hey there,
Havent posted anything in a long time but here goes my first surf fishing report of the year.
My brother and i decided to go down to Long beach for some halibuts. ive been lucky there before but nothing legal yet. yesterday prove to be the same. tried the LC's and spoons and the spoons out fished the LC's this time.
water was very clear and warm. Tons of bait in the water, we saw small halibuts jumping out of the water chasing bait, that was cool. we probably caught about 20 pancakes and some skates. still a great day regadless of the size of fish. tons of action and very fun. hopefully next report will yield something a little bit more exciting.
i felt the conditions where right, very little to no vegetation and water clarity was awesome!
until next time, have fun out there, its beautiful!

alex.

20 Pancakes that is really something! What you'd bring the little guys in on spinning or baitcasting?

Oh, and hasn't the salt action been stellar this year? Man I wish I could take another trip down to LB!

i caught them on a baitcaster and 14lb floro...overkill to say the least but fun! just have to be very careful, dont want to bust their jaws. 2nd time i hit the salt water this year, been way to busy. but now thats done and im ready to focus on the salt the rest of the year.

You must be in the right spot! The last six times I went out for surf fishing I managed to catch everything else but fish: sea weed, a sea slug, the rocks, a bottle, some a bag, my hair... oh! and a crab. I don't know how much more exciting catching 20 fish would be? For me, catching one would be a really great day!

Waiting for the big gal I see. 14lb fluoro is something; why not down size to 10lb? That would make things interesting!

i dont think they are line shy...the little ones bit on 14lb, im hoping that the big ones hit it as well....we'll see what happens.

That a decent session, good numbers.
Noticed the same thing fishing in the LB area. The LC's aren't nearly as effective as the Krocs and other type of spoons.
The secret that Hai and his monster Halibut Crew figured out a long time ago... :Secret:

its good to know that spoons and krcos work well there.
it makes figuring out an area easier. simple process of elimination.
thanks Arthur.

where's 72nd jetty?

LB at the end of the Peninsula, across the channel from Seal Beach/San Garial River.
All jetties or breakwalls hold Halibut. Don't thick 72nd is more loaded or will get you a big one.

Live smelt is the best bait and easy to catch, they last for 6 hours easy if you change 1/2 the water every 45 min or so, No Bubbler needed, just a 5 gal bucket.

DR Good suggestion, but where and how do you make bait?

Hey Wingnut,
Are there any favorite colors and or sizes when it comes to the Kroks? I hear that a few of the troops are throwing KastMasters also. Same question for the KM.
Your guidance is always welcomed!

20 butts is very impressive!
The big ones were out there but seems they didn't want to play.
Thanks for the report,
Robert
