Took the advice of some of you and fished at Balboa today with my two kids. No worries, we knew it's a cesspool of bacteria, but we also just wanted to catch something and release it anyway, so it was lots of fun. :) We caught 6 fish but they were all under 7 inches. didn't matter to my kids, they LOVED IT!
The fish were all small carp and two bass, all small. Everything was caught on carp bait (dough), pre-packaged stuff we picked up at Big 5. We caught them all off dropshot rigs.
Fun day. Off to Castaic next week to do some real fishing. :)
