Caught this guy this morning on 10lb working a 3" sexy smelt on 1/4 ox hammer head. Man did he fight!

I don't think that's a broomtail--the fins, even soft ray dorsal and ventral not to mention the tail don't match a broomtail's. Tail aside, a broomtail's soft ray dorsal and ventral are straightedged/pointed. The fish here is rounded. I'm sure it's protected or endangered whatever it is.

I have always heard rumors of giant grouper in NPH like 200+ size. Anyone else ever hear that?

I think it's very possible. Those groupers maybe Broomtails.
You sneaky little devil. That lil grouper does look a lot like a juvi broomtail.

Broomtails don't get over a 100lbs and getting one that big is a super rare occurrence. The world record is right at 100lbs..

It was super fun while it lasted lol. I can see how people can mistaken the two fish the markings are rather similar.
