You knew something was up when you noticed the marine life getting jiggy didn't ya ?:Envious:

Good job and a thats a nice fish.:Thumbs Up:

Just one more thing. I know that might be the only net you have and that's great. But please if you are sure that the fish (Halibut) won't measure out to 22" or bigger or you plan to release it, don't use it. That type of net can cause damage to the Tail of Halibut. They can get a decease that will rot the tail and cause death to the fish. A fine mess net is the preferred one to use on Halibut.

Good luck

Great job on the Halibut.

Just one more thing. I know that might be the only net you have and that's great. But please if you are sure that the fish (Halibut) won't measure out to 22" or bigger or you plan to release it, don't use it. That type of net can cause damage to the Tail of Halibut. I agree with the net, not the best for Halibut, But
he might not have landed it without it.
Most guys don't carry a net and drag them up on the rocks and the
barnicles then pin them down to get control.
Then they unhook them for the release, probably doing more damage than that net in the pic. (See Video)

The halibuts go crazy when they hit the surface and I've seen guys drop them in the rocks too, just to feed the crabs. Had this discussion with some bounce ball guys and they recommend netting or sinking the gaff before they hit the surface.

Short Halibut/WSB/BSB get killed all the time do to guys mishandling them.

Common Mistakes; :Rolls Eyes:

1) Finger in the gills, use a rag (removes the protective slime)
2) Pinning them down on dry sharp rocks
3) Waiting to get the camera for multi pics
4) Laying down a tape measure to get more pics to get the measurement pics
5) Dropping them or having them come unbuttoned to get damaged or land in the rocks
6) Dragging them onto dry sand to get sugar coated (removes the protective slime)

Just estimate,
Does it really matter if it is 14" or 16" 'nobody cares' if your guess is off 1", 2" or 3"

#1 Concern is to Release It SAFELY !!!

Then it will have more of a chance to survive to grow up and turn into someones dinner and or reproduce into 100's or 1000's of Baby Halibuts.

State of California has a LAW that ALL BOATERS must carry a net for proper catch and release of short species.

Mishandeleing short or illegal species is my eyes is a crime simular to Poaching.
The Idiot at Newport Pier with the BSB is a example. I jacked up the jaw at Pier 400 of a 18" White Sea Bass a few years ago, swam off and probably died. Live and Learn

You can go to any fishing website and see these mistakes :Secret:

Practice Proper Catch and Release :Thumbs Up:
