Skinner Memorial Day

Sun was up already by the time I left the house at 6am for a Skinner session. Very light boating saw about 7 trailers in the lot and some quail too. Launched and met up with “P.A.W” and partner in the main channel to discuss a.m game plan and would meet up later in the day. Dropped a couple of lures down on the DR to maybe dredge up a striper or two out the main channel worked all the way over towards Ramp 2 channel with nothing, and saw a boil here and there too. While trolling with the transom mounted trolling motor I bumped into some shoal water right side of the channel opposite side of R#2. Did not see an orange bouy but than again I wasn’t paying attention to my FF at the time to see immediate depth. The minn kota flexed and luckily my main motor was up and no damage to anything else- At the same time I had to get my DR rig up so I would’nt lose my KPN skinny shad-success. It was kaos for a minute-after I got everything up I pushed off the ledge with my oar and soon was in deep enough water. Could have been a disaster if going any faster. After all that crap it was already 0800 or so and headed west to do the bait and wait thing.

My first stop would be my only stop for the day(besides hitting a reef. After getting the rigs down, I got hit within 5-10 minutes was down about 25’. After the 1st schoolie it went dead-and then I dropped them deeper I would estimate over 50feet to nail the better grade fish. I was sitting in 73 feet, water temp 67. My rod with 6pd test was pushing the limit had two main line break offs. 8lb p-line rig was good, and I run two feet of 6lb FC leader. Had some good line peelers today… very fun on the lite gear…
Rods in rod holders would be short bit, but if i sat the rod on it’s balanced point sitting off the rail the bites were there and all I had to do was get a “GDHKSET” it and it was on. Had two doubles which was a rush - my foot held the butt of the other rod while I battled one and netted it and turned to the next rod and reeled up a rat, but it was a rush! Felt good being at the ramp at 11:30 with limit, shared info with “P.A.W” and another boater to go get there fair share of stripey’s. Light boating pressure, water did go down a few feet from the last time I was there. “HuskerRod” was at DV, and me Rod were having a tourney, he beat my arse with 15+ LMB’s, nice job Rod. Nice job P.A.W on getting stipeys and bass today too!

Hey Vince, it looks like the quality of your stringer is a bit better than mine ended up. The feesh got smaller as the day went on. Hope your hull is unscathed!

Thanks Pat. It was a good stringer for me-gave 4 to our neighbor too. I have been battling the skinner skunk for a while. The old crestliner has been through some beatings since 1992 the alum hull was GTG. One thing I did notice on my F/F was that my low depth alarm was not set... I always like seeing those striper pics in the store- guys with DD's using oki or AC plugs back in the day- see you next time on the water man...
