It will be our 1st trip to LP and my son's 5th fishing trip. Will be shore fishing this time and would like to meet up with veterans of LP's BG hunters.

Any pointers on where to go and what color lures to use would be much appreciated. My experience is limited to Kansas reservoirs & farm ponds where worms and crappie jigs ruled.

Feel free to pm me for meet up and secret honey holes. :Big Grin: Will be heading out early tomorrow.

Thanks.

David

July 4 its going to be crowed big time. The line today for the Perris entrance was backed up far at 9:45am, that's when we where leaving. However, if you are going early morning (the park opens at 6 am) the line wont be long. The bite was good today from 6:00-9:30 for us.

If you get there early you will get to pick your spots but eventually will be boxed in by other fishermen. However, if you want to avoid the crowds you could go to the less known southern entrance. When we went there today at 6am there where only 5 other people there tubing. The lake is about a 10 min walk from the parking though and down some rocks to the water. I could go there tomorrow and show you I would love to get a second day of fishing in.

If you want to keep your son entertained and catch a lot of gills 4 to 6 inches mealworms where working good for us. (on a drop shot). You might get occasional big guy too! :)

I also like to use small lures like a Dardevle Skeeter and Yo-Zuri Snap Beans. Although you get less gills but there usually good sizes. Silver and gold lures seem to work best, basically anything shiny like a bait fish.

I'd just like to admit that am no veteran of gill fishing yet but I do learn from a few :) Heres a few pics from Today and Thurs. PM me with your info and any more ?'s - Anthony

Thanks Anthony. LOL My 11 year old son does not fool around(read my other post on Cahuilla), we will be there at 6AM cuz he will probably wake me at 4AM.

That said, would parking lot 11 & 12 be the choice for 6AM and on before it gets crowded and then move on to the south entrance (I am assuming that would be the Bernasconi Rd) say around 8:30AM or so.

Will pick up mealworms for my son and I guess I will try with my old crappie lures. It's been 12 years since I fished so all my stuff are probably outdated but heck I am going to try them out. It worked on the 18" LBM at Cahuilla.

Check for my PM.

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about the age of your stuff. I was out there this past Saturday and caught bg, crappie, and a couple smaller bass on tackle that is pushing 25 years old. I used a super duper then switched over to crappie jigs. I was on a float tube so I was able to get away from the crowds. The techniques that caught fish 12 or 25 years still work. Have fun

400 am is what i normally wake up for fishing trips. It just doesnt feel like fishing to me otherwise. Im normally at the lake no later than 700am. no matter what lake im going to. Perris is a little far for me though and i noticed you live in palm desert which is where ill be this weekend. Anyway never fished perris before but your gear should be fine.

Anthony - too bad you didn't have crickets. Did you enjoy the show? I know David and his son did.

Wowweeeee What a day. A Big Thank You and :UDaMan: to Sonny. He is truly the Master BG of Lake Perris but more on that later. Here's the single pic that I shot on my phone cam while on the boat because we were too busy catching BGs.

Here's Matt holding the Bag O Blue Gills. Noel on the left and Master BG Sonny on the right. He was so adamant about releasing the females (even though they were spawned out) that we ended up with this lighter bag that he barely managed to carry from the boat to halfway up the stairs.

Yep this is the kind of BGs that D1LedHed put Matt and I to. On top of that, he was very patient explaining and teaching my son how to use the ultralight rig with his special jig that he prepared for us. Heck I was pricking up my ears as my experience with ultralight is limited to ice fishing for crappie. It was a day of learning new tricks and techniques for Matt and I.

Sonny and Noel, Another BIG thank you from Matt and I .

Next time I will make sure to bring some :) I got my first gill with no crickets and my other two by tipped bees that landed on my tube. You guys where really working those gills, some where really nice monster sized. I was also geting hits on the way back by trolling the jig but the gill got off :( Thank you Sonny for the jigs, they are really nicely made.
It was nice meeting you David and your son, hope you guys come to Perris again someday.

Ditto. I've always enjoy meeting up with "fish n/or hunt" folks. Before the internet in the early 90s I met so many nice people through my job at a local sporting goods store in Kansas. After 12 years absence it is nice to know nothing's changed except it is so much easier to meet up with like minded folks through forums and boards.

Out here in the desert there are only 2 places to fish - Lake Cahuilla or Salton Sea. Whenever you guys are bored and would like to have a gurantee no skunk day I will be happy to take you guys to my honey hole in Salton Sea.

Yes!... I have faith in the human race. There still are some truly nice people out there and David, you and your son just met one of them. Sonny got several of us fishermen turned on to Bluegill and we can't thank him enough! Too cool d1LedHed. Nice fishing too by the way.

d1ledhed - What a great experience you gave them. Great fishing and better "fishermanship". Hope to see on the lake sometime.
