Oceanside surf fishing help

Will be staying about 20 feet from the Beach about a mile south of the pier. Anyone surf fish in this area? We will be there from July 6 -11 with lots of Grand kids. Looks like flat bottom no structure when i checked it out a few weeks ago. We will also have a boat but plan on putting a couple of sticks in the sand to see if any thing may be there.
