With only a couple of hours to fish this morning I headed back to last weeks A.O. with plans to fish the L.C. for my whole time there.
Got an early start and was there a little before six. When I got to the beach there was already a couple guys working the surf with plastics and another guy with bait rods already fishing.
Started working the area without too much luck. With the tide being low it was tough getting a clean retrieve without picking up some salad. Figured I'd keep working my way down the beach until I came across some cleaner water.
As I work my way north I saw something struggling in the water. First thought was a short WSB but couldn't tell yet. Still too far out to get to. As it got pushed closer I quickly scooped him up. Nice healthy Spotfin stuck in a clear plastic bag! Not something you see everyday.

Here's a pic of the Spot and his bag

No More bag and ready to roll.

Put em back quick and he swam off strong.

Quickly went back to fishing as the tide was steadilly rising. It was looking fishy but I wasn't getting any hits. I kept seeing bait break the surface so I knew something was out there. Decided to switch to another bait pattern to see if I might closer match what was in the surfline. Tied on another L.C. and started working my way back.

About 20 yards from my return point I get hit! Not too hard but a solid stop! Waiting for headshakes but all I felt was weight....Am I stuck?...In the weeds?....Line starts moving along the beach. Not stuck! And THERE'S that big headshake!

Couple of tense moments as I tried to beach her. As my luck would have it there was lull in the surf and she refused to come in. After a couple nerve racking moments I was finally able to slide her up on the beach.:Big Grin:

My first Keeper from the surf!!

She taped out at 26 1/2" and was right at 7lbs. on the spring scale.
It was an easy decision to keep her because the second hook was right in her eye so it wouldn't be a clean release.
Decided to call it day and was back at the car, loaded, and headed for home right at 8:00am. Best couple of hours of fishing I've had in a long time! Finally got my keeper from the surf! Even if I got the evil eye for doing so!

The wife was quick to decide how she was gonna serve it up. Said she was craving a type of ceviche from back home. Made with small chunks of fish instead of diced up pieces. She breaded some up for dinner as well because my boys aren't fond of ceviche.

Here's the dinner pic.:Big Grin:

Jerr-dog,
Was a Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110. The color was Metallic Sardine. Factory color but with upgraded hooks and split rings. Should definitely give one a try.:Big Grin:

Wow! Congrats! Karma was definately on your side...on your LC do you put a swivel? I picked one up and don't know if I'm suppose to put one on? I've been hitting the beach and have caught some decent sized fish with plastics, but broke down and bought a crock and LC; almost all the photos shows them caught on them...

Karyn,
I don't use a swivel. I tie directly to the split ring. I swap my mainline split ring out for the "XPS Rick Clunn" oval shape rings. I think L.C. sells their rings seperately as well but I haven't had any luck finding them. These I'm able to get at Bass Pro Shops.

Nice reward for a for a good deed in helping out a nice spotfin!

The spotfin would have taken you for a ride compared the that flattie! Just a thought from a prior experience and something to set you future goals to go after!

Dinner looked great by the way!

My LC came with an oval split ring. I don't know if that's standard or if they changed things, but I thought the oval one was a good idea.

I went on line to the Rapala "How To TV" and it was pretty detailed- heck, they even have hot spot map- it took me to the middle of the Pacific- but it's there nonetheless. I liked the videos and it also helped me to visualize what I had to do to make the lure work. : )
