Mackerel and large sardines attacked the pier both days around 6 PM. The bites are everywhere, from the end of the pier to almost the beginning of the pier where the water is just knee high.
I got a 5 gallon size bucket full in less than an hour. Just use sabiki or hooks with feather, no bait needed.
Passed by Newport on the way home and that pier was packed with anglers. I assume there are more fish and more people and a lot more tangling.
