Fishing Tuesday 6-28-11, with Bill Fisher, on his 18’ Trophy. “Toad Hall”.

Having not fished for nearly three weeks, I just had to scratch my itch! Two weeks ago I went to Cancun on vacation, had a fantastic time, however, no time to go fishing, then of course returning to work I was buried all last week, so I made plans to fish with Lal on Saturday and Dave on Sunday. Well Lal’s wife had a medical emergency Friday night so Saturday was cancelled. Then on Saturday, Dave calls me and says his navigation system took a crash, so Sunday was cancelled, talk about being bummed? So I called Bill on Sunday and asked him if he was going fishing this week. Yep, he was, and I made plans to join him on Wednesday. On Monday I checked the weather reports, severe wind on Wednesday, so I called Bill and we moved the trip up to Tuesday.

I arrived at Bill’s quaint Trailer residence on a cliff overlooking the water, some 10 miles south of Rosarito at 6:45pm; we had a few beers, shot the ****, watched some baseball, and set the alarm for 4:15 am.

Woke up to only a slight breeze, and a deep marine layer. Just past grey light we arrived in Las Salinas, where Bill slips his boat. We exited the harbor around 5:15am, into calm seas, and little wind. We began making mackerel for bait a short distance from the harbor. We spent about an hour or more chasing diving bird schools, hoping to find White Seabass or some Yellowtail, which had been caught recently in the bay.

After casting iron on a number of large schools of bait, with no biters, we elected to head towards Salsapuedes into deep water targeting some tasty Reds! The first couple of reefs resulted in a few small Reds, some decent size Starries, and a few small Boccaccio’s. Last week Bill had a great time on catching big Reds in some structure in depths over 300’ deep, so we set a course there. On the way we ran over a great high spot, with lots of rocky structure, also over 300’ deep. I looked at the meter and commented on the lack of fish marks? Bill stated that sometimes the fish are hugging the bottom, resulting in few marks? So we both dropped down, and we both got hammered as soon as we hit bottom.

It was absolutely wide open for the next hour, catching huge Reds, Bocaccio, a number of Starries, Green Stripes, Bank Perch, and Copper Rockfish. We were limited out on Rockfish by 9am. Here are some pictures:

We moved into shallow water to fish for some Bass and possible Lingcod. We caught a half dozen Sand Bass to four pounds, released a few short Lingcod, a bunch of Chocolate Rockfish, more Starries and Green Stripes, and some Johnny Bass. Bill’s engine started acting up, so we called it a day at 11:30 am. No way to complain about a short day when we caught so many fish. Cleaned the fish near the harbor and returned to Bill’s place by 1pm.

Day’s Catch:

Bill and I took a nap for an hour, then he called the border and found out it was an 80 minute wait at San Yasidro. He suggested I go to Otay Mesa, which also had a recorded message of a 30-minute wait, wrong! It took me 51 minutes, and many of the other lines were much longer.

Bill, I had a blast, once again you helped me scratch my itch for fishing, too cool! Thanks so much for the invite, and fabulous hospitality. What a fun day on the big pond!

I fished with Bill on a 18' trophy. Definitely our first choice is Tails or ghosts, didn't happen in this area today! Tuna, soon, soon, I hope!
