Jim and I hit the water early and although it was 28 degrees and icy when we launched at 7:30am, it warmed enough and was another incredibly beautiful day on Big Bear Lake. Winds were very calm almost all morning and even in the early afternoon weren't too bad.
Jim had the same rigs as the 5-27-2011 report. I picked up a Luhr-Jensen dodger and ran a gold SuperDuper with a red tip behind it on 6lb test with 4 inline long thin lead weights (about an ounce total) about 75 feet behind the boat. My other line was leadcore (out 3 to 5 colors depending on how deep the fish were marking) with my jerry-rigged dodger and a gold kastmaster.
We started trolling very slowly (about .5 mph) between Big Bear Shores and the Observatory for about 2 hours. Caught a lot of small stockers. I got the first few and kept ahead of Jim in the counts all day.
We slow-trolled all the way west and started hitting around the SS Relief. I got my biggest ones there - 2lbs if I was generous. They were a lot deeper (15 to 20 ft).
Jim kept pace but couldn't get ahead. We worked the west end for a big circle picking up a few, then worked the area near the SS Relief again.
I topped-out at 11 in the boat. Jim had 7 or 8. I had another 4 or 5 that ripped their lips before I could get them in the boat and Jim had 3 caught on the line, but got off before making it in the boat.
Good day of trolling!! Jim's probably going to hit it again Tuesday.
I'll have to wait for June 11-14 before I can hit it again, and I'm looking forward to some good tubing on the fly.
Some pix below - nothing to impressive.
Cheers!
Eric
