Report #1 - Pre-mission reconnaissance. Friday 6/3/11
Report #2 - S.W.A.T. Exploratory Mission. Saturday 6/4/11
Report #3 - Bonus Non-Fishing R&R Report. Memorial Day 5/30/11

Report #1 - Friday 6/3
The Team had preliminary plans to drop in on the A.O. "Pea Soup" Saturday morning to start our exploratory mission. With all the high swells pounding the shoreline all week long and bringing down the water temperature everywhere, I decided to do a quick 2-hour evening recon session to scope out the conditions ahead of the S.W.A.T. advance. Left the office and hit the Friday evening gridlock en-route to the A.O. Got there around 6:00pm, all I need is a couple of hours to see if conditions was halfway decent to greenlight Saturday's mission or scrub it and change the attack plans.

Conditions: Partly sunny skies, warm weather, mild on-shore wind, water temperature noticeably colder than it has been. I would guess somewhere in the mid 50's. Water clarity surprisingly good, moderate to heavy salad presence. Swells 2-3 feet in moderate intervals. No baitfish presence. Incoming rising tide.
Techniques: Throwing hard baits.

There were heavy concentration of salad throughout the surf along with some murky patches here and there, but overall, conditions were surprisingly good.
Nothing for awhile, not even a bump on the LC for the first hour, but the last 45 minutes or so (between 7:15 and 8:00pm) the action started to heat up. In the last moments of daylight, the fish became very active and I suddenly got multiple strikes in quick succession. Landed four decent fish, missed about a half dozen strikes and farmed a couple more. Not bad for a 2-hour session. Backed out of the surf around 8:00pm and finished the evening with two Calico Bass (14", 16") and two short Halibut (19", 21"). Sent out the S.W.A.T. directive on the drive home to the Team that Saturday's mission is a "Go." :Thumbs Up:

Report #2 - Saturday 6/4
Dropped into the A.O. with a few S.W.A.T. members at greylight hoping that conditions has improved within the last 10 hours since my recon mission the previous evening. Conditions indeed had changed overnight, some for the better, some for the worse.

Conditions: Early morning overcast, cool weather, moderate on-shore wind, water temperature feels even colder. Water clarity excellent, light salad presence. Swells 1-2 feet in moderate intervals. No baitfish presence. Negative low tide.
Techniques: Throwing hard baits / Dropshotting plastics
S.W.A.T. Roll Call: Murrieta Angler (Robert), Klocked (John), Midgettosser1 (Mike), iLLest (Frank) Wingnut (Arthur)

In the surf at the first sign of visible light and the bite was on! At a negative low tide, we had access to the kelp beds within casting distance and took full advantage of it. Casting around and sometimes into the kelp itself produced some vicious strikes.
Robert was on fire and started the morning off on the right foot with his Personal Best surf Calico Bass! The beast hammered the LC and took him deep into the kelp bed. Robert did a fantastic job handling the situation. Patiently giving the fish line and plenty of time to work itself free. Robert nailed and landed three Calico and a Torpedo Smelt even before any of us put a single fish on the sand. :Envious:

Mike farmed a nice fish and I kept getting short strikes while Robert continues with the hot stick.

Look at all the dead kelp washing up on the shoreline. We will be seeing a lot more of this as the water warms up. Water warms up, kelp dies, breaks free and washes up to shore.

New species for Robert... Needlefish?
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%208/Wingnut%209/014-6.jpg

After a few hours, we vacated the original A.O. and headed to explore another location. We were fishing hard and some of us took on some water and were soaked. The wind picked up and got our teeth chattering, I mean it was COLD, so we decided to hike back to the cars for a quick change before heading out to the next spot.
The next area, code name, "Beans Central."
I've never seen so many Corbina in one place before. Multiple schools of 10 or so large Corbina cruising the shallows. :EyePop:
We were tempted to Carolina rig up some Sand Crabs.
Racked up a bunch of short Flatties in a couple of hours and called it a day.
Met a couple of cool fellow surf anglers out there, sorry guys, but I didn't catch your names. If you are FNN members, log-in and say hello. Nice to meet you guys.
We probably got about a dozen short Halibut up to 21 1/2". Here are pics of some of them...

Damn... almost!

Look who shows up fashionably late, Marc (BSP) and Nick (Dad).
We cleaned out the spot already guys... lol

Robert, you definitely had the hot stick today. Congrats on the beautiful PB Calico. Good luck on the continued mission tomorrow.
John, you are relentless my friend, trying to get those Corbina to take the LC. You almost succeeded as a couple of them actually chased and took swipes at the lure. You even hooked one and had it on for a few seconds.
Frank, been awhile bro, glad you could make it out and fish with the Team. Congrats on the Calico & Sand Bass combo. Thanks for not laughing too hard when you saw me fall in that trench and go up to my neck... lol
Mike, always good fishing with you buddy. I know you are a very busy man, thanks for taking the time to come out and fish with the Team. I'll keep you posted on the upcoming S.W.A.T. kayak mission.
Marc & Dad, Good to see you guys finally made it out there... better late than never.
That frat party must be something else Marc, for you not to be able to get up in time to hit the surf... hahaha

On a side note: Today was an expensive mission. We lost a combined total of NINE (9) LC's today to the treacherous battleground! :EyePop:

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everybody, until the next tide... peace.

Bonus Report #3 - Memorial Day 5/30
Tried hard to talk the little lady into getting fitted for a new pair of waders so I can have an excuse to fish on Memorial Day. No such luck... so this will be a non-fishing report. lol
Spent the day in Newport Bay area. Actually saw a bait & wait guy pull out a 26" Hali in the flat and stagnant bay water on frozen Anchovies... damn. :Envious:
Perfectly warm and sunny day. Walked the Pugs all over the place. Landlocked Halibutt everywhere... frolicking and playing in & out of the water. Came and left with one legal... A nice and relaxing day, exactly what I needed to re-charge my batteries.

Wow.....What a great day for the team! Robert....Your an animal bro. Awesome PB Calico brotha. Love that big old head and color and of course.........Love the bass thumb!
It's good to see Mike and Frank out on the recon too. It's been too long guys!
I was wondering all day long if you guys were killing it and you were. Sometimes the pea soup AO gives up the quality fish and today was no exception. I know most of you worked hard for just a few fish but hey....with all of this crazy weather and the water temp drops.......You guys should be very proud of your acomplishments today.
Great job gentleman.......The enemy is on the run!

Nice land locked Butt by the way Arthur !

Gotta go....Taking the girls out for a little father daughter OC slayage in the morning at a NEW undisclosed enemy stronghold!

Good job guys:Thumbs Up:
Thanks again Arthur for the fun to read report.

What can I say Arthur? Another fantastic SWAT Team Report. Way to go out there guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

I don't think so pon....he's just persistent, and knows how to cast. that spinner will come back and bite him one of these days though i think. All the SWAt brothers have gifts, some show themselves more often then others, but abeit, it's there. I'm thinking about looking for metal clad waders, if they keep digging in the rocks deeper! Rained up here this evening, may try for a butt tomorrow with the flat seas.

Awesome report! I just caught my first halibut of the year today at Malibu pier and I wanted to post it, but I am having difficulty starting a thread. If you guys would be kind enough to send me a message as to how to start a thread, I would really appreciate it.

GREAT JOB ON getting out there and finding all the species; the water must have warmed up a few degrees just from all the intense LC action and dipping bodies in that cove. I just wear wet suit and let 'em get at me.
THe calico is a monster - must have been a rush working it out of the weeds and those flatties do add up nicely.
Thank you for encouraging report!

Nobody prepares more for a mission than SWAT. Can't argue with the consistent results. :Not Worthy: Just got a copy of Bill Varney's new book in the mail and saw your photos in there, very cool bro. Spent a couple of hours chucking swimbaits at Castaic yesterday for nothing. Might be heading to Vegas the end of the month for my birthday, can we borrow your pad for a weekend bash???

Nice job out there guys! Great report as usual. :Thumbs Up: Wow Robert, you weren't kidding about that calico, that sucker's huge! And I like that kelp fish. Looks like you were all working hard with so much kelp and maneuvering thru wader-tearing rocks (yipes!). We saw a bunch of that dead kelp washed up on our outing today and I was wondering why.

Although you lost those LCs (ouch), it still looks like you all had a great time... and a nice amount of fish to show for it. Good idea about the recon... doing that may have come in handy for us today.

Excellent read there Art, got my weekly fix of the SWAT adventure. :Big Grin:
I'm still amazed how you guys can pull out so many quality Calico and Sandies so close to the shore. Corbina central? :Secret: I remember I caught my first Corbina fishing with you a couple of years ago up in Santa Barbara. It was only a 14 incher but pulled hard. That's one thing that I can say I have done that Wingnut hasn't been able to do, catching a Bean on the LC. Well done crew and looking forward to the next report.

We miss you out there buddy, but I know you had other priorities.
We did have to work extra hard for the fish, but it was well worth it. Hopefully, conditions will improve for another mission when I get back in town this weekend.

Don't worry Bill, conditions in the Northern quadrant should improve anytime now. I know you guys are dying to get back in the action. Those fish aren't going anywhere, they're just being lulled into a false sense of security... their peaceful world will not last.

Great job on the bass! They will stick you! Hey, why do I usually end up getting hungry after reading your reports? Lol
The spines are easy to avoid, what got Robert was the sharp teeth when he went to lip the Toad.
I usually get hungry after I finish writing a report...

Somewhere in the back bay area Patrick. Not very crowded, lots of parking, nice BBQ area and clean restroom facilities. It's the O.C., you expect anything less...?

One skunk bustin' fishy for me!! but it didn't matter, I had a blast getting rolled twice, pulling urchin spines out of my hand and losing 2 lc's in the process. Just another extra-ordinary SWAT mission!

Nice fishing with you Arthur, Mike, Frank and Roberto!
Thanks for lunch Arthur!
Dang John, you are a warrior... I didn't know you went down that bad. You hide your pain well buddy, I think you even force yourself not to bleed. I remember telling everybody to be careful when going down, to watch where you plant your hands. The place was full of Urchins, I can feel them crunching under my boots while I was wading.
This was one of the harsher and definitely more costly S.W.A.T. missions. Injuries, ripped waders, lost LC's...
Wicked Urchin spines. :!!!:

Good job out there guys on another successful mission. A new shore caught personal best Robert and an exotic for Mike and plenty of other fish to go around well done guys.. I'll be hitting the beach tomorrow morning in the grey searching for enemy targets.

JerryG
Thanks for the update on the follow-up mission brother Jerry.
Conditions can change in an instant, I know the swells picked up quite a bit the next day.
Hope to fish with you soon my friend. :Big Grin:

Great report brotha man ! Oh so u got the women in the pics huh...hehehehehe steppin that game up !
Man you guys are out there puttin in mad werk s0n !
I like the geeked up shot ! You own !
The game doesn't need to be stepped up when it's already at a high level Armando... lol
And yes, I prefer the "Geeked up" look over the "Gangstered down" look any day.
Good luck with your new position with Team 57. Hope the pay is good. :Big Smile:

Another amazing SWAT report Art, what a fun read.
Damn dude your girl dont have an ounce of fat on her. That is nuts seeing how good you guys eat.
Actually, most of everything we eat is pretty healthy Vince. And there's the hours spent in the gym, the Yoga classes and miles on the treadmill. That's just her, for me... I just walk the Pugs for my exercise.

Had a blast fishing with you guys today. Good to meet/fish with you Robert, John, and Frank. And good to meet you Nick and Marc.

That mystery fish is a pipefish. Related to seahorses.
Glad you could come out with us Mike.
You're right, that Pipefish have a similar head as the Seahorse, fascinating fish.

What can I say Arthur? Another fantastic SWAT Team Report. Way to go out there guys!:Thumbs Up::Thumbs Up:

Personally I think you guys better keep an eye on Robert. I think he might just have an extra weapon or two in his arsenal he isnt making known to his SWAT brothers!
Thanks Terry, we do our best... always. :Big Grin:
Robert is a weapon himself... a downright monsterous fishing machine.

So far, Robert handled everything Poseidon have thrown at his spinning rig quite well. I'm waiting for the day he tangles with a 5 ft Leopard or a monster Flattie.
S.W.A.T. is always pushing the envelope out there, raising the bar wherever we go.
Let's fish together soon my Yoda. :Big Grin:

Awesome report! I just caught my first halibut of the year today at Malibu pier and I wanted to post it, but I am having difficulty starting a thread. If you guys would be kind enough to send me a message as to how to start a thread, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Raul!
Nice Halibut and report. May you be blessed with a bigger one for the release.

Wow, three reports for the price of one. :Dancing Banana:
Very nice bro, you do live the life. :Envious:
Too tired and lazy to write separate reports... lol

Great read and pics. I really enjoyed the reports. Thanks
Thanks Rob, hope all is well with you buddy.

Awesome report. Someone already said it but your mystery fish is indeed a pipe fish. Was it snagged? Would love to join you guys down there sometime. Have never caught a calico out of the surf before.
Robert reeled in a chunk of kelp and the fish was wrapped up in it. He saw it squirm away and snatched it out of the water. Pretty cool looking fish.
You are welcome to come down to fish with us Roy. We'll put you in the right spot that will give you the best chance of catching a Calico, the rest is up to YOU.

I wore a wetsuit a couple of times a few years back, until I figured out that I didn't really have to wade in that deep to catch fish.
Robert really did a nice job working that Toad Calico out of the kelp.
Things can only get better from here with the water warming up.

I find myself waiting to see your guys next report every time I finish reading the last one, great fishing guys, I hope to bump into you guys on the sand some day and watch your prowess in action!

Travis

PS. Sorry about the LC loss, I know the pain of losing 1 in a session, much less 9! :(
I find myself looking forward to writing the next report. :Big Grin:
I'm sure our paths will cross in the sand one day.
Losing the LC's comes with the territory. Part of the risks of fishing such a challenging area.
But losing so many was really surprising.

Great job on the slay Arthur, you guys seem to nail em every time. I'm so envious.

:UDaMan:

Chao.
Thank you, we fish hard and hope for the best...

Always a awesome report Arthur :Thumbs Up:

I also agree that the underwater pics are xlnt.
Nice Fat Calico :Thumbs Up:
'Beans Hole' Lol
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s177/garybulla/IMG_0096-1.jpg
DR
Seriously, I've never seen so many Beans in one area before DR. It was in your backyard.
Some of them were of the 20-24 inches variety.
John was burning the LC right past them and a couple actually reacted by chasing the lure and taking swipes at it. He hooked one for a few seconds before it popped off.
We also saw schools of baby Leos and Shovelnose too. The place was full of life.

You know me Binh, I don't do anything half-assed. If you're going to do something, do it right.
Bill was kind enough to ask me if he could use a couple of my Halibut pics in his new book.
Bill, if you are reading this, we miss your reports around here buddy! :Big Grin:
The Vegas condo is not very big bro, only a bachelor pad, but you are welcome to it whenever you want, just let me know when.

You are a warrior with an amazing attitude, amigo...
I second that sentiment Sid. :Big Grin:

What a great report....Glad you guys could all get out there and make it happen....with so much kelp to negotiate, did anything besides hardbaits produce?
Frank tried dropshotting for awhile, no luck. I was thinking of throwing a swimbait or a Kroc, but the LC's were getting hammered consitently so we stuck with it. Gave up NINE of them... ouch. :!!!:

Nice job out there guys! Great report as usual. :Thumbs Up: Wow Robert, you weren't kidding about that calico, that sucker's huge! And I like that kelp fish. Looks like you were all working hard with so much kelp and maneuvering thru wader-tearing rocks (yipes!). We saw a bunch of that dead kelp washed up on our outing today and I was wondering why.

Although you lost those LCs (ouch), it still looks like you all had a great time... and a nice amount of fish to show for it. Good idea about the recon... doing that may have come in handy for us today.
Let me see if I can recall the lost LC's count.
Robert = 4
John = 2
Mike = 2
Arthur = 1
Frank = 0
Total loss = 9

Sorry about the slow surf session on Sunday. As long as you learn something with every trip, it's worth it. Don't we wish they all could be epic session. :Envious:
I'll try to set something up for all of us to hit the sand together.
Need to see first hand how my future S.W.A.T. recruits measure up.

Hi Wingnut,

As always epic report.

JapanRon
Thanks Ron, not always epic... but we try.

BTW Art, Miss Westminster is looking good. :Envious:
Say hello to Lynn and ask her to give me her secret workout regiment so I can pass it on to Lauren.
Knowing to hit areas like this during a negative tide will increase your chances of catching the Bass Phuong. More structures will be exposed and it grants you access to some spots inaccessible during a high tide.
I remember that Corbina that you caught very clearly buddy. :Envious:
Lynn works out all the time, but she eats like a Rabbit too... lol

Great Meeting you out at Beans Central that day Wingnut, me and my buddy Eric were the guys out over at the end of the beach! Looks like you guys had a blast that day! Congrats to you and Swat!
Jason, it was good running into you and Eric out there. Congrats on your legal Hali, not easy to do in the big surf the next day. :Big Grin:
I'm sure that we will see more successful reports from you soon.
I'm sure your paths will cross in the sand someday soon.

WN,
Awesome as usual :Thumbs Up:, love all those butt shots, simply AWESOME!!!!!
Congrats yet again to MA on another fine PB,he is racking the numbers up. Cool exotic from the surf for S.W.A.T., niiiice! What a great outing Gents, Congrats to all.
Good to see you having fun with the gf WN, glad your not burning out on the exciting business adventure, and definitely glad you have time to squeeze in some S.W.A.T. outings. Take care, till next S.W.A.T. outing.

NG

ps I'll shoot you a pm soon.
I'm fishing as much as I can right now before the work project goes into full swing sometime in July. Once it does, I will be lucky if I can find time to fish once a month. But I will try to make time... I hope.
Thanks for the nice PM... I will respond shortly.
Glad to hear everything is well with you and Mike. We certainly miss your presence around here.
Can't wait for the surprise! :Big Grin:

Oh man, where to begin!?

This outing was by far the best that I have been a part of with my S.W.A.T brothers. Too much laughing between us all, getting rolled or completely getting soaked in COLD waters and my favorite, screaming YEAHHH BUDDY!!! after seeing a fish on and “I DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING” (inside joke) lol

The enemy terrain was heavily prepared for a surprise attack :Flamethrower:, they had their rocks recently finely sharpened and released their kelp to make it seem as if it was unfishable to prevent such attacks by us, little did the enemy know, some of us go to great distances to reach our enemies.

Robert, well first of all let me say that you my friend, are CRAZY! As Arthur and I were hitting the weedless area to your left, I see you going deeper and deeper into the enemy territory, climbing over sharp rocks and out of nowhere you end up in a super sweet spot! It showed too! You were nailing them bigtime. Congrats on your PB Calico, that thing is a monster. Awesome time sharing the sand with you brotha,. Oh, and dude, way to escape the surprise enemy hole that you actually had to swim out of , for a second there I thought I was going to have to cast out towards you and catch me a PB Murrieta Angler

Arthur, what can I say man? Awesome time once again. Great laughs, awesome fish and ofcourse, THE HOLE that swallowed you up man. That was insane! All I see is you coming at me (maybe about 10 feet away) and sayin “So Frank what do you………………………………” AND YOU WERE GONE! :OMG!: LOL. Man, I’ve never witnessed a moment so scary yet hilarious at the same time. I’m telling ya, the enemy was prepared for us this time. I had an awesome time brotha, cant wait to do it again.

John, slow day catching fish, but not with the laughs. I saw you slip off that rock by the skinny lol and you were trying to hide it HA! :Secret: Don’t worry bro, I almost fell as soon as we came down remember? lol , and were weren’t even close to the water yet! Great time being by your side brotha, lets do it again.

Mike, nice meeting you bro, that was a sweet catch on that kelp fish. I’ve never seen one before so when you pulled that out, that was a nice personal treat for me. Thanks for having my back when I said that I wasn’t going out there where Rob was at lol I guess he has two bigger genitals than the both of us put together. Nice multiple Hali’s and Baby Leo, way to stick it out man. Hope to see you more often.

All in all, what a fun day. Catching the fish is one thing, sure that is what most fisherman are out there for, but I think what people take for granted sometimes is the company that one is with. I have an amazing time with my brothers, to me the fish are simply, a bonus.

When we met up with Robert and he asked if we got to see the SWAT report, I couldn't wait to get home and enjoy the read. Awesome, awesome outing once again! Very nice mix of species. The kelp fish is one I haven't seen before. Robert congrats on the PB and having the hot stick.

Tried hard to talk the little lady into getting fitted for a new pair of waders so I can have an excuse to fish on Memorial Day. No such luck...

Waders!? She doesn't need any waders. All she needs is a pair of wading boots to match her swimsuit and she's ready to roll with the SWAT crew.

Guys, Guys, Guys!!!
I had a great time fishing with you all.

It was nice to finally meet you Mike, it's weird how some kelp will produce while others won't, even though we were only 15 feet apart. Next time don't forget your jacket, I know I was cold, especially after the wind started to pick up...:Cold Fishing:

Frank, I wish you would have tossed me a line, it cost me a good 15 minutes to get the water out of my waders and rinse out my socks...
Next time we assault that beach, you need to get out there with me, I think I got a total of 7 hits out there and would have been more if I didn't have to keep tying on another LC...

John, John, John!
It's always good to see you Bro, you bring a smile to my face.
I enjoy the horsing around with you and I look forward to the day when we end up wrestling on the beach, I know you'll take me, but I will give you a run for your money...:Big Grin:
I wish you would have brought in that Bean, that would have been cool.
I look forward to fishing with you again.

Arthur,
It was a cold one that morning but we all managed to pull out at least one fish that day.
I can hardly wait till we have 70+ water temps and butts galore...:Big Grin:
I don't know how you do it, with work, your private time, fishing...by the end of the day your eyes are beat red and yet you still have to go to another function...
I still haven't pulled those pictures out yet, but when I do I will post them.

Thanks again to everyone that showed up and to those who didn't, cause you all are in our thoughts...

Take Care,

Arthur,
Sorry I couldn't get out there until very late in the day.... I think I earned the title of SWAT Flake with that arrival time. Still, you guys had a very nice day out there. Even though the weather didn't totally cooperate, there were fish to be had! I'm digging those bass, and think the bigger models would fall to some BIG offerings. Very nice mixed bag man, and great running into you guys on the way out of there.

John,
As always my friend, you manage to pull some sort of prank on me... and I will figure out a way to get back at ya one of these days! Too bad those corbina didn't stick on the LCs, but you'll definitely get them soon.

Robert,
Congrats on a PB Calico! That is a very nice fish from the surf, and major congrats on the release. You're on fire as of late, and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you'll catch in the coming months once it goes WFO!

Mike,
Great to meet you out there man! We'll definitely have to hit the surf sometime soon, and I'm looking forward to seeing you on more SWAT missions.

Looking forward to fishing with you guys soon!

Always a good time when S.W.A.T. hits the water. :Big Grin:
There were so many "things gone wrong..." moments that morning right Frank? I don't recall a surf session where we took so many risks... not in a very long time.
I'm glad that we are all able to look back and laugh at them now. But in all honesty, at the time, it was a bit unnerving and we are all lucky that everything turned out okay. Thanks God for watching over the S.W.A.T. Crew.
We always have each others back. Looking forward to fishing with you again soon!

Bonus Report!
Santa Barbara - Friday 6/10/11 with the Fishing Yoda.

Headed North to fish with Mikey (Exfactor) on his fine vessel yesterday. :Big Grin:
Spent most of the morning looking for a good bite which never materialized.
Caught a few Lizard Fish, A small Calico, a small Lingcod, a small Smoothhound Shark, a Sole and a bunch of Sand Dabs. Fishing still a little tough up there, but had a great time conversing and learning from the best.
Thank You Mikey for your hospitality and hope we can do it again soon!

We hit the surf today with a couple of new S.W.A.T. members... keep an eye out for their report!
