This is kinda a over view report for my weekend, started out Sat AM at Carlsbad State Beach attending the Bill Varney seminar, seemed like a good enough excuse to fish other locals and the seminar was the best price ever, free.
I got down there about an hour before things got started, I had about an hour so I ventured down to the steps to the beach and started using one of my team mates Metalic Sardine. Well all I gotta say is I shoulda brought a fork and some dressing because the salad was THICK! Every retrieve was nothing but a wad of ell grass, so needless to say I had to switch tactics. Went with a Carolina and some 2" grubs and did manage to get a couple Perch with the 20 mins I had left...(only took one pic):

The seminar was great, good info, great guy with a wealth of knowledge. He went over simple surf fishing technics, showing how to rig four different types of live baits to a Carolina rig, took about an hour. Then everyone hit the beach and spread out along the shore. Bill had a chance to chat with everyone there as you fished, found out we live in the same 'hood. Saw alot of Perch being caught but for the remainding 3 hours I got nothing else. Had a good time and met some really nice folks.
Sun I decided to stay close and fish the home front, got there at greylight, positive tide about a foot, light breeze, surf breaking far from shore. Once again I start with one of my team mates Metalic Sardine. Worked that for a coulpe of hours, no joy.
Switched tactics again, went with Carolina with 2" grubs and got one Perch:

A few others showed up futher south from me and looked to be catchin fish and since the grubs stopped workin I went to Sandcrabs. There seemed to be plenty around and it seemed to be the trick:

Had a blast, first time using Sandcrabs. By eleven o'clock the shore pound was too much, everyone had gone also so I called it a day.
Thanks Bill, Cal State Parks, FNN, Pontoon for all your help, having a great time with this..........tight lines!
Edit: I almost forgot, saw some strange activity by a large flock of seagulls and Pelicans, mostly Pelicans:

They were dive bombing the water right on top of the surfers really close to shore. Was really interesting to watch.......

Good job out there NT!

Had to borrow my daughters computer since mine decided it didn't want to work as soon as I got home from the convention in Vegas.

I'm glad to hear you learned a few things at the seminar. I can't wait to hear more about it tomorrow and any catch is a good catch in the surf!

Great job and thanks for posting and sharing the pics!
