well my b-day is coming up and i have a chance to get a new rod and reel.. im loooking for a trout set up since what i have are only the 20 dollar BPS combos they have. dont get me wrong i have caught plenty fish with those but i think its time to step up my game and try the whole jiggin game. My budget is going to be no more then 150 and that has to include line in there also . so what do u guys think would be a good set up ??

150 total go with a TFO 7' light rod (they are a g Loomis design) and go with a shimano Sedona 1000 reel. You can get all that at BPS. Buy some Izorline 2# and ur ready to slay. PM me if u have any questions.

Hit up Turners for 40% off any Abu Garcia Cardinal. In your price range, I'd recommend the 501 or 601 for $70 or $80 (retail), respectively. 40% off that retail price and you have about $100 left over to spend on a rod.

you can try daiwa spinmatic or daiwa heartland series. As for reels like trout daddy mentioned shimano sedona or the sienna, also daiwa crossfire reel

Or you could take $130 - $140 and find a used Phenix trout rod to use with a reel you already own while you save up for a new reel.

You might wanna look at the new Blackrock rod or a Used Phenix rod. You can buy a Abu Garcia Cardinal 100u 101u 300u or 301u or a Shimano Sedona 500 750 or 1000 the BIGGEST. You'll be set.

I would vote for you saving that $150, rolling that over with x-mas money coming up and get an awesome setup. :) i would go with either the 7'6 g loomis trout rod ($250) and a stradic ci-4 ($189) .... Or a phenix elixr / stradic ci-4 combo. Watch out for sales coming up like last years sale at fishermans hardware in brea. They sold elixr's for $100 last year during christmas. Or just keep an eye out on craigslist. If you plan on jigging, these two combos are what i would go with. A bit expensive, but worth the money if you like fishing trout like me.

at 150 im really pushing my limit if i buy a rod that is 250 by itself my wife would kill me lol.. no but honestly i dont fish that much to justify me spending that kind of money at 150 i think is the fair amount that i can spend on a decent piece of fishing equipment..

diawa spinmatic and a shimano sahara, best combo for under $100, then spend the $50 on some good line and jigs/worms.

Daiwa Spinmatics are awesome rods, especially for the money. Buy the highest-priced Shimano reel you have enough left over for, something in a 750 or 1000 size, but be sure to save enough for good line. I like clear Ande in 2 lb, about $12 for 1/4 pound spool, better part of a mile of line.
Good luck!

Get yourself the Fenwick Elite Tech River Runner series. It puts my Phenix to shame.... Only problem they retail for $130. http://www.fenwickfishing.com/prod.php?k=375593&sk=375593&p=PURERR58UL-F%20(1205787)

I dont know about putting Phenix to shame.

I think Phenix makes some of the best rods on the market for trout but everyone has their own opinion.

I have three broken ones to back up my opinion.

phenix arent the best and are heavy rods but they are built well and make every buyer think the have a custom rod. the best of the best would be a custom wraped sage fly blank with titanium alconite guides and a full cork handle with graphite tennesee reel seat or tape/ shrink wrap the reel on.

wth are you doing to them?

wth are you doing to them?

First one broke at Crowley, didn't realize it until the fish was almost to shore and then I saw the last 6" of the rod sticking out of the fish's mouth. Second two broke on different trips at Irvine Lake passing them into boats. No reason any should have broken, and not about to pay anything for a replacement. I know some very reputable saltwater guys who love the saltwater Phenix stix so if it's the same company, they have one good line. The ones that broke on me were early models, couple of years ago, so maybe there was a defect that has been corrected? I hope so but will never know becuase I won't buy another.

I have this reel, and I can throw anything across a lake with it. The combo of the small jig and 2# line is perfetct for making long casts.

hey well thanx every1 for the advice i think im set on the rod and reel and line im going to get a sedona reel and i belive a TFO rod that combo seems to be in my price range most of the other reels i would love to get but if the rod is more then 120 or 130 that means i dont have room to buy my reel and i want both so i think i made up my mind
