Has anyone every used a cast net? The biger question is are they legal? There are a few places i was hoping to use one to cetch bait, just not sure if it is legal in california. :LOL:

They're very illegal. Not 100% sure about the Colorado River (different regs there), but you can't use them in all other CA waters fresh or salt.

While lots would like to use in SoCal waters to catch bait, it is definitely illegal to use. However, it may be legal to use in ocean waters north of Point Conception...may want to verify that one...there was a recent post in another site about the same thing...

Yep, N of Pt Conception is ok for surf smelt. You can use a umbrella net local. Off a pier chum up some smelt then yank the net up and catch them.

Sweet! Thanks guys i knew i could get a good answer quick around here. My buddy from Texas is itching to use his but im going to have to tell him to put it back in the garage. Anyone ever try to make their own umbrella net?
