I was hoping anyone would have some tips to fish the surf around balboa. Would sand crabs work well right now? Hook size? Any gulp products?

The beach is very sloping around Balboa, and as a result the sand structure isn't that great for perch usually. If sand crabs are there I would definitely use them off the sand, but if you're on the pier you can't go wrong with mussels. Good luck.

Don't know anything about Balboa but surf fishing in general is a lot of fun on light gear. If you want to target perch, yellow fin croaker, and other smaller surf species excluding corbina you will generally have more sucess and a lot more fun on light equipment and light line. 6'-7' rod, medium-heavy action: 4-6lb tst line: 1/4-5/8oz weight.
Generally a Carolina rig for perch abd such, swimbaits or jerkbaits may be productive for slightly larger/powerfull species ex: shovelnose, halibut, wsb etc.
corbina fishing would be best suited with ultralight line for visibility factor but keep in mind they are Very fast and powerful.
Perch, croaker, walley, some shark: red flake motor oil grubs screw tail, sand crabs, ghist shrimp, mussel...anything found naturally
Halibut, wsb: 3in swimbaits, dropshot Zoom Flukes, Lucky Craft 110s

Gotta go, hope this helps. Best of luck!
