After receiving intel about the Commander's south O.C. slay, Jason and I knew we had to put the information to good use. After a multitude of texts that night, we all finally convinced Wingnut to join us for an encore session. :Envious:

Got to the spot around 0515 to find Wingnut and Murrieta Angler (Robert) already fishing in the dark. :Rolls Eyes: As we were suiting up, Justin arrived on the scene, geared up, and was walking to the sand while I was still lacing up my boots. I think, "Darnit, they're all getting a head start!"

Conditions were similar to yesterday's although the surf was a bit rougher, water a little murkier, but with a lot less salad.

When we finally hit the sand, we find that Justin was already bringing something in. It looked like a big one even in the dark...

Damn, a Flat Fish of the WRONG kind, again!

Oops, sorry, looks like Wingnut cut off your head Justin.

I took a quick peek at what he caught then went straight into the water. :Envious:

First cast... bendo!

I knew I had a fish on cauz I felt it wiggling and jiggling but then it suddenly stopped. Line was still tight though...? Robert tells me it probably wedged itself in some rocks and gave me some pointers in how to work him out (thanks Robert!). Moments later I'm reeling him in. :Big Grin:

This Perch was the next fish caught... then Jason came up with one a short while after.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/010-13.jpg

It seemed like almost an hour where none of us even got a bite. Where were the rest of the fish?? And what happened to alllll the flatties from yesterday?

Finally, Jason hooks up with the first Flattie of the morning.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/024-8.jpg

A little side story...
Right after Arthur's legal onslaught, I think he feels bad for me because I hadn't hooked up in a while and hadn't hooked into any flatties. So he comes over while I'm fishing and places his hand on my rod. I said, "What was that for?" He said, "You'll see." Hmmm..... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/eh.gif

So back to fishing.

Jason hooks into another Short Hali.

Arthur and I thought it was a Legal Butt, Jason thought Bass, Robert thought Croaker... the suspense was killing us all.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a259/xotessox8/swat%20062311/DSC00532.jpg

Robert and Arthur both had the feeling that someone was going to catch a ghost today. When Arthur touched my rod before... he must've let me borrow some of his good karma... his fishing mojo. Thanks buddy, I needed it.

A couple more hookups to end the day.

Arthur tells Justin to stop making pancakes.

If you're wondering why there's an LC in Arthur's mouth, here's the story:
Shortly after his 3 casts, 3 fish, he loses his 130 metallic ayu flash minnow to some structure. He was disappointed but quickly shrugged it off with an "Oh well, it happens," and kept right on fishing.
Hours later, while we were working our way back, Jason sees something shiny in the sand. He walks over for a closer look and low and behold, it's a 130 metallic ayu flash minnow!

Wingnut giving thanks to Poseidon's Boss.

06-23-2011, 07:38 PM
First of all, I want to thank you guys for talking me into making the long drive back down to hit the surf again today. :Big Grin: I'm sure glad that I did! Even if we set all the great catches aside, it was still a funfilled morning. What a great session and like yesterday, we wrapped it all up around nine o'clock.

I was completely content to fish behind everybody today. I had a pretty decent session the previous morning, so I wanted the rest of you guys to have the same success.
I also wanted to try something I haven't tried before. Yesterday, I was constantly being harassed by short Flatties and Perch, So, I made up my mind that I was going to only throw the bigger LC 130MR today to see if it would weed out some of the smaller fish. The results was that I got a lot fewer strikes and caught fewer fish, BUT they were a BETTER grade of fish. :Big Grin: Hmmmmm, we may have something here...

Tess, it was fun bantering around with you in the surf this morning. You fish like a girl! :Big Smile: A little friendly competition brings out the best in us all. :Big Grin:
It was nice of you to let Jason get out to an early lead and then turn on the afterburners to catch him. Congrats on that good looking White Sea Bass, now go get a legal one! I know it's just a matter of time.

Jason, for the first time, you didn't let Tess fish ahead of you very much today. The funniest moment came when Tess crossed your line and was pulling on it... I watched as you did the phantom hookset and yelled fish on! The look on your face when you realized she crossed your line was priceless. Had me rolling in the surf laughing. Gotcha!
I guess we can call it a tie today between you two to keep the peace. At least until the next session.

Justin, what's up with the Flat Fish of the WRONG kind bro??? The first time that I met you in the surf, your rod gets snapped in half by a Shovelnose. The second time you frisco hooked a Sting Ray and this last time you got yourself a personal best Butterfly Ray. I think you're getting warmer buddy. You watch, I predict that you will shatter that 23" PB Halibut of yours very soon.

Robert, the Man, the Machine... You were on a mission today bro. You forged ahead and plowed the surf to stir them up for us. Stirred up is putting it midly. That big trough bite was insane... 30 minutes of fast & furious action. As close as it gets to being wide open in the surf, love it!
Lets do it again soon! :Big Grin:

Days like these don't come along very often and I'm glad that I got to experience it with my S.W.A.T. brothers and sisters. Until we meet again...

Some additional pics.

I must say that Jason & Tess make a great TEAM. She hooks and land the fish... Jason Boga Grip it, take the hook out and takes her picture. This cycle repeats itself over and over and over again all day long. She got you trained pretty well Jason. :Big Smile:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/005-14.jpg

This is awesome. Jason wade out past the first trench, Robert made a cast behind him into that trench and sticks a legal Halibut. :EyePop:

Nice legal Roberto!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/023-8.jpg

I have to add more 130MR LC's to my arsenal.

Tess already told the story on how Jason found my lost 130 LC. But here's something kinda odd. I broke off the lure on an underwater boiler. When I reeled in the rest of my line, the last few feet of the mono was seriously frayed. When Jason found the lure and brought it back to me, it had no line attached to it. :???::!!!::???:
It washed back up to the shore perfectly clean, no bent hooks, no marks, no damage...
As if Poseidon was saying, "Here's your lure back..."
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/013-11.jpg

2nd 30" Halibut this year. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/017-10.jpg

Funny moment...
As we were leaving for the morning, Robert walks down to the surf to wash the sand off his Halibut. A wave came and knocks the dead Flattie out of his hand and disappeared in the white water. We saw Robert spin around frantically looking for the fish. We heard him yell "Where the heck is the fish...?!?" I thought he was just messing with us until I saw the bewildered look on his face. We all ran down to the surf and was combing the surf for the Halibut. Tess finally found it and brought it back up to the sand... hilarious!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/045-5.jpg

It was a perfect morning... until. Before you slam closed the trunk of your car, make sure that your rod isn't in the way.

That was one of the funnest surf outings I've ever been on. It was hilarious hearing everyone scream, "WHOOOOOOOAAAAA" every time someone got a hook up. Wish we got some video of that. Ha ha ha especially when Arthur did the fake out "WHOOOOA" I was already shaking my head thinking "Damn, another one!?". It was a slow start, but SWAT tracked down the honey hole and tore it up!

Arthur, dude you are the fricken man. It was unbelievable how you went the entire morning without a bite and the first three casts you make into the honey hole and you pull out three butts back to back. 2 Legals, one a 30 incher!!:Not Worthy:

Robert, WTG pulling it off in the end with the last minute legal. Nice job!
BTW how the heck does a dead fish swim away from your kung-fu death grip?

Justin, it was nice fishing with you for the first time. Hope to meet up with you again during the next hot bite.

Tess, I thought I was on my road to victory. I was on a consistent bite of short butts and was getting the feeling that the next one was going to be the legal. Until of course I was unhooking another short butt and heard all the commotion of you hooking into something big. :Rolls Eyes:

No flatties today, but you were rewarded with a nice WSB instead. Nice job fighting the fish into submission and guiding her to shore. You handled it like a pro and you did great! I'm proud of you. :Thumbs Up:

It was nice having breakfast with you and Tess. I almost fell asleep on the way home...

Arthur, What can I say...4 legals in 2 days is quite impressive! That 30" WAS A BEAUTIFUL FISH AND WILL TASTE GREAT CEVICHE STYLE AND BARBEQUED THIS WEEKEND...

Tesserz, This is a truly awesome post!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

The past few months I've been trying to get another phase of my house remodel promise completed so I can sneek down to one of the O.C. Beaches to put some of the tips two of the founding SWAT Leaders taught me and my Buddy Trolly to use..........I was close to packing up and going tomorrow but just one more day and I'll be able to get in the water.
Your reports are so much fun to read.........almost as if I was there watching all of you enjoy the day in the surf.......Good People, Good Friends and just plain old Good Times!

I've been showing my wife your reports and how you and Jason have such a great time as the first SWAT Couple hinting to her that she might like to try it out........Well, we'll see:LOL:

Congratulations on the WSB and keep the Fun and Positive reports coming!

Wow, SWAT keeps redefining the phrase "Epic". Just when you can't possibly think it can get any better, IT DOES.
This is what I miss the most about fishing with the SWAT Crew. The Camaraderie, the friendship, the friendly ribbing, the good times. Throw in a few nice fish and you have pretty much a perfect day. :Big Grin:

Tess, beautiful WSB, your smile just lights up the board and I'm sure we'll see much more of it as you continue to pull amazing fish out of the surf. Great story of Wingnut touching your rod. He does have the Midas touch and is the luckiest guy I've ever met. :Envious:

Jason, you are a very lucky man to have your significant other share a mutual interest. I don't consider going shopping with my wife quality time. But what you guys are doing together out there are truly treasured moments. You better put a ring on it soon Jason, if you haven't already done so buddy.

Robert, you've been tearing it since the first time I met you at the Hunting Giants surf event in Malibu. A SWAT poster boy and a natural in the surf. :Envious:
But we don't release dead flatties buddy.
Enjoy that nice Halibut, Arthur doesn't owe much of anything to anybody, but when he pays them back, it's always "with interest."

Arthur, now everybody have seen how hot Tess has been in the surf. But I noticed that you've been quietly on a tear yourself. If I follow your reports correctly, that's 6 legal Halibut in the last four surf sessions for you, amazing numbers. :EyePop: I think it's because you are so consistent with your performance week after week that it's become just the norm for the rest of us to see it. I couldn't think of anyone else I would rather have at my side going into surf combat. Just don't be touching my rod out there buddy.

Way to bring in the quality fish ladies and gents.

Arthur, what is that two 30" halis this year now? Good stuff brotha, Time for me to step up the game. I'm bringing in the 35+

Tess, gurrllll, what CANT you do? you definitely caught on to the surf game real quick. There's no stopping you...keep it up! I second the fact that your reports are top notch, almost as good as Wingnuts, almost.:LOL: Congrats on the PB WSB.

Jason, Robert and Justin, good stuff guys, each one of you had a nice fish at one point or another. Actually, everyone did! lol

I'm glad that Jason didn't ask Arthur to touch HIS rod too.
Just joking Art, don't send the Team 6 assassins after me.

SWAT Rule #1
Under no circumstances is a MALE SWAT member allowed to touch another MALE members rod! http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/naughty.gif

BB, I'd rather wear the skunk before asking anyone to touch my "rod". LOL

Jason, you are a very lucky man to have your significant other share a mutual interest. I don't consider going shopping with my wife quality time. But what you guys are doing together out there are truly treasured moments. You better put a ring on it soon Jason, if you haven't already done so buddy.

Thanks blackwater. I'm very lucky to have a girl that enjoys fishing just as much as I do. Don't get me wrong she's still a girly girl at heart and still loves to shop. :Rolls Eyes: Oh, and I'm working on that ring.

Yo Arthur, I thought for sure I was on that 4th legal we were searching so hard for! What a let down! http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/thumbsdown.gif:ROFL:

I wish I could say it was a tie, but she pulled another quality fish from the surf and she deserves her victory. There are no haters in SWAT.

Sorry about your rod. That sucks! So is that covered under warranty?

Jason, I didn't know you hooked 3 hali's, I was so far ahead of you guys I didn't notice.
It was nice having breakfast with you and Tess. I almost fell asleep on the way home...

<><

Bro you just breezed on through the sweet spot! You definitely were on a mission that morning and I'm glad you finally hooked into one. And it was legal! WTG

We're buying lunch/breakfast the next time we see you. For REAL this time!

Wow, thanks everyone for all your kind words. It was truly an amazing morning with most fish caught within a 30-40 minute window. Awesome! We all had such a great day of fishing, but what makes it most memorable for me were the good laughs we were having and the crazy funny stories that came out of the trip. I love being out there with my new S.W.A.T. brothers and I look forward to many more days like this.

I had a pretty decent session the previous morning, so I wanted the rest of you guys to have the same success.
...

We're glad we were able to convince you to come down too! It definitely wouldn't have been the same without you. :Big Grin: Heyyy I try my best to NOT fish like a girl, lol, but there's some truth to that because I can't stop my helpless shrieks when getting smashed by waves or stepping into a hole, or the fact that me and pliers don't work well together so I need someone to unhook my fish. But I'll work on the 2nd one... know where I can get some pink or purple pliers??

I didn't mind letting Jason lead this time... esp since I was winning 2 to 1. Just wanted to give him a chance to tie it up.  But yes, we do make a great team... although it took everything in me to walk away from that good bite to snap a pic of his first hali.

That WSB was so much fun bringing in, I can't wait to hook into a legal one! :Envious:

OUCH about your rod. It hurts me. Sorry to see that happened after our great morning.

I love love love your puggies and the hali mats! :Big Smile:

Looks like Arthur's gonna win his LC's. Settin the bar a little higher each tme!
That's exactly what I thought when he brought in that beast! Can't compete with the Commander.

:Thumbs Up:

Seriously, I thought you had me beat. :Envious: Although we were both getting bit, you were pulling in the better quality fish and I was just waiting for your your next one to be legal. That OG Hunting Giants LC is a beast!! Or maybe Wingnut blessed it beforehand with his mystical powers like he did with my rod. Either way, it caught my PB hali, corbina, and WSB!! :EyePop:

Awwwwww you're proud of me??? :Big Smile: I still feel like this  thinking about the last one, I couldn't let it happen again. Thanks for the coaching... I think the trigger words are "calm down" so I can remember to take it easy cauz I just get too darn excited! You're the best!! http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/hug.gif

Seriously, is that story of Wingnut touching your rod true??? That's kinda creepy.

Tell me about it! But hey, I'm not complaining one bit!! :Envious:

Just don't be touching my rod out there buddy.

http://www.runemasterstudios.com/graemlins/images/agree.gif with everything you said! Especially the part about Jason putting a ring on it. :Envious: :Secret:

Tess, Tess, Tess!!!
You said you would let me have the lead and what do you do!?
You get there, take the lead and first cast you get nailed...
Just kidding Tess, you can have the lead anytime you want. That was a beautiful WSB you got today...:Big Grin:
...
It was nice having breakfast with you and Tess. I almost fell asleep on the way home...

 I was so pumped when we got out there, with the 3 of you beating us to the surf and Justin already putting one up on the board, I was eager to get my line in the water. :Envious: You know I was joking about the letting you lead thing... but after I caught that first one you were off and running! But you brought it with that legal, that was awesome... and delicious!!

Thanks again for breakfast... but it's really gonna be on us next time! And yipes... be careful with that drive home.

Fun fun fun just amazing so cool to see a lady in the surf ,wow if I could get my wife interested ...to bad halibuts don't give massages...she would be sure to come with me then...ummmmm halicabobs yeah

OMG if halibuts gave massages I'd be fishing every single day.

Thanks so much! Sounds like your remodel will be complete just in time for the hot summer bite. I try to make my reports fun and exciting because that's exactly how the trips go... always good times.

You should absolutely have your wife try it out! I understand that braving the cold, rough surf before dawn isn't every woman's dream of an enjoyable morning  but maybe you could do what Jason did and start her off with something like perch. If she enjoys it then maybe she'll start wanting to try for bigger fish. :Envious:

The attack on the enemy this week have been relentless.. Way to keep the pressure on them gusys. Also congradulations to Tess on yet another new personal best and the only WSB of the day.... Hope to fish with you all soon.

Thanks Jerry. Robert and Arthur called it, I just happened to be the lucky one to hook into it. :Big Grin:

Oo something that we forgot to mention... while me and Jason were retying (actually when Jason was retying and I was waiting to get my rod back ) I heard Arthur, Robert, and Justin hooting and hollering about something. None of them had a fish on so when I asked them about it later they said they saw a WSB cruising by in a trough right in front of them!! They all casted to it but it flipped them off and said, "not this time suckers!"

Tess, you are one great addition to SWAT...not only do you fish your hali off, your posts are second to none, and you're even cuter than Wingnut!

LOL thanks Sid! These guys make it easy for me to write reports like these.

:Thumbs Up: to all.

Hahah thanks Bill. You're right though... lately I feel like I've been doing a lot more fishing than sleeping. :Tired: But days like this make it all worth it. :Big Grin: And yes, I know exactly what you mean. :Envious: And I hope so too... SOON!

See how much stuff I missed in his follow-up post? So many good stories to tell, and all from different perspectives... I love reading everyone else's take on the day.

I gotta agree. Seabass of any size will flash black bars. Also, they usually have yellow in their fins. That is one silvery fish with a smaller head. Im gonna third the corvina vote. Monster corvina.

Tess,
That is a truly spectacular surf catch! I'm going with corvina too since it doesn't look like your fish had the raised ridge on its belly that WSB do. I've never heard of one of those being caught from the surf before in SoCal, and that is a monster when compared to the ones pulled out of SD and Mission Bays! That sandbass is a great fish as well. You're definitely doing a fantastic job out there. Corbina on the LC and a Shortfin Corvina on the LC in only a few weeks time!?! It'll be great to see what you catch next.... maybe a surf Yellowtail?

Jason,
Congrats on getting the first flattie of the morning! Sorry about the short, and we all have those moments. So close, but so far! He'll come back to you soon as a nice fat legal. You still beat the skunk, and your own exotic is coming soon!

Robert,
Way to go on sticking a nice legal flattie. Gotta love it when the first fish of the day is also the one you were looking for! Dad and I may make it down your way this coming weekend seeing as you guys have had so much success.

Arthur,
ANOTHER 30in halibut!?!?! Come on man, leave some for the rest of us! Haha, another 2 legal day, and another 30in on top of that. Lots of legals have been making there way home with SWAT as of late, and I personally am in favor of it! Halibut is definitely tasty. You are a lucky person my friend, and it seems that this week was particularly lucky. I think Poseidon knows he's going to have a bit of a reprieve soon, and is rewarding your good kharma. Glad to see you tossing the 130 too! I'm looking forward to tossing mine, and with your success I've got high hopes!

Looking forward to fishing with all of you guys again soon!

Arthur, I noticed the fangs when I boga'd the fish, but didn't think anything of it. The reports of Corvina that I've seen are usually caught further down south in the bays and much smaller than the fish that Tess caught. Figured a fish of that size caught out of the surf had to be a WSB, but this is probably a better and more impressive catch.

Scratch Corvina off the list for S.W.A.T! Good job Tess! :Thumbs Up: And good eye bishop.

I'm way late on a response to this one..out of town..work..blah.

It was a great day. Lots of fun and great company. I had planned on beating everyone there that morning and was on track to do just that until I locked my keys in my truck while it was running before I left the house!!!! But thanks to a misled youth I was able to get it unlocked and was on my way ;) I did a superman style change over and was out of my truck and in the water in about two minutes...got there just in time to hook up to what I thought was going to be a good but...then thought it was a shark..then saw it and thought it was a waste of time...jk jk...i fight all fish equally ;)

Crazy about the Corvina...I didn't take a look at it after Tess landed it but Aurthor went and took some pics and came over to fish next to me and told me that it looked different and he wasn't sure it was a WSB...turned out to be a better catch. I'm even more jealous now!!
I haven't had the best of luck hooking up on butts the last few trips but, it's all good..I am happy that everyone got the ones they did...including Aurthors monster....that thing was fat!!!
Wish I could have stayed longer but work was calling....back to reality!

Tess and Jason
It was good meeting and fishing with you guys. I had no idea that it was you too in the parking lot or I would of at least said hi before I ran down to get the head start ;) didn't help much...you guys killed it!!! Glad you guys made it down and hope to do it again soon...I will def let you know if it gets hot again and hope you guys will do the same!!

Robert,

I need AAA or a new spare key....that was some frustrating BS!! Especially at 0415 in the morning and it being dark. Good fishing with you as always and looking forward to the next time. You were charging hard that morning...I had to squint to see you at times you got so far ahead...but it all worked out in the end. I totally thought you were joking around about the fish taking off until Tess pulled it up...crazy!!!

Aurthor,

I am going to go ahead and agree with you now...you have awesome luck!! Come with me to get some lotto tickets!!! HAHA!! You are the man. Three in a row again!!?? Unheard of!! Sorry about the rod...that sucks!!! That 30 incher was a monster!!! It was fat!! I think I am going to invest in some 130's ;) let's do this again soon...I'm down for a drive...

Thanks again to all who were there for coming, it was one of the funnest trips I've been on in awhile...lots of hook up and lots of high fives....until next time...

Justin was throwing a FM 110 in the Metallic Horse Mackerel pattern.

I lost three FM 130MR's in the last two days in the surf.

Oops.. I was looking at the first pic and only saw two trebles. I just noticed the middle treble in the last pic just now when you mentioned it. Sorry to hear about the lost 130's. That sucks!

TESTING..TESTING..1,2.. 7/1/11

Snuck out for a solo mission on Friday to test out some new gear and SWAT apparel. Sometime last week, I walked into Turner's and picked up a new Skeete Reese Tessera casting rod. I was actually looking for a discounted Crucial or Clarus, but I guess all the Shimano rods are red hot right now and couldn't find one with the right specs.

Turner's also had the Skeete rods on sale. It had all the specs I was looking for and the obnoxious yellow coloring was an added bonus. I paired it up with a Daiwa Coastal I picked up from ebay, which I rebuilt with some new carbontex drag washers.

Well after 4 hours of fishing and getting rolled TWICE , I caught some fish on my new rod and the reel performed flawlessly after being dunked a few times. The only test that remains for my new gear is catching a legal flattie.

The only thing that failed today was my waders. I was pulling in a sandie to shore when I slipped on a mossy rock and bashed my knee on a boulder. :Explode: When I waded back out to fish, I felt the cold water rushing into a hole where I just bashed my knee. Not fun at all.

Here's a few pics.

My very first surf calico. Also caught a queen fish before this. (Not Pictured)

Thought this fish was a monster calico, but all he did was turd roll himself into some rocks.

nice job on your 1st surf calico! :Thumbs Up: not too shabby for a quick solo mission. sucks about bashing your knee and ripping your waders though. i was wondering why you were soaked from the CHEST DOWN instead of chest up when you got home. it's ok... it's a good excuse to buy new waders. i like your new yellow rod... do they have it in pink? hehehehe. let's see how it stands up to a 30 incher!

Nice new set-up Jason. :Thumbs Up:

Bummer about the waders, but nothing a basic waders patch kit can't take care of.

You did better than I did on Saturday. :Envious:
Sorry again for us playing that trick on you & Tess on Saturday. John (Klocked) and Frank (iLLest) got the same treatment. :Big Smile:

I can barely make out the writing on the bottom of this LC. lol
Looks like it came from the S.W.A.T. armory.

Wow, great read. Just chanced on this thread as I normally do not read the salt water threads as I'm inland...:)

Question:
1. What lb test line do you all generally for this type of surf fishing?
2. What length rod?
3. What's the weight of those lures?

Thanks,
UL

What a great report you guys. I've only fished that spot once now and the conditions were nothing like the calm day I see in this report. Sooner or later I'm going to hit that spot when it's ON !
A great day had by all for sure and Arthur....... Your Midas touch is simply amazing bro.
I think you need to touch my rod next time

P.S.
Sorry for the late response. My IT guy has not been able to fix my pc....LOL
