Today we would be heading out with 30 anglers. Fishing during the week held a pick on some bass with most being calicos, so we hoped things would turn on a little better for us. It was overcast and the water was a little bumpy, but otherwise the weather was okay. We headed up the line and stopped at our first spot along a kelp line. Most guys started off flylining sardines with fair success, but the fish would mostly attack the bait and not get it all the way, so some switched over to the leadhead and squid, and some nice calicos were caught. As for me, I was fishing the rubber, and the calicos were very eager to bite it on the sink. I got bit almost every cast by a calico on the sink, and if I hit bottom, sometimes I got a nice brown rockfish. A couple others fished the plastic for good success on the calicos also. After a while this spot petered out so we moved on.
The next spot we fished didn’t have as many bass, but the cabezon were on the chew, but most were short. I think only two legals were caught. This wasn’t enough to stay, so we moved on, and Steven decided to make a run back down the beach to try some structure spots.
The structure bass fishing was pretty good. Mostly calicos came up but there were a few nice grumpies in between. A couple guys were on fire with the calicos with an ounce leadhead and a whole fresh dead squid. I didn’t get any calicos, but I got a couple nice sand bass. Seeing that the guys getting most of the calicos were fishing a lighter head, I’d suppose that’s the ticket for them as the calicos tend to suspend sometimes, while the big sand bass are tight into the structure, so a heavier head works better for them. But it’s just a theory.
We ended the day with about 90 mixed bass and about 50 assorted rockfish and a few others. Not wide open but fishing was good. I wasn’t out today (Sunday) but I heard the sheephead fishing was really good with some big fish up to 18 pounds. Great times, great fishing!
