Got to the Observatory about 5:30am and ran into Jo ready to launch. We caught up for a minute and then fished together working the rocks for bass until about 9:30. Even with the high water the weeds were pretty thick.
Jo landed 6 or 7 (I lost count) - I think Senko's and skill were the ticket. Most of his were good sized smallies and he also picked up a few babies. I eventually landed 2 working one of the spots right up against the Observatory building where he got a few.
On his way back Jo picked up at least one crappie (maybe more). I worked the open waters for a while and picked up a small 13" trout on a crappie jig. I relocated to the far west end. Had a few hard trout hits on the fly, but didn't land any. The crappie that used to swarm around Garstin Island seem to be gone this year. Got off the water about noon.
Sunday back at it early, this time in Boulder Bay. I hit something big and slow while working away from the launch. It cruised for a bit pulling hard, but I must have snagged a carp on the side since it let go after a bit of sitting on the bottom. Worked up the east side of Boulder Bay all the way to the opening to the lake and back. Nada. Weeds were thick farther out that I'd ever seen them. The only open water was far toward the middle until I got closer to the mouth where it was finally less weedy closer to shore. Moved to the big rocks on the south/east corner. Surprisingly the weeds weren't bad near the rocks - I'm wondering if they mowed the forebay area of Boulder Bay since it wasn't nearly as weedy as other parts. I had a huge hit on the fly when working for crappie in the weeds (either a big crappie or maybe a bass). Didn't want to lose it, so worked it for a few minutes. He ended going deep into weeds and getting all tied up. I finally broke it lose :(
Picked up a few very small young bass on the rocks on a roboworm while hoping for some bigger bass. Gave up and moved to the west end again for trout. I let the wind drift me down the north side of the lake all the way to the SS Relief.
Along the way I met Carl (Hey Carl!) I think he said his FNN handle is Fishin Magician (but not sure). Carl and his buddy were picking up trout from a kayak on garlic. They said all were caught high in the water. I shortened my cast to stay higher, and on the 4th or 5th I finally landed a nice 12". Picked up another a while later. Got off the water at noon.
Lots more boats out today - another beautiful weekend.
Cheers!!
Eric
