NICE ONE SEAL! I would love to hold my fish like that too..but grilled.

The 1st and 3rd are both correct. 2nd one, small or large, horizontal double hand is the way to go. This is why I invested in a quick release dehooking gear for small and large fishes. Look up for the Arc Dehooker. The smallest one is still too big for sunfishes and gills. But any other fish with a larger mouth than those two, easy removal while they're still in the water, or slightly out of the water no more than 1 foot.

the first one is really informative. thanks for the post. did think you could break his jaw, or having a cheap net mattered for survival rate

I see alot more pros doing the behind the gill pinch now days.....I guess they were getting a lot of heat for lipping them.

I always felt lipping them is fine, as long as you grab the tail for balance.

The absolute SAFEST way to handle a fish (excluding keeping them submerged in the water) is by cradling them on their side, their ribs will protect the organs.

You can actually cause severe damage by placing your hand under the belly, since their ribs do not provide ventral protection.. Lipping them horizontally is VERY bad for the fish. Lipping them vertically, much better.
