1st off, I want to dedicate this post to all the veterans out there !
Those who gave their lives..
Those who sacrificed !
Those who to this day as we speak, continue to sacrifice so that we may have our freedom the way we do today….everyday !
To all you veterans….I salute you on our memorial day !
Headed out to Long beach Harbor with Mike’s Ocean on his boat for a little bay blasting…
He brought along his nephew Christopher..
On the way out heading through the harbor to the bait barge….I calmly said:
“why don’t we bet 5 bucks on the biggest fish !”
Mike, in TRUE smack talk form that made me proud…answered back:
“I’ll be HAPPY to take your money !”
I said: “anyone with such confidence would CERTAINLY go 20 bucks then !”
Mike said : “It’s ON !! !
We got some chovies…
I was throwing my ‘ol reliable 4” gulp alive minnow on a ¼ oz jighead !..
Mike and Christopher used LIVE chovies..
We hit a spot near the bait barge near the jetty…
HookuP !
The 1st skunkshaker hit the deck….as I worked the kelp line with the gulp !
Calico…nothing big….but a skunkshaka’ ! (didn’t bother w a photo)
5 minutes later….
HooKUp~ on my gulp again !
BREAKoFF ~
(Dayam ! real nice grade…. real weighty feesh ! too !!)
Oh well ~
We quickly decided to hit the inner bay zones around where Mike normally frequents….
Shortly therafter………

A nice solid flattie on the gulp…. Just a tad shy of legal but it’s what species we were really looking for !....

I tell him he can’t get in on the bet AFTER he already caught a legal halibut….!
Mike adds that if he want’s in…he can… but the fish he caught already does not count…
I looked over at Mike and this iz what I saw …!

Christopher looks on and follows suit with a short but yet another Halibut !
I follow suit with another short…..
I forget for sure but I think we pulled 7 halibut in that same perimeter in 20-30 minutes ! (sweet !)
Mike swung a few times but it seemed like the lizard fish just weren’t there for him…!
So…. he was left wanting as his nephew put on a show and gave him a schoolin’ lesson !
After Christopher and I laid out a few more shorts there, the bite slowed and the fish seemed to re-locate as the tide turned…..
Unfortunately the tide was now going OUT : (
I thought since I wuz on the board that I’d share my super tuper top secret method of jetty slayin’ ….unorthadox lures…..
I went on to speak about how there are ALWAYS Garabaldi round the rocks and sometimes U need to match the hatch….
A smaller matched presentation is what it takes !
I councilled Mike’s Ocean !
“The hot trick is to get a sweet flavor to your presentation”…..
So CANTELOPE is the KEY !....
Carve IT !

I showed Mike the “Go-TO” lure !

I was impressed…if there was a way to gauge social status from lizard fish slaying…

Then he rubbed off on Christopher and I…..all the bites that transformed to hookups all turned out to BE lizard fish for a while…
THEN….Mike landed a short halibut ! woo-hoo ! Goody….oh goody : )
Happy Happy….Joy …Joy !
Woo-Hoo….I thought the tides were changing for him….so to speak !
BUT then….
I saw the strangest thing …
Mike….determined to slay a bigger lizard fish than anyone..so he could win the bet…
Picked up a flute of some kind (or Pe’to’ as they say in some languages)
Started playing a tune like the Pied Piper !
LEADING all the lizard fish to our zone..

Bite after bite after bite…
We must have collectively got bit over a few hundred times but hard to hook them…!
They loved Mikes song so much that one of them had it’s mouth wrapped around his anchovy nowhere near the hook and didn’t let go and he reeled em up like that !
I think they all just wanted to be around the Lizard KING !….Pied Piper ! stud !

As Mike played the flute….I tried to jam along with him on a pelican !

Didn’t quite work out playin him so I thought I’d give him a shot at the microphone…
The pelican seemed to have a little stage fright ! So I helped him face the limelight !

Time ran short ….
I landed the 1st sandbass of the day and that turned out to be the last FISH of the day……!
That was 1 of 3 bass I caught and released but we really didn’t pound the bass zones real
Hard this day –stayed focused on the butts….at least Christopher and I were focused on the halibut (Butts) but I believe Mike kept eying up that man on the Jetty in a speedo !
And with that…..off home we went….
I collected up my 40 dollars from those poor suckers !
Uhh uhh….er…er….er…er. uhhhh uhhhh….
I mean:
I collected up from these cool fellows and we headed home.
Good times ! Good times !
Christopher : congrats on your 1st Legal Halibut …..way ta go !
