I'm a newbie when it comes to saltwater fishing. What artificial lures & colors work best for yellow tail? Of course...I know nothing beats live bait, but I don't have bait tank set-up on my boat. I'm stuck using artificial lures until I get one rigged up, which won't be for a while. Do Rapala's work good? Any advice would be greatly appreciated :Big Grin:

This is not true. Surface irons and yo-yo can get reluctant fish to go crazy!

good colors: mint, blue white, brown, scrambled egg, chrome (yo-yo)

Bird **** got allot of attention last year and the year before. I did real good on the paddies round the 425 and hidden bank on this color for both Dorado and YT.

I've also caught quite a few on 5" root beer scampi's while fishing for calico bass, but they are usually smaller than the ones caught on iron. Probably wouldn't target yellowtail with scampi's but they do catch them.

IMO your best bet would be to locate them first by trolling Rapala Xrap Magnums (15,20,30) around areas with signs of life such as birds, meter marks or other indicators of feeding fish. Work the area slowly like 2-4 knots and when you hook up, toss some Salas 7x's or Tady 45's ( lite iron ) if they're on the surface and Salas 6X JR.'s ( heavy iron ) if they're deep. Color doesn't matter as long as the lures stand out. I like darker colors as they stand out more and create a better silhouette ( purple, black, blue, green ). Those colors tend to penetrate deeper down the water column so they may be more visible to fish at depth. Stay away from brighter colors ( red, orange, yellow ) if fishing yoyo iron deep as these longer wavelengths fade real quickly and will appear gray at depths greater than 100 or so feet. Hope it helps
