz 3" hammer a mile and a 4" a mile and a half lmao! Just got done supertuning it and might hit LBC tomarow possibly. Bolsa has been slow, the water yesterday was dirty with lots of wind, hard to fish with 15mph winds.

Smokehound, you need to start your own guide service! Yesterday I learned a plethora of information I would have never gotten out of a book. You are so incredibly smart and patient. I asked some pretty silly/dumb questions and got straight answers, without judgment and that made me feel extremely comfortable. That one kid in the gray pants said, “He’s the smartest guy I know.” I agreed! Thank you for a great day. I appreciate your time.

With Smokehound’s guidance and teachings, I caught more fish from the shore yesterday than I have all summer- and I have been up and down the coast for the last two months!

We were in for a beautiful day

The largest one Surf Perch was caught by another fisherman.

So, what did I learn? How to pick and shuck muscles, how to dig for crabs and get really big ones (didn’t sound right?) I meant sand crabs, what to look for in the sand to find crabs, and how to hook them, the importance of different types of hooks, how to de-shell sand crabs, how to hold my pole straight up and not down at the water and the importance of it, how to use Big Hammers (put the plastic on the head/hook thing), how to read the waves, look for structure that isn’t visible to the naked eye, how to take the hook out of the fishes mouth- not using pliers, how to put the plastic grubs on the hook… so much more! Sometimes you need someone showing you. Even though you have some experience, there is still so much to learn! I think that goes with everything in life.

Smokehound, thanks again. I will be passing your knowledge on. :) I had a great day!

Props to you smokehound and congrats Karyn. Looks like a nice day was had. And it's ALWAYS better to be shown than told (or read).

I'm very impressed that you were able to hook that one little bsp! What size hook was that? At one of my local beaches, there are tons of small ones like this, but hooking them is tough!

I'm very impressed that you were able to hook that one little bsp! What size hook was that? At one of my local beaches, there are tons of small ones like this, but hooking them is tough!I was using a #2 gamakatsu baitholder hook. Using a smaller hook will actually make it harder to catch surfperch, because they have a big mouth. even the smaller perch have a big enough mouth to engulf a size 1 octopus circle hook.

Surfperch will suck the bait in, slurp the roe and meat out, and blow the empty sandcrab shell back out, they do this really fast, so you have to make sure you set the hook right when it's inside.

That's why after a surfperch hits your crab, it's often missing the legs and underside.
