This is a late report, but I thought I'd post it anyways for you photo hoes. Anywho, went to Balboa pier with my cousin and uncle for yet another day of fishing. :D Basically between my uncle and myself there were well over 100+ Macs that we bounced over the rail during the 2.5hrs we were there.

Baits/Lures used: Mac chunks, Squid, Shrimp, Kastmasters, bare hook:happy:

All fish were caught on 4lb mono with noodle stick trout rods. Man oh man was it fun.

Newport is really clean compared to LB!

A corb

A Filipino lady was shocked that we were chucking the Macs back and asked if we could give her some. I think we did a decent job.

Wow, the corbina @ the end is just silly! Your out there fishin for Macs and you land a Corbina..many guys try for quite a long time to trick one of them into running off with there line, only to leave smelling lke a nasty lil skunk.

Good luck out there buddy, and way to go on hookin up the lady with some fish for the road.

Sincerely,
Tommy

Thanks Tommy. Oh I never did say that we landed a corb. My uncle just loves taking photos so he asked a guy that had one if my cousin could post with it. Sorry if I got you going there.

Nice! I was just there this past Friday, I keep trying to convince my friend to go surf fishing with me, but for whatever reason, he's happy with the Macs he catches.. I've yet to try surf fishing really, tried digging for sand crabs and had several people ask me what I was doing, so I tried fishing the beginning of the pier where the corbina, perch and halis like to hang out to no avail, so I said the heck with it and joined my buddy on the mac run.. lol. that's one way to kill the skunk.

Yea no kidding the Mac's can be a ton of fun on lite rods. Just be ready for a bonita to come by and tune you up on that equipment, now thats even more fun.
There's times on my local pier that I will grab my wife's trout rod and just go after mac's and have fun too.

Good work with Kid. Keep it up

Lol great title.

That's a great pier to score a free meal, too. Lots of spoiled peninsula residents will buy tons of food, take a few bites, then leave. Nothing like some Ruby's chicken tenders and fries for FREE!

After the first hour of WFO I was ready to stop because of the ridiculous action, but my uncle convinced me to not do so. Maybe I shouldn't have listened to him because my shirt was covered in Mac meat and I had to throw away a towel that was drenched in slime and blood.

One of the first fish I caught was actually a bonie and it did give my set-up a good solid run. And it sure was fun!

You know you're right about all the left over food because a portion of the people left a lot of uneaten food.

kind of the reason why I hated catching macs at first, cause I didn't want to touch them.. lol. then I started seeing the hardcore sabikiers use BBQ tongs to avoid the same slimy and bloody mess that you speak of and got one myself, best idea ever'

I've been ignoring the mackerel lately. Fresh sardines are better IMO.

This post reminds me of way back when the barge used to still be out in Redondo Harbor. You could catch as many mackerel as you wanted.

I need to get my son out in a wide open mack attack bite just for fun! Thanks for the report and the idea!

Nice pier report from BB. What a nice surprise with the Bean in the mix!

Later in the fall you might try putting one of them mac's in a hoop net and get some of the crabs that will work into the area! That is if you can avoid the dreaded Sea Dog!
