View Full Version : Father's Day Battle of the Bay

HESBROS

Well, after the callout of the "Spotted Fever" the plans to meet up Sunday went as planned and it was game on! Meeting time was 0500 at the Dunes. We arrived before Steve and Allen but always early Arthur was there. When we got to gate to pay, the woman working asked if I was Steve? I knew the reason and thought to myself "well, I could be today", but instead told her no, and that he would be right behind me.

Was not long and before steve showed up and we all ready to get the action on. A few changes to the rules. Steve did not have his live well on, so the rule was to photograph all the legal size tourny fish.

Team Bass Widow:

Spottie Slayer was the first to hook up while I was tinkering with the boat at the dock!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190897.jpg

After some tinkering, ok maybe alot of tinkering both team were underway.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190899.jpg

We got to our spot and started the battle. Anthony put one on the boat pretty fast.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190902.jpg

Darn, not big enough! But good job son!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190903.jpg

Anthony's next fish!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190904.jpg

The tide was swinging and the incoming tide was about to begin. I liked the condtion and thought it was going to turn on rather soon. I was wrong, and we really had to work at it.

My first of the day.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190905.jpg

We kept at it, and the bite was slower than expected, as well as shy.

I was able to get a few while the boys tried their hardest.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190906.jpg

Pretty hard fishing here?
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190907.jpg

My team working at it.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190909.jpg

Dink!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190910.jpg

Oh snap! That other team is in our vicinity! We saw them, but they did not see us!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190911.jpg

Finally, a keeper!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190913.jpg

Nicer grade!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190914.jpg

A few more non legals!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190915.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190916.jpg

The boys were working hard and it took its toll on Aaron.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190917.jpg

I was getting them, but not up to par.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190918.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190919.jpg
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190920.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190922.jpg

Anthony worked really hard but was having a hard time getting them to play. It seemed like your presentation and retrieve had to be perfect. We decided to go find the spotted fever and see what they were up to.

"Arthur, you and Allen just take turns sticking your finger in the hole wher the water is coming from".
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190923.jpg

The oppostion at work! They said they had gotten a few bigger models......
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190924.jpg

Captain Spotted Fever!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190925.jpg

I wish you would step off that swim step!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190926.jpg

We left the spotted fever in search of our big ones and the boys traded places.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190928.jpg

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190929.jpg

More smallies!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190930.jpg

We worked a very long stretch for the above fish and went to find the spotted fever again. We were drifting side by side and Arthur decided to give us a show.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190932.jpg

Its a baby!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190933.jpg

Hmmmm.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190934.jpg

The day was getting short and we only had the one keeper.......and the fish were getting smaller.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190935.jpg

We met up at PCH bridge around 1600 and agreed to hit one more spot and call it a day. That spot did not produce for us either and we started for the dock!

http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190936.jpg

We may not have one the battle, but I won the award of one of the best Father's Day a dad could ask for! Anthony and Aaron did not have to catch one fish to be my winners! I love you guys!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190937.jpg

The end of a long day! Though, I have not seen any documented fish yet!
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190941.jpg

It was at the end of the day when I realized that the Spotted Fever were dressed appropriately.
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm172/ehesbol/P6190944.jpg

Steve, Allen and Wingnut, I look forward to the next battle. It was fun as usual even on seperate boats!

I will congradualate you when I see the pics!

A few weeks back Eddie text ed me and asked if I was off on a particular Monday and knew it was for a ride on his new boat the "Bass Widow" I returned a text saying that I was really busy and the next opportunity to get out was on "Fathers Day" and did he want to "Buddy Boat"

This past week Eddie would not return any of my calls or text messages about the trip. While at dinner with the family I get a text from Eddie (Any More Rules?). Rules? After returning home I found this thread. Seems our "Buddy Boat " trip was being taken in another direction!
http://fishingnetwork.net/forum4/showthread.php?57849-Fathers-Day-battle-of-the-Bay

Again tried to get in touch with Eddie but he would have nothing of me. Mean while he was in communication and talking smack with Arthur and adding more "Anti-Spotted Fever" Rules without any negotiations on our part.

Up at 0315 and hit the road for the harbor to meet up.

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/005-12.jpg

Bass Widow hits the water. You boys sure are happy this morning.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/006-12.jpg
As Eddie stated she was giving him a rough time at the ramp but we were generous and stayed put until he sorted it out.

I am trying to come up with a plan for the day since the rules state this is where we have to stay for the remainder of the day! "Spotted Fever" is usually finicky about starting up but today she fired and was raring to go.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/007-10.jpg

Aaron's catch at the ramp. He is on the boat so it would count as a # but not big enough to qualify as a legal catch!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/008-10.jpg

Allen's first fish of the day. A Spottie caught on the troll. The rules only address "Drop Trolling or Troll Shotting" so we assumed trolling hard baits was legal! Again a short so just a # and not a qualifying catch.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/009-10.jpg
Bass Widow in the background observing our first fish 200 feet from the ramp.
http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z286/flyngby/P6110178.jpg

As "Team Hesbros" took off turning the corner heading down the harbor we made our first stop to try and see if any of the hundreds of qualifying spotties that were transplanted into the back bay after last weeks weigh-in at the SWBA Tourney were still hanging in the area. The negative tide made the structure we were hitting very shallow and failed to produce anything.

Spot #2 produced a few missed hits by us all. Time to move on. It was then that I tried a new area never fished by the "Spotted Fever" on any previous occasion. We found some very long and open slips that were sitting in 14 feet of water. This turned out to be the trick.

Arthur's first fish of the day.

Eddie pulled side by side and violated our space and was blocking our access and had the boys distract us for a few moments while he to was casting into our "lil Honey Hole"

We both moved on to other locations. Eddie started to work our off-limits area and we had some time for relaxation as headed down towards the ferry and continued to work the deeper waters which continued to pay off.

Very Cool Guys,
If I still had my boat I would have been out there with you guys.

Eddie,
You have 2 fine looking boys and if they are anyhting like their Pops, they must be good people...:Big Grin:

Steve,
Good to see a smile on your face Bud, I guess fishing can do that for a man...

Looks like fun was had by all and who said anything about a competition!?! I thought it was just a bunch of friends getting out on the water together...:Envious:

Thanks For The Report Gents,

The week leading up to the challenge, I was getting inundated with text messages from Eddie...
"Are you guys ready for a spankin'?"
"I want to see your Farmer dance Arthur..."
"Get ready to pay up suckas..." :!!!:
"We're gonna take Wingnut Pug's allowance!" :Envious:

And my favorite... a video text of Aaron, Eddie's son pointing into the camera and saying, "Team Spotted Fever, get ready to GO DOWN!!!" :Big Smile:

I gave it back just as good as I got it from them...

Gotta love the friendly spirit of competition. :Big Grin:

The day wasn't as much about the Harbor Masters rivalry and competition, but more about family and good friends having fun fishing and spending quality time on the water. At the end of the day, we were ALL winners.

But for the record... Team Spotted Fever "crushed" Team Hesbros!

Eddie, Anthony & Aaron - Seeing you guys together and having a good time put a smile on my face all day. Makes me look forward to fatherhood.
Eddie, you were so attentive and supportive of your sons, making sure they enjoyed themselves above all. You have taught them well as I can see how effective they were in slaying the fish. :Thumbs Up: Like Eddie's little clones... lol

Allen - Really nice to meet you and sharing time on the water with an experienced angler. Watching you change up from one artificials to another was a treat and learning experience. You managed to catch fish with everything you decided to throw at them... good stuff. Thanks for making the long drive South to join the Team for a fun day of fishing. :Big Grin:

Steve - I know the last month or so has been pretty tough on you, both personally and professionally. I watched you handle all of it with dignity and class. You are quite the husband, the father and a friend. It was good to see that great smile of yours finally, letting me know that everything is okay again...
Thanks for inviting me to be a part of Team Spotted Fever for this challenge. Looking forward to hitting the surf with you sometime soon!

I'll add a few pics...

I would have a hard time choosing which team to root for, since I've had the pleasure of fishing with both Harbor Masters.
But somehow, I don't think the competition was the main focus of the day.
Fabulous report gentlemen, this is what it's all about. :Big Grin:

Now this is the report I've been waiting to see! :Big Grin: Eddie, Tess and I were rooting you guys the whole time. Looked like everyone caught there fair share of fish. If we only had a gas engine on our little inflatable we would've been out there joining the competition. Good times.

Team Bass Widow: You guys called out the Spotted Fever and they delivered. Looked like you guys caught a good amount of fish. Too bad most of them were short. Is there gonna be a Battle of the Bay II?

Eddie, no better way to spend father's day than fishing with the kids on the new boat. Looked like everyone had a good time. BTW Aaron is getting big.

Team Spotted Fever: Wow, what can I say. Old guys really do rule! Impressive victory! I didn't think you guys would beat Team Bass Widow into submission. Nice job on finding a pattern and sticking the quality spots for the win. The Spotted Fever still remains king of the harbor.

Steve, it's good to see you back out there buddy. We're happy for your win, but I don't think this is over. I think the Bass Widow is going to regroup and redeem itself from this crushing defeat. Can't wait to see a rematch.

I've been thinking of some rules for the rematch....

Arthur has to hold the rod in his teeth all day long
Can only reel in with his big left toe:Angry:
Can only use a bare hook
Has to wear a pirate patch over 1 eye(either one)
Must wear a big captain hook hat with a yellow feather :Cool:
(might as well get feather braids to go along with it):Cool::Cool:

Steve has to fish backwards from the bow at all times
Use his trolling motor foot pedal with the other foot instead of the usual

Both Arthur and Steve must intentionally wrap their fish around the trolling motor shaft
and the main prop twice before boating their catch. :Envious:

I'll think of some more!!!

It was great to have the opportunity to be a participant in the "Battle of the Bay". Things lined up and I was able to make the trip down and get a change to fish with my brother Steve. This was my second trip to NPH with Steve, and while I was preparing for the trip, I threw in a few of my Don Pedro techniques into my bag, to see if they would work, and they did! I'll let Steve share the secrets.

Arthur, It was great to finally meet you and get a chance to fish with you. Steve has always spoke very highly of you and your fishing skill (and sometimes your luck!).

Eddie, It was great seeing you again and meeting your boys, I now know 3 generations of your family!

When it was all said and done, after all the hype, rules, trash talking both on and off the water, it all came down to a bunch of family and friends having a great day on the water!!!

I've been thinking of some rules for the rematch....

Arthur has to hold the rod in his teeth all day long
Can only reel in with his big left toe:Angry:
Can only use a bare hook

We would STILL win John! :Big Smile:

Yes it is, the last batch I was able to find was two years ago at the Fred hall Show. They were in the freshwater Gulp packaging. The Smelt color is pretty close, but doesn't look as natural & realistic. The all white/pearl is actually my favorite.

Great report you guys.Sorry for the late response but my PC has been sick. My fathers day didn't turn out as fishy but it was a blast never the less.
Good to see the harbor masters out in force again!
