Well at least for me it is! A double on the Fly!!!

Got to the Kern around 10ish, stoped by the shop, got some flies, and the rest is history!

This was the first fish of the day... I hooked up, but I was able to see my flies... hhhmmm... interesting!

After further inspection, my fly got ahold of the loop. There was a hook deep in its mouth. I just clipped the line shorter that way he would not get caught.

And the Kicker of the day! Looks like he was bit/pecked/scratched on top of its dorsal fin.

I could be wrong, but when DFG started stocking the Kern years ago, they chose a cutthroat strain of trout to stock the river with.

I could be wrong tho

Gorgeous fish!!! but not cutt.... cutt's have more yellow coloration on the belly and more spots (not parr marks) but awesome job out there

Kern could possibly have cuttbows, but its a very small chance. They get bred out of the system with interspecies spawning in a manner of years usually. Cutt hybrids almost always have the slash, even if its faint, and its something thats very distinctive even then. Fish in the Kern with that bright coloration on the sides are likely some form of Red Band hybrids, which was the true native trout of the main Kern and still occurs from time to time today. Good fishing though, catching a double nymphing is a trip. 2nd fish probably ate the dropper thinking his buddy had dropped some food lol

Great job on the fish. Gotta' love the double. I have had the same thing happen before. Usually the second fish breaks off due to them pulling against each other with such a short leader between them.
Days like that are the reason I moved here.
The fish in question looks to me to be a Kern River rainbow, the native fish of the river. they are best identified by a bright red stripe down their bodies. The hatchery here stocks 4 varieties of rainbow trout. They are Whitneys, Shaver lake and Eagle lake. I can't remember the fourth right now but it will come to me later. This is due to the fact that they they have different times of the year which they spawn. this allows stocking to continue all year.
the river is still fishing great as you can see.
The warmer weather predicted in near future will be bringing the river up once again and fishing will become more difficult in the coming weeks. Weekly stocking will continue through November so plenty of fish will be available. Different tactics will be needed but with some adjustment fishermen can do well in all conditions.
Tight Lines,
John

Well hell... it seems like its going to be that time of the year again John. RUN-OFF!
Since yesterday, the river has gone up almost 600cfs. That and warmer weather consistently, just a matter of days now.

NWS issued flood warnings in the southern sierras due to the snowmelt.

i'm heading out there this weekend to do some camping with some friends. Not a fishing trip, but I'm bringing my poles! My friends 10 yr old niece is going, so if I can find some fish, maybe I'll try to get her hooked up on a couple. Ok, that's the reason I'm telling everyone, but really, its cuz I can't go anywhere there's water and want to fish it. Looks like you had a good time out there. Thanks for the report
