I was up the coast the other weekend and did some fishing. Each time I seem to do a little more exploring and it always seems to pay off. The weather was great. Each day started off overcast and a little foggy, but you could see a very long distance. Then just after noon the clouds would start to break up and we would get a few hours of blue ski. First day paddled out with ease and headed to the rocks. The sea lions were putting on a show jumping around me. There were a ton of orange Jellyfish all over the place as well. Dropped down and the first fish I pulled up was a nice cabezon, tossed him back and kept on fishing. Caught a few smaller rockfish and then hooked a ling cod... just under 24 inches but sure made the new 22". Caught a couple blacks and gophers then moved to another spot and hooked into another legal ling, but he jumped off my lap into the drink while I was measuring him up. Thats when I decided to go exploring the wide open ocean. Marked a few fish here and there but nothing was coming up. Then hooked a few squid on rockfish rig. Tried leaving one of the live ones on there but didn't catch anything on it. After drifting a while I caught my first Canary, which I guess I didn't catch on the camera. Sent her back down to the bottom to make more Canary babies. Later on I drifted over some structure and the fishfinder started beeping like crazy, dropped down and bang hooked into something good. It was really pulling and I thought to myself maybe my first red. Two seconds later here comes the red vermillion up from the deep. Sure was nice to finally catch one. Caught a smaller copper then hooked into a nice fat copper as well. At one point while I was snagged on the bottom I heard a little something and looked over my shoulder to see a fin disappear then this dark blue thing with a white spot up at the front either by its mouth or eye slowly went by about 5 feet under the water. He was about 30 feet away so I could see it with the polarized glasses, but really couldn't give a definite identity on the USO (unidentified swimming object) it didn't surface again. I drifted off my spot and didn't find it again, kinda was kicking myself that I left the GPS on shore. Its tough to tell which way you are actually moving out in the open when the current is going one way, the waves another and the slight breeze at another angle. It was getting late after 6 pm and my wife seemed like she was tired of sitting on shore over the radio, so I packed up and headed in.

Saturday met up with some friends and went hiking for a change and relaxed in the hot tub and pool in the evening.

Sunday was the last chance to get out and it was calm again. Had the GPS this time and tried the open water again. Looked and looked for fish but couldn't find them. Finally drifted over a reef and hooked another vermillion. Pulled out the GPS and marked the spot quick. Just spent time drifting over that place for the next couple hours and hooked a couple of nice olive rockfish, one got off right beside the boat and the other flipped out of my lap. Then caught a nice ling before it was time to head back in. Couldn't stay out long as we had to drive the 6 hours home to Loma Linda in Socal and get to the hospital at 9 pm for call. Lots of fun though and a great weekend. Oh almost forgot, while I was out there heard a pshhhhh, looked over my shoulder and saw a big fin come out of the water, sure looked like a Killer whale fin, pretty sweet, glad he left me alone. On shore a couple guys said on Saturday a kayak fisherman got rolled in shallow and snapped both of his rods off that weren't stowed. The other guy said a great white swam under his kayak a few days earlier, who knows, didn't stop me from going out.
