View Full Version : A Day with SWAT in the O.C. Surf in Honor of Dana "Fisherman 57 " Rea. 7/8/11

One year ago to the day FNN and Team 57 lost a Dear Friend and this post is dedicated to a man that so many of us were proud to call our Friend. He touched so many of us with his warm smile, generosity and love for the sport of fishing. Especially surf fishing. He truly lived for the Team 57 Mission statement: Family, Friends, Fun and Fishing.
One year ago many of us gathered at Arthur's home after we said our final goodbye to Dana to talk about the good times at the past events Dana poured his soul into making better every time we gathered. It was a time for Friends and Family.
It was also this day that I had a long talk with another Dear Friend of mine Arthur. It was Dana who introduced us at the first Legends event and through time we became friends and shared a common respect for each other. Before parting that day Arthur and I agreed to set aside a day to do a solo surf fishing trip and dedicate it to Dana.
Well, for some reason or another we just hadn't been able to set a date. Arthur and I finally decide to get it done and agreed on today’s date. On Wednesday Arthur called me and told me that he had just realized that today was the anniversary of Dana's passing. I didn't know what to think of this but I do feel that there was a reason for this to happen.
As the time grew closer I had an invitation from one of the SWAT members to fish with him and Arthur also had calls from a couple other SWAT members to share the day in memory of Dana.
It didn't take any thought at all for the two of us to make the decision to postpone our day and share it with the guys. After all Dana would never exclude anyone.

Today was also a special day because Arthur inducted another very special member to the SWAT Team. Arthur will be reporting on this special induction in his reply. It is a membership I know that this member would be very proud of.

Dana, we miss you Buddy and this report from the O.C. is for you..................and our prayers go out in your honor.

It was decided that we were all going to rendezvous at 5:00 am and I knew right off that if I was going to have any chance of fitting in with the SWAT Commander and his elite surf fishing members I had better not start the day off on a bad note so I set my alarm for 3:00am and headed south.
I arrived just as Arthur pulled in to set up base for our first session in the surf. shortly after SWAT members Robert - Murrietta Angler, John - Klocked and Justin - Justin Oceanside arrived. It didn't take long for me to confirm that the guys were elite when they were geard up before I could tie on a lure. I knew I had better step it up when Arthur grabbed my rod to tie on my chosen Lucky craft for the day. More on that later.......
We all made it down to the water and Arthur calls out to me and says for me to take the lead but I insisted that the SWAT Team go ahead so I could follow and go to school on their skills. So Arthur and the guys took the lead and it was Justin who scored first with a WSB. The first I had ever seen caught from the surf.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/004-26.jpg

Then it was Robert who kicked it into gear with a 21-1/2" short halibut that looked pretty good to me about this time but you can see the dissapointment in Roberts face......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/006-23.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/010-17.jpg

Looking down the beach I see John hooked up. I don't have a pic of johns fish but I knew that after seeing John hooked up and then looking over at Arthur and seeing him hooked up I had better kick it into high gear. So, I did what any desperate SWAT wannabe would do, I took Robert's advice and jumped ahead of line to fish where no one has casted yet.
After a few casts I hook up but it didn't feel too big and it was confirmed as I reeled in a little bity ray. Well, I tell myself at least the skunk is off so let's get this little guy off the hook and get back to work.
Note to self: don't grab a ray with your bare hands. A ray no matter how small will still inflict pain! Sorry no pics.

It was about this time Arthur walks up to me and says, "so you want to be a SWAT member huh? I'll tell you what you get a legal halibut and your in." Oh I see I have to earn my way in ole buddy. I'll show you!
After a few casts and just as Arthur turns to make a cast I hook up and it feels good and it's taking line! Arthur turns to see what was going on and I see the excitement in his eyes as he yells "stop that thing. Turn it around" Then my worst nightmare.........SNAP! Lost something nice right in front of the Commander. :Embarrassed:
Note to self: Check your drag dummy! Oh and remember in some past posts where it was becoming legend that if Arthur touched your rod you were sure to bring in a legal something......I guess I shot holes in that one!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/011-18.jpg

After a stern lecture from the Commander I went back to tie on another Lucky Craft and before I could decide on which pattern to use I look up and see Arthur on and he brings a short Halibut to the sand.......I think he did it just to rub it in a little......

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/014-15.jpg

Just as it was time to roll up and hit area two I get lucky and at least get a short halibut of my own......uh more like really short...........

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/017-11.jpg

Arthur called out to us that it was time to hit spot number two so we headed for the cars where Arthur tells everyone to follow him it's not far. So, it was off to the next area. We all fall in line behind arthur and jump on the fwy. Then we get off the fwy and then back on the fwy and then back off the fwy. Then back over the fwy and then back on the fwy in the other direction. It was at this time I now had lost my sense of direction and didn't know where the heck we were. Then it hit me. This was what SWAT does to wannabes to keep them from being able to find their way back to fish the SWAT areas on their own! Oh, and Arthur even had the nerve to call me on the phone to apologize for taking the wrong onramp!

After a short stop at area 2 Arthur decided this spot was not going to pan out and it was time to head to the elusive area 3. At this point I was thankful we at least stopped to take a group photo. Heck, I hadn't even caught my breath.
It was cool too........The Commander let me in on the group photo with the SWAT Team!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/018-12.jpg

Once again we headed of following behind Arthur to Area 3 where I hear Robert has done some damage on the legal halibut in the past. Well, I couldn't wait to get to this spot. Man I was feeling that legal halibut. It was mine baby!
Then we got to the edge of the hill and I look down to the beach. "We're going to hike down there!" "You guys know we've got to climb out of here when we're done!.......don't you SWAT guys own a helicopter!"
After my initial shock of the elevation change I told myself I wasn't going to let Arthur down and off we went.....

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/021-9.jpg

Well, Area 3 didn't dissapoint.........Robert started this session off with a WSB and the only legal halibut of the day.....

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/028-9.jpg

I even got int the mix with another.......well another really short halibut

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0184.jpg

As they day went on I realized that I just didn't have the stamina these SWAT guys have and the thought of having to climb a mountain just under the size of Everest I figured would start my way back to the trail head so I could get a little head start in front of the guys. On my way back I did bring in my first leo and my first corbina on a lure. Small but they counted......I think robert has the picture of the corbina.

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0192.jpg

I worked my way back to the trailhead and decided to make a few casts before heading up the hill. I'm glad I did because I got another first, a WSB and another, well yes, really short halibut.....

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0194.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0193.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0195.jpg

I saw the guys heading back toward the trailhead so I decided I had better take advantage of the head start and I started the climb. It was a little strenuos but I did it and had no regret whatsoever. I may not have made Arthurs challenge of becoming Official SWAT with a legal halibut but Damn I had a great day with some truly great guys in honor of a truly Great Friend in Dana "Fisherman 57 Rea"

John, I may not have had the chance to get pics of all your fish but It was a pleasure to meet you and I see where the guys have a lot of respect for you as you can see in the picture. None of dared to mess with you....

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm200/TeamTrolltoon/11-07-08%20-%20SWAT/IMG_0187.jpg

Justin, it was a pleasure meeting you as well and congrat on the first WSB of the day.

Robert, It was good to see you again and I hope to get to fish with you guys again real soon. I have to say I watched you fish and you mean business buddy!

Arthur, This turned out to be an awesome trip. You have become a great Friend and I'm proud to call you one. I guess we'll have to make another date to get together and go after my legal halibut. I'm not giving up.
I'll be in touch with you soon!

Dana, We miss you Buddy!

Beautiful report Terry. :Thumbs Up:
I remember a year ago, you and I were standing outside the C.C.U. after we had just gone in to see Dana. We didn't know it then, but that would be the last time that we would ever see him again... I remember telling you that the first thing that we're going to do when Dana recovers, is that you & I will both drag him out to the surf, just the three of us. How I wish we could have just one more day fishing with him...

Friday was a very special day for me. To fulfill our agreement to hit the surf together in Dana's memory and to have some of my S.W.A.T. Brothers come along really helped to make the day more bearable.

Terry, thank you for being there with me. You are a modeled husband, a great father and an exemplary friend.

Robert, John and Justin... thanks for sharing our special day.
None of us, is as strong, as all of us.

On Friday, Dana Rea - Fisherman 57 was Posthumously Inducted into the S.W.A.T. brotherhood. :Big Grin:

We had such a fun day in the surf yesterday. Talking, reminiscing and telling stories about Dana, enjoying each other's company and catching lots of fish too. I will remember this day for a very long time.

Here's part of our fun day, as seen through the eyes of my camera...

What a beautiful day.

We had a pretty good day in the surf. NINE species day! I don't think I've ever been a part of a nine species day before.

Terry (Pontoon), congrats on your multi-species and multi-personal bests day! :Envious:
Very impressive performance, except for that one glitch... lol

BTW, Sting Rays are NOT to be handled with your bare hands. :EyePop: Hope the swelling went down.

Get yourself a legal Halibut, anytime... anywhere and you will. be S.W.A.T. certified! :Big Grin:

Now, for the fish story of the day...

I was working the surf right next to Terry when I saw his rod dipped violently. The fish hammered his LC and took off running at a high rate of speed. I watched as the fish peeled off half of his spool in a matter of 10 seconds. This was his Pluton 200SH spooled with 185 yards of #12 line. :EyePop: He was running to the right with the fish and the beast showed no sign of slowing down. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything to Terry, because I wasn't the one fighting the fish, but I yelled to him. "You only have 1/4 of your spool left... if you don't buckle down and turn him now, you're gonna lose him!" Terry proceeded to button down his drag and the fish instantly snapped him off. Terry, I meant apply more pressure to your drag and high stick your rod to create more resistance, NOT to button down your drag buddy.

We both stood there bewildered for a minute. There was less than 1/4 of line left in his spool. I could see the black bar of the spool showing thru what's left of his mono. Terry, I wholeheartedly apologize for interfering while you were doing battle with that fish. I had no place doing that. That was a serious freight train and I'm not even sure if anybody could have turned it. Too fast to be a Halibut, Shark or Ray. We will never know what it is, but I'm pretty sure that it was a big White Sea Bass. Why do I think so? Because they are known to have that first initial burst of power & speed. Plus, we caught 4 of them that day, so it's a good bet that a monster was running with the pack. Live & learn... you will be better prepared next time, and yes, there WILL be a next time.

Terry, thanks again for joining me on a wonderful day in honoring our friend. :Big Grin:
You're one of the "Good Guys" and I'm looking forward to the day that you put that legal Halibut on the sand and join the Team.

I can only hope that I will be remembered in the same way when my time comes. Terry sorry to hear you lost a big fish..Talk about a tough break. You'll get that big fish next time. Looks like the sea bass are making a strong presence in the surf. If this is any indication of things to come in the fall it's going to be really good. Looking forward to fishing with you guys soon. Until then keep up the good work...

Hey Terry,
Great report Bro...:Big Grin:
I think it was a great way to remember Dana and he was definately smiling down on us!!!
It was a very nice day fishing, not way off, but very pleasant with multiple species.
The list was as follows;

1) WSB ( 4 for the day & Pontoons 1st From Surf )
2) BSP ( Biggest at 13" )
3) Sand Bass ( Dink )
4) Smooth Hound Shark ( My PB @ 40" )
5) Halibut ( 1 Keeper )
6) Butterfly Ray ( OUCH!!! )
7) Leopard Sharks ( Pontoons 1st From Surf w/LC )
8) Corbina ( Pontoons 1st From Surf w/ LC )
9) Yellow Fin Croaker ( OK!-OK! )

Now that I see the list, I guess it was a pretty nice day, but nothing compared to the company of my friends...:Big Grin:
I always enjoy the time on the water, even more so with the good humored ribbing going on.
I am looking forward to our next outing and I hope I am there to see you get that legal Halibut...

Have A Great Weekend,
Robert

That was a really good post Terry! I think you should do all of em from now on it was so good. Just kiddin bro. So now you've hung with the SWAT brothas, we see, we conquer, we kiss and tell. And the fish that get away always are remembered longer then the ones you catch, so cherish a good fish story for the grandkids when you get to be old. Arthur got a nice one with me today, and will post up when he gets back to his hood.

Very, very great day out there guys, and a perfect way to honor Dana's memory! He was watching over you guys without a doubt. 4 WSB is a great count from the surf, even if they are short, and a 9 species day on LCs is incredible. Glad you had a good day out there Pontoon! That first WSB is awesome and it's legal friend along with a legal flatty are in your future! Sorry about the lost fish, but that's what keeps you coming back for more.

What a great report and way to remember the big guy Terry. For some reason I wasn't made aware of this gathering until the last minute and when I finally got an invite...... I had already finalized plans with another friend that I've been introducing to the surf.
I didn't want to change things up on Bill at the last moment so I told Arthur that I would be with you guys in spirit and say a prayer for all of you to be strong, safe and prosperous in memory of Dana. I proudly did so at greylight as soon as my feet hit the sand.
Congrats on your outing with the SWAT team Mr. Pontoon. I'm going to be fishing more down south so I will give you a heads up the next time I head that way. That big old legal is just on the horizon my friend but all in all....You did very well and Dana would be proud of you!
Keep up the good work!

Arthur (Wingnut)

Arthur,

I remember that day outside the CCU and the hope we shared that we were going to pick Dana up and have our day surf fishing with him. Although we were not able to fulfill that promise we were able to fulfill the promise we made the day we said our last goodbyes to our Friend and I know he was with us the entire day.
Even after Dana left us he didn't stop giving. You and I, through his friendship, became close friends ourselves and I think through our respect for what is good will remain friends for a long time.
I am so glad that I was able to spend this day honoring our friend with you and some of the SWAT members. It was a day I will not forget.

Thank you My Friend and as far as that offer to become SWATed, I'll be after that legal halibut every chance I get. No matter how many spools of line or LC's I have to donate that legal hali is mine!

Oh and by the way, this is pretty cool.............we still need to do that solo trip My Friend. :Envious:

CAPT'N,

I'm sure Dana was smiling and laughing at the same time. I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

loveofish,

Thank you for the reply and it was definitely a blast to get my first WSB.

Nice work gents. Love the shot of the WSB on the salad, way to protect the fish from the sand for pics.

bassmiester,

Thank you for the reply. I have to say it was just as good a feeling to see all the WSB swim away in good shape.

JerryG

jerryG,

I'm sure Dana was pleased with us being in the surf to honor him. I'm not going to sweat losing a big fish. After all that loss will just keep me coming back to the surf and It will be a great day when I can bring that first legal to the sand.
I hope your right about the fishing getting better in the fall and I hope to get to fish with more of SWAT real soon.

Thanks for such a thorough report, Pontoon...I know what you mean about trying to keep up with the troops on the hike out...I don't try to get a head start any more since it's really embarrassing when they still pass me up...
Cheers,
Sid

sidified,

I'm glad you enjoyed the report. It was definitely a blast to write.

When i took a look over that hill down to the surf it wasn't the walk down that went through my mind first. It was the walk back up that had a feeling of terror running through my bones......next time there will be no fear. I made it once and I'll make it again.

Way to go guys ,,,,hats off to all the dans in our lives ..a true feigned is more precious than gold ..as I'm reading this I'm waiting for my bro ..for our 5:00 excursion ..recon seal beach..wish me luck

Thanks for the added pics!

Hey Terry,
Great report Bro...:Big Grin:
I think it was a great way to remember Dana and he was definately smiling down on us!!!
It was a very nice day fishing, not way off, but very pleasant with multiple species.
The list was as follows;

I'm gald that we finally had the chance to fish together and it was cool to get to do it in honor of Dana.
I have to say that you to too hit the surf with some intensity. There was one point I was amazed at how deep you were. I looked away and then looked back and you weren't there. I thought to myself OH @%&$! where's robert? Then as the wave passed there you were fishing away like it was no big deal. You deserved that legal halibut buddy! :Thumbs Up:

I hope to have the chance to fish with you again real soon.

nice haul!

i'll be heading down to HB & Newport sunday to meet up with a buddy & hit the surf.

i've been really wanting to throw some LCs & try to learn how they work.

It's pretty rare that you and i aren't chasing the cats but this was definitely a lot more strenuous! :Envious:
I'm glad you enjoyed the break reports! I guess it was just a warm up for the all nighter at DVL. :Thumbs Up:

Really great report. SWAT proves once again that they are a great group and class act.

Good job guys!

HarbourAnglr,

Thank you! I agree, the SWAT Team is definitely a class act!

Mikey,

I'm glad you liked the post and it was definitely fun to write!

As far as losing fish goes I've got plenty of those stories to tell It definitely will keep me coming back but there is one thing for sure getting to fish with good friends will definitely bring me back.

I saw both of your reports and they are awesome! Both of those trips had to be about as fun as it gets. Great job out there!:Thumbs Up:

Very, very great day out there guys, and a perfect way to honor Dana's memory! He was watching over you guys without a doubt. 4 WSB is a great count from the surf, even if they are short, and a 9 species day on LCs is incredible. Glad you had a good day out there Pontoon! That first WSB is awesome and it's legal friend along with a legal flatty are in your future! Sorry about the lost fish, but that's what keeps you coming back for more.

bsp,

Thank you! I'm sure Dana was there watching over us that day.

I was real happy to bring in my first WSB and I'll definitely make it a goal to post up a legal one of each species.

Great job out there guys, now that is a bagful of different species.
WSB were biting like crazy eh? something tells me another attack here is just around the corner :Secret:

Whats with the funky hali? looks like a seal took a bite and couldnt hang on, lucky for him.

Love the prayer shot guys, way to show your respect.

Pontoon, dont worry about walking the hillside, some of them are a little rough. Sometimes its better to grab the helicopter and just fly up

iLLest,

Thank you for the reply!

All morning I heard helicopters along the beach and the thought crossed my mind several times how nice it would have been to hop a ride. I will admit that the climb back up to the trucks wasn't as bad as I expected. It was a cool sight to look down at the SWAT guys working the beach the way they do. I'll be going back and that little hill isn't going to intimidate me a bit.

This is my favorite photo of the report, made me a little choked up thinking about what ran through your minds at that exact moment. Well done SWAT brothers, well done.

This all fell together pretty fast but it was cool to hear that all of us no matter where we were fishing in Dana's honor. Any time you are planning to come down south I'd appreciate the chance to fish with you again. After all, you and Arthur were the first SWAT members to take me and Trolly through a light boot camp mission. I still have that LC you gave me too! :Thumbs Up:

I wasn't officially inducted into SWAT Friday. Arthur told me he had to witness a legal hali or have definite proof of bringing one to the beach. You can rest assured it is one goal I'm going to be working hard to achieve.

I hope to hear from you soon and tight lines Buddy!

I'm also glad you spent the day with us in honor of Dana. Dana had a very profound impact on me as a Friend and I will continue to miss the Man.
I have to tell you that when you brought your WSB in for the first fish of the day It just got me to fish harder to get one of my own.

Once again it was a pleasure meeting you and I hope to have the opportunity to fish you all again real soon.:Thumbs Up:
