Nice crappie! Man, those puppies bite hard during overcasts and a few after the storms, known that there are plenty of bugs getting knocked down by the rain.

Beautiful crappie! LP has some huge crappie (yes that is a Black Crappie, I've never seen or heard of a White at LP). I think the reason for their big size is because of all the shad in the lake. Perris is just a huge food factory for all it's fish species.

Beautiful looking fish. It will be a couple of weeks before I can get back out there on the tube so I will have to just look at fish porn until then.

To be honest guys, that is a white crappie. There would be no question to a black if it was. You can go up to lake Gregory and find blacks all day long. You got one thing right, That lake is awesome for all species. I wish I was closer or I would go more. 2yrs ago I caught the biggest crappie of my life! I thought it was a 5 pound bass with no fight! Turned out to be a good eater. In fact, some of my biggest gils were caught in here as well.

White Crappie, black markings, form loose vertical bands down it's body. Where black crappie have black spots evenly distributed s across the entire side. Of course the surefire method is to count the dorsal fin spines. These are the sharp spines on top of the fish that tend to poke the heck out of me when I'm trying to retrieve them from my live well. White crappie have 6 of these spines where blacks have 7 or 8 of them. Blacks also have a more rounded body when viewed from the side while white crappie are more elongated.
When spawning. White Crappie well turn very dark, and so will the Black Crappie.

Therefore Fishmounter, you are correct! It's a Black Crappie! And a nice one at that. WTG!

Also, black crappie have an orange-ish eye, white crappie have silvery eyes.

SpinnerBaitKing- There is no question. That crappie QB7940 is holding is a Black. Now when they spawn and in certain water conditions, some Black Crappie are very dark, almost black. White Crappie have vertical barring that the Blacks don't have. There's other physical differences too, but this is the main obvious one. But if you want to call it a White Crappie, that's fine. Let's just say it is a very nice Lake Perris crappie.

Nice diffusion method Jeff  Any big crappie is a good crappie, which turned into filets. Simply accompanied by good seasoning with cooking methods, down the hatch, then out the chute :Envious:

Ditto that is a black crappie. The males are the ones who turn black during the spawn. El capitan in the spring has some of the most beautiful male black crappies the colors are phenominal. As does Isabella, piru, san antonio, castaic lagoon, diamond valley, and lopez.

Yep perris only has black crappie. The fish is a little more green and gold in person, the pic makes it appear a little lighter.

Yep we were targeting crappie, we fish em from spring till mid duck season sometime in november.

Fished about 15 feet deep. over a brush pile. using soft plastics. If they arent there keep moving folks.
