Probably a silly question, but being a novice I was wondering what is the best fishing line to use in the sierras, monofilament or flurocarbon? Also, what is the difference between the two>

Fluro is more abrasion resistant and less visible, and a bit more expensive. 2lb fluro is a staple for baitfishing for trout.
Mono is easier to cast, I use mono for trolling. A fluro leader can be used, some people use mono with a fluro leader for baitfishing. If you're trolling/casting, use 4, 5, or 6lb test. Use 2 or 3lb for bait.

Keep it simple...2# Izorline XXX is all you need unless trolling.

the issue with fluro is it does not break down and decompose.unlike mono over time the sun breaks it down.
the key is light good quality line,2lb or 4lb.
change baits to find what is working, each day maybe a little different.

tight lines

That's not a fluoro is it? You like it just as well or better than a fluoro?

What he said. It's caught big fish, and landed big fish.

i prefer flouro in the sierra due to the extremely clear water but most quality 2lb mono would be ok.

I'm a huge fan of FireLine...whether trolling or bait fishing. 6 lb Fire Line is as thin as 2 lb mono or fluro and it's breaking point is way past double it's test rating.

Thanks Peaks. Do you recommend the Crystal, smoke or green for the Fireline....or does it matter?

Bagger...since FireLine is so thin...it doesn't make as much of a difference as regular mono or fluro line. But still, I use the line that coincides with the water condition. Crystal clear water...use crystal. Greener, algae heavy waters I use the moss green (not a big fan of the flame green) Muddy, dirty water, I use the smoke. However, since I'm mainly just a trout fisherman these days in alpine lakes, I rarely have to use anything other than the crystal.

This is from the Berkley webpage Fireline 6# is the size of 2#

Like they both said... Izorline XXX in 2# is all you will need! I've caught tons of fish on it from the sierras to down here locally. The stuff works hands down.

Did some investigating on this and found out that it is the same size as some "berkley" 2 lb flouro's, however it is larger than 2lb mono. 0006 compared to .0005. Very stiff and strong with no stretch, probably not very good for casting but probably great for trolling.

If 6lb fireline is abt the same size as 2lb mono, then 4lb Fireline is abt the same size as 1lb mono?

You'd be surprised how well it casts. My only real gripe with FireLine...is it's a bytch to tie. Trying to get thin braided line through a tiny loop ? Fuhgettaboutit.

SierraPeaks,

Very interesting thread. I'm a big fan of fireline due to casting distance. However, I've always thought it is much move visible than mono when comparing equivalent lb test.

Quick question. Have you every tried fishing mono and fluoro side by side and see if bit rates differ? I have a bunch of 1 and 2 lb fireline and still think they are too visible compared to mono for clear water. Yes these are thinner than 2 lbs mono but more visible nonetheless.

Love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks,
UL
