Hey all,
decided to go fishin in the mornin. Did my normal dropshot thang for a multiple bites but only a couple hookups. So I make the first cast, sure, no big deal. Water looks good, has that blue color, mild surf. kinda warm between my toes, feels sixty-something. not sure, oh well. keep fishin. I feel that tap on my bait, wind steady...SWING and shes hooked. short, but its a butt nonetheless.

ok so keep fishin, walk down the beach. not bad, few bites here and there but nothing to stick. theres a nice trough over there, beside a riptide, lets give it a go. I cast into the trough, wind wind, TAP, oohhhh i think its a bite! wind steady, SWING! mm its got some weight to it, not quite legal, but still not bad.

Well well, few more casts, i get this weird bite, not a hali, not a bass. Tap and run, hmmm, feels like a ray but lets see. it pulls drag, lots of it. takes me a little to get it in.
help me identify? not sure what kind of shark it is

anyway, I hooked 2 more of something that bit similar to this. second one, I never got to see. it ran out about 150 yards and fast, pulling drag all the way up until it unbuttoned. o well, wonder what it could have been.
third one, i hooked, it was another shark, saw the tail whip right before my line popped (i could have brought it in given some time, but after seeing it wasnt a halibut, i was over it, buttoned down the drag and thumbed the spool)
it was about twice the size as the first.

anway, fun fishin. probably the best fights on this gear ive had in a loooong time.

tight lines,
Nick

I believe that is a smoothhound shark you have there. Nice report with pics. Not to shabby a day at all. Short hali's are better than no hali's.

X2 on the smooth hound. Nice job on the flatties as well!

It's a Gray or Brown Smooth hound Shark. Grays get larger and their teeth are not pointed and sharp like Browns are. A fun fish to catch for sure.

Yep, definitely a smooth hound. They're a blast on light tackle

Good job on the fish. Those Smoothhounds sometimes 'School Up'. When that happens it can be 'Game On'.
Especially in LA/LB Harbor. Squid works good on them.

Nice little session you put down there Nick!
Good to see you working the DS my friend. I've been getting back to those roots myself lately. It's been tough with that recent water temp drop which kinda screwed up a good pattern we had going but the good old "Go back over the LC area with a DS setup" has been at least giving me some action like yours has. I got so used to power fishing an area that I lost track of my "Slow and Easy" roots developed back when I was only a FW bass guy. They are still around.....Ya just gotta slow it down!
As far as the smooth hound.......I opted to fish only for them last year when I took my daughter to ventura harbor and the flatty and perch were dead. I took her to the entrance to ventura keys and set her up with a carolina rigged piece of squid. It was WFO on small smooth hounds and leos but we had a serious blast with medium wt gear.
I suppose when you are a primary CPR fisherman.....It's all about the fight and bragging rights....LOL
Keep up the good work buddy!

Mike

Way to go Nick..
Yea I don't fish bait much at all, so I don't see many sharks either. But my first guest was a smoothound as well. I have only seen a few caught.
Now you just need to get a big Leo like Pontoon did 2 weeks ago on that light equipment.
