Got a late call from Desmond, wanting to fish, I told him that Saturday was available because I never heard back from the guy who I had scheduled :(
It was going to be Desmond and his girlfriend but he informed later it was just going to be a guys trip and that was for the best because if she would have come with us as bad as the wind was it would have made for a short trip.
Well with this wind came a storm front, cold and high pressure system that had the bass in lock down mode, we beat the banks and only produced a couple of bass and trout, Desmond did get one nice striper on the LC http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr349/sddave50/ee663c6c.jpg
Did I mention the wind was cranking a 30 plus South wind at times, we worked and worked trying to get on the bass from spot to spot but it just wasn't going to happen, I took him back to the only place that the South wind doesn't blow out, Yellow bar, the wind was nice but there was a lake lice back there that was doing donuts in the back and putting out a four foot wake on all of us trying to fish... there were a few guys anchored up making a slow pick on striper's, I gave Des and little instruction on drop shotting and we decided to anchor up and soak some fresh dines I had got from Gallions.
We gave it a chance but it was just dead for us a the few others that were back there, only one boat seemed to be on them, 4 guys in CC aluminum boat, I talked to them for a while and asked how they were doing and they said they were getting them but It looked like a slow pick.
So we headed back out to look around and toss some cranks on wind blown banks, which that was most of the lake.
While working our way down the bank, Desmond calls out to me to look at the meter and that he saw some good marks on it, I looked and saw what he spotted and sure enough he found us some fish, I pointed the boat into the wind, dropped the anchor and stuck it good, the wind was pretty much head on and we were just getting little bit of swing so I didn't see the need to drop a second anchor down.
We loaded on the bait and dropped down all the way to the bottom, a whole 23 ft...
As I was looking at the bait I started pulling out 9 inch smelt, Steve must have got a mixed scoop from the bait guys, I sure he didn't know, but this stuff didn't look like it would work to well.
The baits weren't in the water more that a minute and I here the sound of Desmond yelling fish on...http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr349/sddave50/6b5e1778.jpghttp://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr349/sddave50/fc39837a.jpghttp://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr349/sddave50/de8f526f.jpg I got the net, Desmond laid the Striper right into it and we were stoked we found the fish and in shallow water, the hell with tossing a anchor down to 275 ft like I did couple days before!
The bite was fast and furious, we were hooking up on almost every bait dropped down, we were on a fish almost every couple of minutes there for about a hour, it slowed down to a steady pick, I was messing with something on the deck and Desmond yells...HEY... Your rod, just as I looked over Desmond has his hand on it just before it's going over the rail.. my boat has rails on the top cap and the reel got hung up on the rail or that rod would have been by by.. well turns out that monster striper that almost pulled my rod in the water was a 9 inch dink... of course if we wouldn't have caught the rod that would have been a 10 pounder that pulled the rod off the deck... Note to selve, use the rod holders... the action was hot just like it should be, when you get on the fish, time just flys by, we kept the nice ones and tossed the dinks back, but most of the fish were nice, we got our limits, kept 15 to take home. The day got saved by Mister Stripy, Desmond's first Striper and It was a slay day... awesome finish to tough day... good times...
