After having the opportunity to share a day in the surf with Arthur and a few of the SWAT Team, Robert, John and Justin in honor of our Friend Fisherman 57 and having a challenge thrown out to me by Arthur to become part of the SWAT Family I made it a personal goal to catch and release a legal halibut. So it has now become a “quest for a legal halibut”.

Early in the week I started to get my gear in order for the first of who knows how many missions to the O.C. beaches to make my goal. The plan was to hit the surf at grey light early Friday morning and work the beach as hard as I could to see if a legal was in the cards for me. My plans changed when I received a text from the SWAT Chief of Staff asking me what my plans were for Thursday or Friday?
I told Arthur that I was planning to hit the beach lone wolf style Friday morning and told him of the goal I had set to get the invitation into the SWAT Family. Arthur’s replied that he wanted to be there when it happened so we made plans to meet at our rendezvous point before light and hit the beach SWAT style. I have to say that I was excited to get to spend the day in the surf with my Good Friend and I’ve got to admit I was feeling pretty good about my chances now.

Not wanting to disappoint the SWAT Commander I set the alarm for 3:00am, loaded up my gear and headed south. Once I got to the beach I started putting my gear in order, jumped into my waders so I could show Arthur I was serious about this mission. It wasn’t long before Arthur showed up and he too jumped into gear and went over the game plan for the day. And you know what, even after my head start he was still ready to fish before I was!

Almost ready when Arthur arrived…….
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/007-24.jpg

Just before heading down to the water Arthur stopped me to tell me he had a little gift for me and pulled this Wingnut customized L.C. out of his pack and told me that this just might be the lure that will do the job……and I have no doubts that my customized “57” L.C. will be the lure that will get the one I’m looking for……

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0208.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0209.jpg

Once we got down to the water the game was on. I know Arthur had just as high of hopes as I did that we’d get the legal halibut but it was quite evident that it wasn’t going to be easy because of all the salad in the water. It was near impossible to get the L.C. back without having to shake off the weeds before the next cast. It was definitely getting a little discouraging but Arthur, the positive thinker that he is, suggested we just keep walking to see if we could find some cleaner surf.
After a short hike we found an area that looked good and started fishing. It didn’t take long for Arthur to make the first hook up and brought in a short halibut that really got my hopes up but Arthur didn’t seem quite as excited as I was. Ho Hum another shorty……….

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0202.jpg

A few casts later I was able to make a connection and brought in this small croaker. Yeah baby, I got one!……

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/008-24.jpg

We both felt pretty good about getting the skunk off and now realized it was time to get back to fishing. We both made many more casts and we both fought off more salad but we were both able to bring in one more short apiece before packing it up to hit another stretch of South O.C. beach……

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0203.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/009-22.jpg

We both agreed that we might need to go in search for some cleaner water so we jumped in our cars and headed off for Area-2. This was a stretch of beach that had me a little intimidated our last trip. Not the beach itself but the hike in and out. It may have intimidated me a little last time out but not this time. I was on a mission and I wasn’t going to let a little hiking get in my way.
Arthur suggested we leave one car at our ending point and take the other to our starting point witch made good sense to me not having to back track to our cars. Arthur told me it wasn’t bad at all. It was about 2.5 miles………….My reply to Arthur was “No Problem”……..my mind was thinking “HELP ME!”

We parked my truck at the end point as planned and I jumped in Arthur’s car to drive down to the start point and we were off. During the hike down to the water It looked pretty good and my hopes were getting pretty high that we were going to get into some fish but as the day wore on it looked like the fishing was going to be a little tough. Although we didn’t have the problems with salad like we did earlier the fish just weren’t interested in what we had to offer. I did however, have the opportunity to get a few tips from Arthur and to get to just stand back and watch the master at work……

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0205.jpg

This a pretty cool picture…..look at the power behind this cast……
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0207.jpg

Saw these guys on the way. Looks to me like they were in search of a catch of their own…..slow day for them too
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/012-20.jpg

Just because the fish don’t want to cooperate I never let it get me discouraged. It just makes me want to come back even more. The important thing here is that I got to spend a Great day on the water with a Good Friend.:Thumbs Up:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/013-16.jpg

As the day began to wind down I knew that there will be more missions in search of that elusive legal halibut and after the final climb out of the beach I had time to reflect……..and catch my dang breath!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/015-17.jpg

A legal halibut and an invitation to the SWAT Family?……..I’m sure it will happen…..how many missions will it take?
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-22%20Surf%20with%20Arthur/IMG_0211.jpg

Arthur, I’m glad you and I had the chance to hit the beach like we agreed to a year ago. You have become a Great Friend and it was good to get to talk and do a little reminiscing about past Team 57 events and our Good Friend Dana fisherman 57” Rea. I know you’ll be busy in another endeavor the next few months but I hope that when you do get to hit the water you will enjoy Good Times with Good Friends.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Like I mentioned to you on Friday Terry, I already told the rest of the guys to get ready to welcome another "Brother" to the S.W.A.T. family. We all know, that with your resolve, it's just a matter of time until your achieve your goal. Somewhere out there, is that legal Halibut carrying your golden ticket. :Big Grin: I certainly wish that I would be there by your side when that happens, but with all systems go with my business project, I think you will have it all wrapped up before we will fish together again.

The fishing on Friday was dreadfully slow... But that's how it goes and comes with the territory. Everybody who fish with me know of my pet peeve in the surf. Salad! I can deal with just about any adverse condition, high swells, murky water, crappy tide movement, on-shore wind... But a heavy concentration of weeds where it's virtually inpossible to work your lure effectively, is so frustrating. I KNOW that the fish were there, but the LC can only swim for a few yards before getting wrapped up. After about an hour of this nonsense, my patience finally ran out.

I didn't really mind the slow day, it gave us a chance to catch up a little. Telling old stories and sharing new ones. Even getting caught up on a bit of FNN gossip... :Big Smile:
Just like what I used to do with our good friend. Thanks for letting me crash your solo session Terry. I appreciate your support for S.W.A.T., your shinning example of what a perfect family man should be and most of all, I appreciate your frienship.

Now hurry up and get that legal Halibut. You actually need to get TWO. The first, to validate your membership to S.W.A.T., the second, to get you a place on the LC Challenge Leaderboard. :Envious:

Like I said... it's just a matter of time. Your future S.W.A.T. Brothers & Sisters are all looking forward to that day. I know that they're also ready and willing to help you get it done. Don't be surprised if you get a few invitations here very soon...

Until we meet again...

I read this quote, and it made me think of you...

What a man accomplishes in a day depends upon the way in which he approaches his tasks. When we accept tough jobs as a challenge...and wade into them with happiness and enthusiasm, miracles can happen. When we do our work with a dynamic conquering spirit, nothing is impossible and we get things done.

Great report Terry. I know it was a serious mission for Arthur to hook you up with that first elusive legal and I know it will come very soon as long as you are diligent in your efforts. A little blind luck always helps too but you have been taught by one of the best surf fisherman I've ever known.I know Arthur really enjoyed the time spent with you on the sand just talking about Dana and all of the other great times spent with great friends found here on the FNN.
A little patience and a little more time my friend and it will all come together ....... You WILL be a SWAT member soon.....I can feel it in my BONES.....LOL
Thanks for taking the time to share.

Arthur,

It was during our trip to the surf that I made it my goal to catch and release my first legal halibut . I had a great time fishing with you, robert, John and Justin and I was very impressed with how efficiently you guys worked the surf. I was in good company that day and enjoyed every minute of it.

Now as far as crashing my solo session, I couldn't have been more pleased to get your text inviting me to fish with you and when you said that you wanted to be there when I got that first legal I wanted it to happen just as bad as you did My Friend.
Although the salad made the fishing tough and sometimes agravating I look at it this way, The important thing is that we had the opportunity to get together like we agreed to do a year ago and we had the opportunity to talk just like we agreed to do. I enjoyed every minute of it!
Even though I wasn't able to get the halibut we wanted I'll assure you that when I do you will be the first to know.:Thumbs Up:

I just want to say thanks for spending the day with me Friday and Thank You for your Friendship. I've got a great deal of respect for you and you sir are definitely one of the Good Guys!
I'm also looking forward to becoming a part of the SWAT Brothers and Sisters. That My friend will be an Honor.

Oh and by the way, thanks for waiting for me on the hike out of Area-2.

Mike,

I know how bad Arthur wanted to be there for my first legal from the surf and believe me I wanted it to happen while he was there too. Like I said before just fishing with a Good Friend was the important part of the day. I'm confident the legal halibut will come and it will mean more that I had to work for it. I'll even insist that Arthur make the announcement.
Believe me I went to school on arthur all day and even got some good tips on what to look for in the surf.
Trolly and I still talk about the day Team Trolltoon went to SWAT boot camp with you and arthur. We had a lot of laughs and learned a lot from both of you guys. I even got my first surf calico bass that day! It would definitely be a riot getting another trip together.
I hope to see you again soon My friend but until then I'll be hitting the surf as much as I can and in the evenings Trolly and I will be chasing some other monsters of the deep.....

I can tell you every one of my A.O.'s, but you would still have to catch the fish there, easier said than done.

You don't have to wait for the weather pattern to change, it's been great out there... and the water temperature has been steadily rising. It's all about the timing right now, knowing when to hit the water to get the fish. But that's a lesson for another time.

fishincrave,

Thanks for the reply and words of encouragement.

I must say Arthur has given me some great knowledge for fishing the surf. Now all I have to do is put it all together and make this goal a reality.

Terry,
You'll definitely stick that legal halibut soon! It's always hardest to get that first one, but after that they seem to show up a little more frequently. Looking forward to welcoming you to SWAT!

Made plans late in the week to meet a co-worker, (New member Nipple Twister or NT for short) at Huntington Beach for a quick surf session before I headed off to meet Trollmiester for some night fishing.
We agreed to meet up at around 5:15 to see what the surf had to offer us. However, just before turning in for the night I recieved a call from one of the SWAT Officers, Bones, and Mike says, "hey I hear you are going to be down in Huntington tomorrow morning and was wondering if you'd like to hook up?".........Well heck yes I would! Funny, not much get past SWAT. Their intel is quite impressive.
So I give NT a call and tell him we'll be having a SWAT Dignitary with us and he thought that was pretty cool since he's been reading the SWAT reports for a while now.

John and I arrived at the beach around 5:00am, got our gear together and decided to go ahead and head down to the water. I gave Mike a call and left him a message that we would be down in the water and we'll be looking for him.
Once we hit the water it didn't take too long and I hooked up to a pretty good size fish. Oh man what a fight and all during the tug of war I kept thinking to myself, "Is this it, could this be the one I'm looking for?" Once I was able to get it in close enough to have a look it turned out to be a pretty good size shovelnose guitar fish. a little dissapointing but a lot of fun all the same.
John headed back down to the water and I gave Mike a call to see if he was at the beach yet. Mike said "Yep I'm here and I'm working my way over to you now.
Just before Mike made his way over to us John hooked up to a fish of his own and brought in a nice croaker to take the skunk off.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-30%20Part-2%20hali%20quest/IMG_0237.jpg

Once Mike showed up and I introduced him to John he gave us a few pointers on how we should attack the beach then we got back to fishing and working our way down the beach.
It didn't take Mike long before he was hooked up to a croaker of his own. The skunk was off all three of us and we got back to business. Mike was able to hook up to a couple more fish one being a short halibut but I guess Mike needed to show us the hands free release technique.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-30%20Part-2%20hali%20quest/IMG_0240-1.jpg

After taking a few pics of Mike's fish I knew I had better get back to tossing that L.C. and first cast I feel a bump and set the hook. I could tell right off it wasn't big but I just wanted to see what it was.........I got the fish in close and saw a flash of white......It's a halibut. short of what I need but it was a good sign.:Envious:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-30%20Part-2%20hali%20quest/BolasChica073011d1.jpg

Well, just getting a halibut made me pretty happy and got my hopes up a little too.

Mike, John and I spent the remainder of the day working the shore but it seemed like our luck was running out and well, time was growing short and I had to think about getting home to clean up my surf gear and get the cat gear ready.
Mike suggested we work another hole he spotted on the way over to meet us before we called it. John and I agreed just wasn't time to give up so we worked the last spot pretty hard and what do you know I hooked up with another fish!:Envious: Half way in I saw that flash of white and it was another Halibut. Yes it was short but it was a halibut!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-30%20Part-2%20hali%20quest/IMG_0244.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-30%20Part-2%20hali%20quest/IMG_0245.jpg

Well, the second effort at the legal halibut is in the books and although it didn't happen today I know with a little patience, persistence and time in the surf it is going to happen.

John, it was a blast to finally hook up with you and fish our home turf buddy. I know you've been studying the reports and collecting the gear you need to hit the surf. we'll be meeting up again soon to hit our home turf in search of a legal.
Thanks again for coming along.:Thumbs Up:

Mike, it was a pleasure to have one of SWATS Officers with us today and I hope we'll be able to hook up again. I had a blast reminiscing about the glory days at DVL and the SWAT Boot Camp you and Arthur put me and Trolly through.
Thanks again for the tips and information. The information is greatly appreciated and trust me I'll put it to work.
I appreciated the phone call and I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to hook up with you again sometime soon.:Thumbs Up:

Oh, and by the way, I learned something today............waders are much more comfortable!

Terry,

Thanks for sharing your quest that I am sure began before "Team Trolltoon" hit the surf last fall for that first torturous hike down to the waters that would produce some epic reports last fall by the "SWAT Team" It will be just a matter of time before you come through with that magical hook set and know right then that you have succeeded on your quest!

Most would be focusing on trying to figure out where you all were fishing and what you were giving away as to the background to let them find the spot! I am very analytical at times and see other things that pop to my attention.

It looks like the choice has been made that that you will succeed on trip # 4. Throw away number 4, and 2 of the other numbers that are not divisible by 3, then add the 3 remaining numbers and you will see you were sent a message from above that you will recognize!

Steve,

I had to get some chalk and find some concrete big enough to do some ciferin' and I came up with a message from a Friend letting me know he was following my quest for the legal hali. That was way too cool! I'll get it for ya "57".......

I had done some surf fishing years ago with my Dad and fishing for surf perch with trout gear at Huntington after work but nothing like the surf fishing Arthur and bones introduced me and Trolly too not long ago. I knew then that I was going to have two types of fishing to enjoy. Hunting big cats and casting the L.C. for halibut. Two completely different styles of fishing but both great fun with Friends.

I'm glad you appreciated the report and I hope we'll have the opportunity to fish together again. Once I reach my goal and My Friend arthur confirms it I'd love to have the honor of fishing with you in the "Spotted Fever". I'll be looking forward to it.:Thumbs Up:

It will definitely be a hoot to get together again.:Envious:

I'll be able to hit the surf once or twice before I leave for a week so I'll keep you posted and I'd really like to get together after I get back whether or not I've reached my goal. Hey this is so much fun I'll keep it going and maybe try for that big halibut prize.:Thumbs Up:

I decided that since I was going to be out of town for a week I needed to get at least one maybe two more shots at that legal halibut so I decided to take and extra vacation day and hit Huntington Beach to see if success was in the cards for me.
I started out in grey light throwing the L.C. Arthur gave to me the first shot at the legal and working my way up the beach. It was one of those days where I really felt it was going to happen so I made every cast with expectation of hooking up.
It wasn't long and on the retrieve I felt a sharp bump, reeled in some slack, felt tension and set the hook. From that point on it was hang on and hope I wasn't going to get spooled. All I could do at this point was watch the line start to dissapear. After what seemed like forever I was able to make a little ground on whatever I had but that was after I decided I had better start chasing it. I'd make ground and then I'd lose ground. This went on for quite some time. There were even a couple of guys on surf boards come in to watch along with a guy visiting from Arizona doing some photography. It was pretty cool having everyone root for the fisherman.
I don't know how long the battle went on but I was finally able to get it up to shallow water and get hold of it.
It turned out to be the biggest Leo I've ever caught and a pretty cool way to start the day.
Here's a pic my new friend from Arizona took for me. The guy actually waded into the water in slacks and a nice pair of leather shoes to take the pic. He was just as excited as I was.
Here's the pics he took for me........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-04%20-%20Part%203%20Hali%20Quest/IMG_0250.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-04%20-%20Part%203%20Hali%20Quest/IMG_0249.jpg

After getting pics of the fish I got it back in the water, caught my breath a little and got back to work. On the way up the beach I was only able to hook up one short halibut and decided I had better start back down the beach and head home.
On the way back the very same thing happened again and right after feeling the rod load up it was on just like the first time. This time I knew I had better start chasing whatever it was and as I was going up the beach I noticed my new friend from Arizona off in the distance still taking pictures but this time his focus wasn't on the surfers it was on me. He waded into the water and asked me if I wanted him to take pics of this one too. So, as I was holding on to the rod I gave him my camera and went back to work.
Once again I don't really know how long it took but this time it was clear this leo was bigger than the first one!
(:Rolls Eyes: I think I've heard that one before.)
This one was pretty tough to get to where I could take a shot at grabbing him and once I got to where I could take a shot at grabbing the fish it made a big tail slap, my line broke and he was gone!
I wouldn't have stressed over losing it but the damn thing took the lure Arthur gave me!

Yeah, I know the last one sounds like a good fish story but damn, it was fun.

Well, my third try didn't produce the elusive legal halibut but it did make for a memorable day on the water.:Thumbs Up:

WOW TERRY.....Awesome job on that beautiful Leo Brotha!
They are just so damn majestic! You should have put a tape to her but I know you have me beat. Your a pretty big guy and I bet your leo is pretty close to Arthurs PB! Considering that they only grow to a max of about 6ft your's is a prize and a very rare catch on an artificial. It's the time of the year that the Leo's have bred and are moving into the shallower areas to speed up the gestation period. As their young grow inside of them they are on the chew and definately more agressive. 13 months ago I was with Arthur,Steve and Roy up north when we saw tons of big leos in the shallows. Arthur and I both hooked up but also came unbuttoned at the same time!
I have to get my son out there soon to get him on his first Leo.
Don't worry about the lost LC.....it definately did it's job!
I had a very simuliar experience with my PB Leo but she was smaller than your first one dude! It took me a good solid 20 minutes to beach her but my heart was pumping as I watched my spool empty!
I was pretty much shaking when I got her to the sand. I would have given anything to see you on those fish.
You are definately SWAT material my friend and I'm gonna tell ya something......That first legal halibut will not even come close to the two fights you experienced today but I'm sure it's only a matter of time.

I have to admit the leopard shark is a very beautiful animal up close and as I found out today the larger models are very very strong. I had the drag set to about all that 14lb line could hold and had to chase both of them up and down the beach.............was I tired heck yes!
I still wish I'd have taken a measurement.......actually didn't think about it until you mentioned it to me earlier on the phone.:Embarrassed: But, like I said to Arthur earlier my mission is focused on the legal halibut...........all the rest has been iceing on the cake.

Beautiful Leopard Shark Terry, like Mike said, they are majestic and should always be released.

Too bad you didn't put a tape to it, looks just as big or bigger than Arthur's. :Envious:
I think the Commander's leo taped out close to 60 inches. :EyePop:
Too close to tell, we'll call it a tie!

Phuong,

You know I've been studying the pictures and I have to agree Arthur and I do look a lot alike but the best way to tell us apart is I seem to fill out my waders more.
Oh wait a minute, now looking at it a little closer and considering the fact that my invitation into SWAT depends upon logging in a legal halibut and definitely final approval from the Boss, Arthur, I definitely think Arthur has me be here.:Envious:

So far I've released everything I've caught in the surf and I will definitely continue to release any leo's I get.

Thank you Sir for the reply and I hope we have the opportunity to cross paths sometime soon.:Thumbs Up:

Terry,

What a great catch from the sands on Round 3 of your quest for that legal Flattie! Your play by play of the fight was awsome! :Not Worthy: :Thumbs Up:

Most would would have called it a day and went to the local Pub, :Beer Toast: instead you brushed it off as a very nice PB by-catch that was not your target or focus point! To bad that the second encounter took away your used "Weapon of Mass Destruction" I know it meant a lot to you but it looks like replacement ammo is already on its way! :Secret:

I have a felling that it was taken away by a great friend that wished you that "You will be awarded some Great Honor" and therefore delay your "Surf Legend" status to trip #4 as he predicted!!!! :Big Grin:

I look forward to waiting for your "Round 4 Report" that apears will be slightly delayed while you handle some personnel bussiness!

OHHH! I can't wait for that report!

Steve,

I've seen some pretty amazing reports from the SWAT Team and new PB's are the norm with all of you. I'm looking forward to having the honor of fishing along side some Surf Lends again real soon.

I guess I have a bad habit of setting a goal and going after it with all the intensity I have in me. I'll keep the pics in my photo album but the pic I want to post right now is the legal halibut.
That leo will always be in my photo album along with all of my surf fish as will hopefully soon the most important one.

I was definitely bummed to lose my "57" Ayu but seeing the new one Arthur has already produced for me I'm sure it will have signifigant purpose when it's put into play. I'm sure our Good Friend is following the progress and having a good time seeing the comeraderie and suport of the SWAT Team.

Round Four is coming up and I'm hoping the prediction is right.............only time will tell.:Thumbs Up:

Thanks for the reply and encouragement and hope to cross paths with you sometime soon.:Thumbs Up:

Native Gal.......Hello!,

Thank you very much for posting and I'm smiling from ear to ear reading that you are following My Quest.

I'm going to have to take a short break in the effort to attend a convention all next week in Las Vegas but one thing for sure I'll be occasionally losing my concentration thinking about that Lucky trip number four.

i'm sure our Friend Dana is following the effort and if poseidon feels it necessary to test me I'm ready for the challenge 'cause I've got a legal in my sights! when I get it it will be dedicated to Mr. 57.

I've caught smaller Leo's but never anything like the two I hooked up to on this trip. They both gave my equipment a tough test and with a little effort and me having to cover a lot of ground the job was done. What beautiful fish they are and what a great feeling it was to see them both swim back into the surf.

i'll be putting my new lure to the test real soon and I'm sure it will be the one to get the job done.:Thumbs Up:

Well part-4 is now in the books but unfortunately I let down those who had it predicted I'd get the job done on the fourth try. I gave it my best though and the Quest will continue until I make the goal My Good Friend Arthur set for me!

The day started out in the Hermosa Beach area. After picking up my regular Catfishin' Buddy Trollmeister we headed down to the rendesvous point where we agreed to meet our new FNN member Nipple Twister.........(only a plumber could use that name):LOL:
Trolly and I parked, geared up and headed down to the beach where I wasn't surprised to see NT already in the water working the L.C.
After introductions the three of us hit it and started working up the beach. I must have really got into the zone because when I looked back to see where Trolly and NT were and all I saw was two figures way off in the distance. I kinda felt bad that one of them may have caught a fish and I wasn't there to get the pic. I was on a mission and my target had not yet been engaged so I had to get back to work. Unfortunately there was no lack of junk in the water and it made a somewhat aggravating casting and picking off the salad, casting and picking off the salad.
A short while later they made there way to where I was and the decision was made to work our way back and hit an Area Trolly had fished not long ago and an area where NT used to do some surf fishing years ago.
Now those of you who do not Know My Good Friend Trolly you need to know that sometimes Trolly can lose his focus.........In this picture you see that I caught him off making sand castles rather than attacking the surf.........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/110820-Surf%20Trolly-n-NT/IMG_0265.jpg

Once we got Trolly back in the game we headed off to the cars and headed off to the south a few miles to the hot spot........
Well, like it was starting the day out once Trolly and I drove up we saw that NT was already geared up and heading down the trail so Trolly and I hurried to catch up.
We spread out and started to work the area. Trolly was the first to beat the skunk with a thornback ray.......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/110820-Surf%20Trolly-n-NT/IMG_0266.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/110820-Surf%20Trolly-n-NT/IMG_0268.jpg

Now that the skunk was off it was time to really get down to work and we all got back to business. All told for the remainder of the day I was able to hook into six of these guys but only bothered to take the camera out for the first one......After all my focus was on another species the entire day.........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/110820-Surf%20Trolly-n-NT/IMG_0269.jpg

Now I've got to give NT some good press here. I looked over at him several times to see him throwing and working the L.C. as hard as he could. The guy didn't let up. Twice we saw him hooked up to what looked like good fish only to have them come unbuttoned before we could get sight of whatever he had.
I have to say I was rootin' for ya NT............I'm sure next time out will be different.

Like I mentioned earlier, my focus today was on that now very elusive legal halibut and although today was just not the day the quest will continue..........:Thumbs Up:

Here's a few more pics from todays mission.........

Did I say Trolly sometimes loses focus........this ain't catfishin' Buddy!

And finally, my support crew for the day......
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/110820-Surf%20Trolly-n-NT/IMG_0263.jpg

Arthur, after I got your text last night I did have high hopes of making trip-4 the one to get the legal halibut and I certainly didn't want to let you down My Friend but this is just going to make the day I earn my invitation to SWAT all that much sweeter! All I can hope is that when you and the SWAT Brothers and Sisters meet to make the decision you'll all agree that i earned it the hard way.......I worked for it.
You assigned me the mission and I plan to carry it out Buddy. I'm sure that with the artillery you supplied me I'll make it happen.:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

......1) having never fished that beach before and 2) meeting Trolly. A huge thank you for the invite, what a great morning, even though I got skunked it didn't matter. We fished it hard, bantered back and forth, laughed my *** off.
I can clearly see why Pontoon gets a lot of fish, he is a freakin machine. He has his mind set, he has done his home work and he will make it happen. Like he said it wasn't long before he was a distant dot on the beach, Trolly and I where sharing stories as we moved down the beach, I grew up in the same area so it was fun talking about the 'hood. Trolly is a great guy that seems to be able to associate with anyone, can't wait for the next time. I don't think I stopped smiling all the way home.
Conditions where not the best and clearly the bite was not on so the the two jackles decided to show the new guy another spot so a quick drive :Cart:and we were back in the surf, with Pontoon getting into some fish I was having no luck at all. Got some serious bite but I guess I need to work on my landing ability. Coming unbuttoned 3 times! Pontoon had a spot but was willing to share so he and Trolly had me move into the "zone" giving me direction as to where to cast so I start working it and nothing. No worries, having a good time none the less but then Pontoon is still getting fish :Fishing Catch:right in the spot I was just in . Is there such a thing as a "fish magnet"? Trolly gets a couple as well and then they both start in on calling me something about a farmer, I don't know, must be a inside thing.
Regardless, I still had a great damn time and again thx for the invite!
I said I would be trying again in the morning out front at my home beach ( what a morning that turned out to be) and that they were both welcome to join me, we said our goodbyes , they went north I headed south and did a little scouting on the way home.
Still learning, thanks for the education fellas, loved it!

NT,

I'm glad you enjoyed the session in the surf with me and Trolly. You can see now why he and I have fished together for so long now.

I've got to tell you I have really been impressed with your interest in surf fishing. It doesn't seem like too long ago we were talking about throwing the L.C. for the halibut. You did homework of your own, purchased the gear you needed and even took the time to attend Bill Varneys seminar. I'm sure we'll be seeing more reports of your own real soon. (Kinda like todays report)

Okay okay so you beat me to it!:Thumbs Up:

After getting shut out of any size halibut yesterday I just didn't want to call it for the week and as we were all parting yesterday NT mentioned that he was thinking seriously about hitting the home turf in the morning and I should join him if possible. My reply, "Heck yes". Trolly had a late night planned but said he'd like to try and make it too. So the three of us were going to have another shot at the surf.

I've been so focused on getting the legal flattie that I woke up long before the alarm went off and went out to load up the truck. One thing led to another and while waiting for Trolly I was geared up and ready to go. Shortly before it was go time I got a call from Trolly who told me he wasn't going to make it. This meant Trolly had a good time last night. It had to be for him to miss a fishing trip.:Envious:
So, I headed off to the beach to meet NT for another surf session. But not before I made a stop for coffee. with the looks I got from the guy behind the counter at the coffee shop I don't think he ever saw someone geard up and ready to do battle with halibut.

As soon as I parked the truck it was clear NT wasn't waiting for no one......the guy was already on the water. I finishe my coffee and headed down to the beach. I saw NT right away casting the L.C. and got right in line working our way down the beach.
The conditions were great. The water was clear with no salad and the waves seemed only to be around two feet. Perfect!

I'd say after about thirty minutes of casting my L.C. got slammed not ten feet away from me. I knew right away that I had my target from the flash of white and the battle was on. In the water the thought crossed my mind that this might be the one! but after getting it up on the beach I had my doubts but it was still close enough to measure. (Another first in the Quest.....a halibut worth measuring)
The fish measured in the 19 1/2" range. Not the one I needed for My Buddy Arthur but I'm getting closer......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-21%20-%20Surf%20Fishing%20-%20JT/IMG_0275.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-21%20-%20Surf%20Fishing%20-%20JT/IMG_0276.jpg

I got the fish back in the water as quickly as I could but was a little concerned about the damage the lure did. I'm hoping it survives to become someone elses legal some day.

I knew I had to get back at it so I got back down to business throwing the L.C. and thinking about what I had just learned seeing that fish hit so close to me in the trough.
I would occasionally look back to see how NT was doing and noticed he was dropping back a little. I later learned he was having trouble with his reel and thinking about going back for another one just before he went bendo with a fish of his own.Seeing he was on I statrted making my way back to get a pic. As i got closer I see NT lift the fish up to the beach and the fish making one last effort to get back to the water. Then I see NT freeze and make a move that I hear is called the "Panic foot save"
once I got a close look at NT's hali I knew it was legal and he had his first legal flattie since he got hooked on fishing the surf......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-21%20-%20Surf%20Fishing%20-%20JT/IMG_0280.jpg

After the pics and congratulations I had to get back to business because time was running out and I had a family commitment to keep.
After working the beach for another hour it was time for me to call it a day. I knew it was going to be a short effort today but I know that with a little patience and persistence that legal hali will come my way. I may not have accomplished my goal today but it's getting closer and I was there when NT got his first legal.
All things considered, it was another great day in the surf!:Thumbs Up:

PT, Patience and Persistence you got that covered.

Those dang HBs can get you all jacked up Huh?
I got spoiled on my first surf trip for em. 2 keepers in one day and then NOTHING for MONTHS. Made up for it this year though, thanks to my SWAT brothers.

You have the right heart for it that's for sure. I see you getting one before the season is over, maybe 2.
Keep on working it. Maybe Arthur needs to Touch your ROD:Shocked:

Bill,

I just responded to your report where you and Mikey tore up the WSB!......Awesome report!

I knew when Arthur threw down the offer to join up with the Elite SWAT Team it was going to take a lot of effort. Especially after the 2.6 mile workout he put me through. I think he was just testing my sincerity..........He knew going in that it was going to be work and I'm up for it.
Now as far as Arthur touching my rod I was hoping I could do it without intervention but it's starting to look like I may need it.
I'll overnight him the rod tonight.........Maybe I'll just take it to him.

Thanks for the reply and encouragement..........:Thumbs Up:

Trip number 4 was to be special and it was, time with Trolly on the water and his hilarious stories it's allgood. Your week off got ya a lil outta the zone but you'll get that legal. I thoroughly enjoy your persistence in your quest. You definitely are a worker. Better than taking the easy way out, being led to the spot, kinda like the cherry pickers who fish stocking days, lol. My money is on you and I know mission will be accomplished soon. Personally the Leo was more exciting to see you catch. Take care, looking forward to the legal report. Trolly rocks!

Terry,

Great to see you back out on the hunt for that elusive legal butt! Even though some of us saw a vision that it would happen on a particular trip and put the added pressure on you you still came through with some impressive number of flatties of the wrong kind and then came close with one of the right kind!

Poseidon is just testing your will and reward you when the timing is right and I look forward to that day very soon! Keep pounding your way through the adversity and you will succeed very soon!

That pic of your great friend Trolly and his sand castle looks to me like his way of some comedy pointed at your co-worker Nipple Twister. :Secret:

There was definitely a lot of pressure on trip 4 and it would have been pretty cool to have celebrated a "Mission Accopmlished' post afterward but that's the way it goes. I had been in touch with the SWAT Commander most of the week discussing the status of the mission "Quest for a Legal" and I think he was getting a little concerned with the complexity of my assignment. I think the commander was a little concerned with the complexity of the assignment and concerned with my focus on the job at hand. So, it was agreed he was to assist me in todays assault to interrogate and release a legal. My plan worked! I got to fish with a Very good friend once again.

At just about turn in time last night I got the text from Arthur with the rendezvous point and instructions to meet at 5:30 as well as instructions to be geared up and ready for the hike into the zone. Believe me, I wasn't going to let the man down. I was there ready to go when he pulled up. Well almost.

Here's where I 've got to break from the report for just a moment and make note of the fact that I appreciate Arthurs Friendship. If you have been following the reports you've noticed that Arthur has been one of my biggest supporters giving me encouragement as well as the weapons I need to carry out the goal to bring in a legal and join the SWAT Family.
today I have to say to Arthur that I know how hard you have been working in an endeavor of your own. That in itself has to take a toll on you mentally and physically. But, after three of your days off relaxing doing what you love to do, fish, you found the time to meet up with me and take me to one of your most productive spot. Arthur, Thank You My Friend. I enjoyed fishing with you.:Thumbs Up:

Well, session number six started out with very high hopes of getting the job done and having Arthur witness the catch but as mentioned many times Poseidon wasn't ready to let go with the prize just yet.
Arthur, as usual, insisted I take the lead and pointed me in the right direction instructing me to fan out in each area. As hard as I tried it just wasn't in the cards. The salad was once again hindering the process and the fish just weren't interested. I've been through these days before and never let them bother me. it will just make the day the goal is reached all that much more sweet. I just hope it happens on a day Arthur and my new SWAT Friends are there.
Arthur and I worked our way up and down the beach with the only fish brought to the beach being a small leo.
Once we worked every possible section of the beach we could Arthur and I both decided to call it a day and head out towards home both of us planning to hit at least one more beach. Never wanting to give up.

Arthur, Thank You My friend for wanting to put me on to a fish and for spending the morning with me Buddy. We'll get the mission done and I hope you are there.:Thumbs Up:

Also, on a side note, the mission has had a little mystery added to it. As we parted the Commander handed me a package with instructions not to open it until the mission was completed.............I've got a feeling the "Mission Completed" report will be very special!

Priceless, the commander deep in thought.......Hope he wasn't thinking he put the wrong agent on the job?........
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-08-26%20-%20Part%206%20Surf%20with%20arthur/005.jpg

On the ride back to O.C. I just couldn't let the rest of the morning go without just one more shot thinking how cool it would be to shoot the Commander a text that the mission was complete with the target interviewed, photographed and released so I decided to stop off at one more beach close to home.
As I was looking for a place to park I noticed NT's jeep parked in his usual early morning assault spots. I had to smile. I had a feeling he would be there in search of a quarry of his own.
I geared up and headed down to the beach spotting NT off in the distance and decided I'd work my way up the beach. Once I caught up to him the look on his face was priceless. What the heck are you doing here?
NT told me that he had got two shorts already and was working his way back down the beach to head home and prep for day two of his surf fishing and hunting vacation.
We fished for another hour with me at least bringing a shorty to the beach for a quick photo and instructions to send the big one to visit.

NT it was good to see you buddy! When you told me you thought you'd like surf fishing I had no idea you'd go at it with the intensity you have. Good luck and looking forward to hearing how well you like that new Luna!

Arthur,

Actually I was worried when I took this pic that you were looking out over the water wondering why this new recruit can't acquire the target I've instructed him to apprehend.

There is no reason to be dissapointed because I've always cherished my time with Good Friends and this morning on the water was just another of those very good memories I will have to reminisce on for a long time........The day was nothing short of a success and there was no thought of failure.

I appreciate all your coaching and encouragement and I'm especially happy that you and a lot of my SWAT and FNN Friends are enjoying following this post. I will be celebrating the day it happens and I'll also enjoy the contents of my "Mission Complete" SWAT package!:Thumbs Up:

I still have to laugh about our last few casts in your honey hole when Poseidon decided we had better clear out. I remember thinking to myself just "one more cast " then seeing one of the biggest waves forming right in front of us and then looking over at you. When I saw you back out as fast as you did I figured I had better clear out too. Only problem was that as I retreated I found only deeper water! My only choice was to head back out and take what was coming.
Well after taking the wrath of that wave then looking back at you laughing just made it all that much more fun.

Thanks again Buddy!

5150,

Thank you for following the report and your encouragement!

I agree, I do feel blessed with the Friends I've made on this board and I do truly appreciate their support and commitment. I'll enjoy every trip out in my effort to get the legal halibut no matter how long it takes. If its trip no. 57 that will make it all that much sweeter!:Thumbs Up:

Pontoon,

Your relentless determination and enthusaism is inspiring. The first one can often be the hardest to catch but once it has been accomplished there will be many to come. Some will come easy while others will be hard earned. The sweetest rewards are often the result of the hardest efforts.. At times the key to getting bit is to NEVER QUIT. You can do it Pontoon..

When you hit the beach I'm picturing the theme song from Rocky playing in backround.

Sorry man the Daiwa Pluton that I am using in this effort was given to me by Dana "Fisherman 57" Rea before he passed away and his comment to me was that he wanted to see a legal halibut caught with it............Although he will not be there to personally witness it when and if it happens I would like to fulfill My friends wish.

09-11-2011, 12:42 PM
As soon as I got home Friday night my focus was on the fishing planned for this weekend. Trolly and I are in the "King of the Cats" mode right now so I made sure my gear was ready and talked on the phone with Trolly about our game plan.
Once that was set my focus went back to the mission I have made a priority to complete........... Catch a Legal Halibut and have the honor of being welcomed into the SWAT Brotherhood.

Having fished with Arthur and some of the other SWAT Team I learned quick that once arriving at the days location I had be ready to hit the water. With this in mind I set out my gear ready to suit up and had everything I needed packed and ready to go.

The plan for the day was to make the short drive down to the local beach and hit it hard until around 9:00am. I had spoke to NT during the day at work and he agreed to meet me down on the beach to work the shoreline. Just as I was leaving the house I noticed that I missed a call from My Good Friend Bones telling me that he was planning to be in the area and wanting to know if I wanted to hook up. Heck yes!, I called Bones on the way and it was agreed that we would look for each other on the beach and join up.
Once I arrived at the parking area I wasn't too surprized to see that NT was already there and on the water.
I grabbed my gear and headed down to the beach. There wasn't much on my mind except making the best effort I could in the next three hours to complete the Quest. Once I caught sight of NT I decided that I wouldn't waste any time so I started casting and making my way toward where he was. It was just starting to get light about this time and there was a slight cloud cover but I just had a good feeling about the day.
It was on the fifth or sixth cast I felt that welcome tap and pull at the same time setting the hook. At first it felt like nothing big but soon proved to be a bit different than normal. This fish was giving me some pretty good head shakes and fought like it didn't want to be caught!
It was about this time I thought to myself "This might just be a good fish!" so I satyed patient and played it up to where I caught a glimps of the fish........Halibut!.....Oh man this is a nice one! Once I was able to get over that excitement I waited for the waves to give me a hand getting it on the sand and get a hand on the fish. I knew I had to get it measured and back into the water as soon as I could so I yelled over to NT and The look on his face was priceless!:Thumbs Up:

I asked NT if he would get a couple pictures for the record as I stretched the tape over the fish and I'll have to admit right now my mind was telling me maybe 24" but the tape read out 22" After a couple of double takes we concluded that this fish was just a little over the 22" mark but it was a Legal Halibut!:Envious: "Mission Accomplished!"

After a quick High Five I took the fish back to the water and watched as this beautiful fish swam off, looking real strong, to grow and maybe give another lucky fisherman as good of a day as I just had.:Thumbs Up:

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-09-10%20BC%20Surf%20with%20John/100_1641.jpg

It was a good feeling getting to have the thrill of accomplishing this goal. Although the fish was by no means a trophy it was the one I needed. It was also cool to have NT there to witness the catch and it was a good feeling to have a friend just as excited as if he caught it himself. Thanks John (NT) it was cool to have you as my wingman!

Once the excitement settled down NT and I decided to keep working the beac to see what else we could bring in. As we continued on we noticed some lightning and thunder south of us and not too long after we had some pretty heavy rain. As we fished I kept a lookout for Bones but never saw him and I started to wonder if maybe we got our signals crossed but I later found out he and his fishing partner had to pull off the beach and regroup. Mike, I wish you could have been with us Buddy.

I fished up until the time I had to head out and get ready to chase wiskerfish with Trollmeister but NT, no surprize to me at all, stayed to cover some more beach.
NT, Thanks again for meeting up with me and I'm sure you're going to be reporting some more fine catches in the days to come!:Thumbs Up:

Arthur, I just want to thank you for extending this challenge to me on the day we chose to honor our Good Friend Dana "Fisherman 57" Rea. It was definitely a pleasure and an honor to earn my way into SWAT and I'm looking forward to getting to fish along side of you and the SWAT Team real soon! You have been a great help and I have appreciated all the encouragement you 've given me and most important.....your Friendship! Thank you My Friend.

I will now announce that this gift is now officially retired.........

It's always tough when a good thing ends and I have to say that I've enjoyed every minute fishing with Good Friends and posting these reports and I really have appreciated everyones comments and encouragement. As well as everyone who has followed the "Quest for a Legal Halibut"
Thanks everyone who has posted! And a special thanks to some of the SWAT members who texted or called with invitations to fish. Robert and Mike, Thanks guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

One last note.......I'm dedicating the "Quest for a Legal Halibut" post to Dana "Fisherman 57" Rea. Before Dana left us he gave me a reel and told me he wanted me to catch a halibut with it. I've not forgotten that gift and as a matter of fact it was with this reel I accomplished my goal.

Dana, Thanks Buddy. This ones for you!

Congrats on achieving you goal you set just 64 days ago on that day spent with a few of the "SWAT Crew" remembering "57". It might have seemed like an eternity to get here, but there were some fine days of fishing with friends as well as some nice quality fish caught in adverse conditions that will be remembered for a life time.

You and I have done a lot of fishing together and I appreciate your Friendship Now it's time to shift gears and concentrate on a couple of tournaments that mean a lot to both of us! I'll be in touch so we can start making out our game plan. Let's get team Trolltoon in focus.:Thumbs Up:

Terry,

Congrats on achieving you goal you set just 64 days ago on that day spent with a few of the "SWAT Crew" remembering "57". It might have seemed like an eternity to get here, but there were some fine days of fishing with friends as well as some nice quality fish caught in adverse conditions that will be remembered for a life time.

Your hard work and diligence at achieving your goal paid off! :Thumbs Up:

Although I am saddened that this tread will soon go away, I look forward to the next one with your new PB whatever from the surf!

Somehow I had a felling we would see you proudly wearing the gifts from the Commander in this post. You look very intimidating buddy!

Good luck out there on the kitty hunting with Trolly!

Steve http://planetsmilies.net/person-smiley-1122.gif

Steve, I've got to give you a very special thanks for your encouragement along the way. It meant a lot My Friend!
Although I wasn't able to seal the deal on your predicted day in the surf it gave me a lot of drive to keep going with the effort. I've had the pleasure to fish with several great people and friends along the way but now I have a great deal of respect for all of you on the SWAT Team and I'm looking forward to meeting up with you and the rest of the SWAT Brotherhood!
Your support and encouragement meant a lot to me along the way. Thank You again Steve!:Thumbs Up:

Hey Terry Congrats on a your first legal and welcome to S.W.A.T bud you truely deserved it.

Jonathan, Thank you very much for the warm welcome and I appreciate your reply and following the posts!
As I've mentioned earlier I've heard a great deal of good things about the SWAT members from the commander and I'm looking forward to meeting up with you and all the SWAT Team.:Thumbs Up:

congrats! I've been following this story for awhile now, I've always loved reading your reports, it's good to know you finally landed that legal halibut, It kind of inspired me to do a search of my own, patience and perseverance surely paid off, you surely earned the rewards. :Thumbs Up:

Jeremy, I want to Thank you for following the posts and I appreciate the kind words!
Whenever anyone asks me about suggestions for catching catfish I've always replied that patience and persistence were two big keys and in this endeavor it was true.
It makes me feel good to hear that this series of post has inspired you to go after a legal halibut of your own and I wish you all the luck in the world!:Thumbs Up:

Thanks again and good luck to you!

Doing my weekly check in with FNN and a big smile came to my face when I saw the new title of your report. :Big Grin:
Welcome to the Brotherhood Terry, couldn't happen to a nicer guy. :Thumbs Up:

Somewhere Dana is smiling too, and proud!

Heck, why retire that custom LC? The Commander would probably want you to put it back into action and get a new PB.

Phuong, I know you are a close Friend with Arthur and he has spoken very highly of you to me in the past. That means a lot! With that said I must say that I appreciate that you enjoyed the Quest posts as well as your encouragement along the way. Thank You very much!

I'm sure Danas was very happy to see my first legal halibut and I'll bet the thunder and lightning that day had to be applause from My Friend watching the goal completed.
As for retiring the lure I've just got to keep it retired just for the special meaning that it came from My Friend and it did the job it was meant to do.

I'm looking forward to having the honor of meeting up with you and hopefully we'll be able to hit the surf sometime in the near future.:Thumbs Up:

Thanks again!

Congratulations Terry!!!
We all knew this day would come.............................................. ..Eventually:Big Grin:
I am going to miss this thread but look forward to the many others that will come in the future.

Bob, I'm going to tell you right now your reply means a lot to me My friend! Thank You!

I'm not going to forget the days I've spent with you trolling DVL during some pretty hot bites and some pretty darn bad weather. No matter what the conditions you always seemed to teach me a trick or two. Nor will I soon forget the trips on the Salmenoid Phenom with you and Trolly. Man that was always a laugh a minute with to of my best Friends.

Yes, there is one more goal I'd like to achieve and the day is coming closer. I wouls definitely like to wear the crown someday and I'll be working to make it happen. No matter if I make it happen or if Trolly does a repeat I'll feel like that mission was accomplished.

Thanks for your support and Friendship Buddy!:Thumbs Up:

Congrats on a great catch Pontoon!

JPETERMAN, Thank you very much for your reply and for following the post.

CPT. Kirk, Thank you for your reply and I appreciate reading you enjoyed reading the reports.
If you love to fish you've got to give the surf a try. I'm sure you're going to like it as much as I do.:Thumbs Up:Thanks again and good luck to you!

"WAY TO GO" Pontoon!
First of all....
Congratulations on your first legal! You knew that you could do it and so you did! You do have Perseverance! You really hung in there! WTG!!
I followed your on going saga, and by reading your tread and I knew that you had really put your soul out there for this first legal. You really did! I could read it in your words. You deserved this honor! Congrats!
Also as important, congratulations on your entry into the famed S.W.A.T brotherhood! You and I have never met but I have met other members of the S.W.A.T brotherhood and I can tell that you are already held quite highly by them. And that's good enough for me!
I hope that some day I be fortunate enough to fish along side "Pontoon" a S.W.A.T brother.

SP Dan <"))><

SP Dan, I want to thank you for your kind words and congratulations!

When I took this challenge on I told myself I wasn't going to give up and I knew that with the support and encouragement from all those who replied and the help from some of my new SWAT Freinds it was going to happen. It was just going to take some time and dedication. It was definitely a proud moment to get to look into the package Arthur gave me for after the "Mission Accomplished" post and definitely a more proud moment when Arthur officially welcomed me as a SWAT Member.

Although you and I havent met I've got a feeling that we may just have that opportunity sometime real soon. I had a brief conversation with the Commander and he spoke very highly of you. I've got the feeling he's got his eyes on another possible recruit.

Thanks again and I hope to meet you sometime soon.

John, Thank you for the welcome into the SWAT Brotherhood!

I have to agree, getting that fish so quickly did feel like it was meant to be and I'll admit it was definitely a relief to get the job done before any doubts crossed my mind.

Once again thank You and I'll say it again.....It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to fish with you and I too am looking forward to fishing with you and the SWAT Team again sometime soon.:Thumbs Up:

Sorry for the delayed reply Terry... almost missed my flight trying to get outa Dodge last night.

Frank was right, we got back to the cars after finishing up our morning surf session and I checked my Blackberry for messages...
I had several messages, but I noticed yours about 3 or 4 lines down and skipped immediately to it. I threw my fist in the air and yelled, YES! He did it! The rest of the Team came over and I shared with them the good news. Plenty of high fives... :Big Grin:

I'm proud of you my friend. The way you accepted the mission and carried it out with such conviction was nothing short of inspiring. Your "attitude" more than anything, is what impresses me the most. :Thumbs Up:

Welcome to the S.W.A.T. Family... this is where you belong.

LOVE this pic... the S.W.A.T. "Enforcer"

Arthur,

I saved this last reply for you My Friend. On a couple of my solo surf sessions I've had some time to relect on a lot of experiences I've had here on FNN as well as think about the many friends I've made along the way. You and I were both blessed to have been close to the Godfather of Team 57, Dana "Fisherman 57" Rea and I think back to the day Dana introduced me to you at the very first Legends event. Dana told me then that you were one of "The Good Guys" and it didn't take me long at all to confirm how Dana felt about you.
I have come to find out that you are definitely a man of your word and you treat your Friends with nothing but respect. I am proud to call you My Friend:Cool:

I will never forget the day you gave me the challenge to become a part of the SWAT Brotherhood and sent me on a mission to catch, photograph and release my first legal halibut. Being that it was a day we agreed to share with a few of the SWAT members in Honor of Dana I knew right off I wasn't going to stop until the mission was complete. It was going to get done!

I appreciate all the support you gave me along the way, the custom ammunition to do the job and the willingness to invite me along on some solo sessions just because you wanted to be there when it happened. I also appreciate you waiting for me on a couple of those climbs up the hill heading back to the cars!

Although you were not there when I finally completed the job I just knew you'd be celebrating with me as soon as you got the text. I only wish I could have been there to see your reaction!

Well the mission has been completed and officially documented and I'm now going to set my focus on the new special op you mentioned in your text. I'll be reporting for duty soon My Friend.:Thumbs Up:

Thanks Again Arthur.

Pontoon, much props for sticking with the challenge and completing your goal. I don't think any of us ever doubted that the mission wouldn't be accomplished under any circumstances. As a matter of fact, we envy you for getting a challenge from the Commander. So few ever get the opportunity to join the elite. He only extend such offers to those he likes. Maybe that's why I haven't received such a challenge yet. jk
Fishing with SWAT is a privilege, I recently had the honor of joining Arthur and a few team members in the surf, good times. :Big Grin:

It was an honor to have been asked by arthur to take on this challenge to become part of SWAT because of the fact that I know how much this Brootherhood means to him.
I remember a few post with you fishing along with some of the SWAT members. Stay positive, keep fishing and posting reports. They are a pleasure to read.

Terry....
When I got that call from you I was a little distressed due to the downpour that almost hydroplaned Bam Bam and I off of PCH but my heart took a quick turn to hear the excitement in your voice with the confirmed "Legal"
on the sand. I know that feeling very well because it took me nearly a year to accomplish what you have in just a few months. A job well done my friend!
I must say the Saga of the multipart Quest for a legal and SWAT induction is by far one of the best reads I've ever had the pleasure of on this board. Your one class act and a very dedicated fisherman whether it's on a catfish adventure with Trolly or on the sand with John.
Dana would be very proud of you!
Of course I am very proud of you as well.
Talk to you soon my friend.....Can't wait to share the sand and stories....and hopefully a few legals with you!

P.S.

That "T" pic is cool....You definately "Got SWAT"

Mike, Thank you very much for the kind words and I'll tell you now you played a big role in this endeavor with the tips and information you gave me along the way as well as the privelege of getting to share the surf.

As the morning progressed I would look up ap and down the beach for you but never saw you. I thought to myself a few times that maybe I got my signals crossed with you but as it turned out we weren't to far away. The weather wasn't at all what I expected but as it turned out it didn't stop me from making the effort.
The phone conversation was great! I told you that I finally got it and there was a moment of silence and the a tone of excitement as if you were actually there!

Terry,
You've done it man! Great job! You're now officially a member of a cadre of surf fishermen that many hope to join, but you were always a member in spirit. That first legal is always one you remember vividly, and especially so since it marks a double milestone. While we've never met, I am sure that will change soon, and I look forward to fishing with ya!
