Got a invite on a 26' Wellcraft to chase Tuna :Big Grin:
Hit my buddies house in Garden Grove at midnight, guy with boat showed up at 1:00 am.
Launched Shelter Island then got bait, 1 1/2 scoops big horse dines.

Headed out towards the 230 heard alot of radio chatter that the 302 had nothing.
Working real hard to find some paddies but was pretty dry out there, found 4 paddies all day. Lots of Seiners working the border, 302 area, planes, helicopters.
Hit San Salvador then the East Butterfly.

The Bluefin would not show up after the good sunday counts ?
Everybody asking on the radio for anything, is was like they dissapeared.

Then after 2:00 pm Reporst coming in of some YT's on the paddies.
One boat got 8 YT's on a paddy. Then they showed few birds and BFT breaking.
the first school the Captain tosses a Dine and it races to the boat, I'm chumming.
He re-casts and his reel takes off 1 2 3 4 5 he sets the hook. His first Tuna.
Us other 2 are soaking bait, The sunk out fast. Only a few in this school.

Dude is on this fish for a hour on 20 lb, finally color after kicking his asss for a hour.
My bud gets a perfect head gaff and the 40 lb BFT hits the deck.

Then the rest of the day watching for Terns we found 2 spots with BFT crashing.
They sunk out quick. Seemed like only a couple fish breaking, no big schools.

Back home at 10 pm, bummed but was still a great day, Gotta go to work.

I have some pics on my phone.
Maybe tonight I'll try to upload?

Marzocchi; We need some big Mexican south swells to push the fish and warm water up.
It's not too late yet, hang in there. It is still warmer than last year already.
Makos and Threshers are starting to show.

The 1986 Wellcraft with the Chevy 350/Mercruiser only burned about 60 gallons of gas.
That same run in my buddies 2006 24' Ranger with a Mercury 250 4 stroke would have been closer to 100 gallons. 14 hours without shutting off the motor and we punched it the last 10 miles in.

I was pretty impressed with the range and mileage, But having that motor box on deck to deal with kinda sucks. When the fish was circling going from one corner to the other then stepping around the motor box while he was holding his rod out and having to clear the outdrive/prop was tricky, but he pulled it off. After joking about the fighting belt being a 'pussybelt' he never asked for it. Lol

The owner was sick and barfed a couple times, slept down below. Had to wake him up on the breaking fish. After 5 minutes into this fish he was all better and then when the fish hit the deck and after cleaning up all the blood he said.

'Hand me a beer' :Beer Toast: then he had a sandwich. The rest of the day he was fine.
Moral of the story; Catching Tuna Cures Sea Sickness.
