I've been doing a lot of fishing and not enough reporting, so here it goes,
My dad and I woke up around 4:30 and we're at spot 1 by about 4:50, ready to see if the beans wanted to come out and play.
Wind: south breeze
Water Temp: much colder than last week, probably 61-63
Tide: tide swing from low to incoming
Gear: 6 lb mono to 6 lb fluoro leader
Bait: Camo crack and sand crabs
My dad and spent the first 30 minutes scoping out holes and we planned to work this AO until around 9 as the tide filled in. We found all the troughs within walking distance and made mental notes as to where they were by identifying landmarks. Then, the fishing began as we waded out to reach the outer sandbar only accessible at low tide.
Dad gets a nice 16" YFC as the sun comes up.

Next up is a solid little bean.

At this point I am going WFO on perch about this size.

With a few nice sized Waldos thrown in, this one actually pulled some drag!

Then a SNGF showed up to play!

It continued on like this until about 8 when it was time to head back in off the sandbar as the tide was filling in our scoped out holes. We worked the first two with only small BSP to show for it, but the one we really had our eye on was coming up...
First cast! 19" of drag-burning beanage!

My first cast! Finally a slab!

For the next hour my dad and I pulled numerous beans and big BSP out of this hole using large half-dollar sized sandcrabs that were surprisingly abundant. Many of them were stolen of our hooks but the ones that weren't yielded nice fish!
We left AO 1 very satisfied, with these numbers to show for it:
Dad:
3 Beans
1 SNGF
13 BSP
1 Waldo
3 YFC
Me:
22 BSP
4 Waldo
2 SNGF
1 Bean
The next phase of our carefully planned morning was put into motion, as we broke out our 7' sticks and the hardbaits.
The weapons of fish subduction:
Flashminnow 110 SP in Metallic Sardine, Aurora Baby Croaker
Pointer 100 in Metallic Sardine
Bass Pro Shops LC FM110 Look-alike in Sardine
We fished from 930-1030 at AO 2 in Bolsa Chica, but unfortunately did not find any of the flat kind willing to play.
Me:
3 BSP to 12"
Dad:
3 BSP to 13"
1 SNGF
We hit AO 3 in a last ditch effort as it has produced hali's before, but when we got there around 11 it was blown out and the shorebreak made it hard to get the action right on the baits. Still, my dad and I managed not to get skunked, as we each got 1 more BSP, I snagged a feisty leopard shark, and he farmed what looked like a slightly sub-legal halibut.
The morning went extremely well except for the flatfish MIA. We're planning on heading out after some big leopards tonight, so hopefully I'll have another report ready for you all.
This is my last month of surf fishing before I head off to college, and I'm starting to realize how privileged I have been the last few years of my life to have such an amazing fishery right by my house, and to be part of a sport filled with such helpful and awesome people. I can say I'm truly thankful, and hope to one day be one of the guys like many of you are that kids like me can look up to in this sport.
Cheers and tight lines,
Travis
