I'm getting ready for my trip tomorrow. Headed to Catalina on an all dayer out of Dana Point. I have 30# on my bottom set-up and I'm going to use that drop loop set-up. Is a 1 ounce torpedo weight going to work out.......or should I up it to two ounces or 3? I don't salt fish too much and never use this set-up. How much line should be between the hook and the weight at the bottom? This is going to be my bottom rig and I am taking 3 other poles for the other presentations.......thanks for the help!

Hook 2-3ft off the bottom, weight depends on the current.

I use three loops/hooks inline when casting isn't necessary. Lets you use different baits at once to see what they are biting. I set 'em about 18" apart. As for weight, use as little as you can get away with with the current. Depth is a factor too. Dropping through 150 feet of water will give your bait longer to drift off target than baiting in 30 foot waters. If the current is cooking or the water is deep, you may want 2-3 ounces.

Call a local landing thats doing Catalina on a regular basis, Ask what the current and weights needed are..

I would take at least 6oz to 12oz, maybe even 16oz....
6 oz may seem heavy for shallow, but it will work.. Better safe then sorry if the current or depth calls for heavier weight.......

yeah 1 oz. is most likely too little. you'll be wrapping up everyone else's lines.

I bring 1oz all the way to 16oz torpedoe sinkers. You never know where you will wind up and what the situation is going to be. Better to have an not use than to not have and go DOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!

16 oz? Really? The most i've ever needed was 4 oz.

Though with this long-period south swell going on, you might need a bit more.

+1

you dont need every size weight out there just spread out the weight difference. such as a few 4, 6, 8, 12 etc... best bet is to just call the landing.

they're expensive on the boats if you don't have em bro. Also, only 2 hooks allowed per rig. A 3 way swivel works good 2

6-16oz. not really a debate among people that actually fish boats.
