I’m going to make this a quick report. We headed over to Catalina Island with 16 anglers. The conditions were less than ideal but we made a day out of it. We had some fair calico bass fishing in the morning on fresh dead squid. The ticket was a quarter ounce sliding egg sinker. My friend Jon got a couple nice bass on plastic (that I rigged up for him) before we dropped anchor on the first spot. Later on we fished a spot where we picked up some nice shallow water rockfish, including some of the biggest treefish I have ever seen! To finish off the day we caught some more calicos and had a few break-offs on barracuda. The calico fishing has great potential but the water needs to warm up and the conditions need to get back to normal – then fishing will be really great!

I tried plastic but I couldn’t get bit on my ol’ reliable rainbow trout-colored zoom, so I went to the Gulp jerk shad, and I caught a couple nice calicos as well as a few shorts. Catching those treefish sure was cool, last time I’ve seen them as big (maybe I’ve seen them bigger) was a few years ago when they were out of season. My dad and I caught some on the smoke sparkle plastic grubs with squid.

Hi Jackpot Jimmy,

I'm hoping the Tradition follows it's pattern as last year and makes the trek to Catalina often. With loads the largest on the weekend, I'm guessing most of the CAT trips will be a possible fri-sat-sun deal ..... oh well..... boat does well on the local spots too ! See the new Zoom California 420 color on their Jr's. That color combo is .... as shown in my report pretty much the same !! Don't figure the salt impregnation has much effect on our salty fishys !! ha ha

thanks,

JapanRon

Actually Catalina was slow for us last year the few times that we went, and PV bassing was much better June-July and sand bass in the bay Auguest-September. The year before Catalina was very good for us with plenty of calicos and bonito biting well into the fall.

Pretty cool Jimmy, looks like a great day of fishing, nice pics of those Calis, By the way believe or not, theres some big treefish like those on the shoe now too,got a couple friday and was surprised also at the size, maybe the rockfish closure is letting them grow,I know its helped the reds for sure, thanks for the report!
