This is the reports section, and right under your post, is a report from Newport as of this morning.

Cuda bite is really hot right now. Even 1/2 day boats are catching limits. The report should help you out a bit.

This should help you get an idea on what's biting right now: http://www.sportfishingreport.com/pages/docktotals.php

Good luck,
Kevin

Sorry I didn't put my post in the right section. Also, I saw the report below mine, but I was looking for more of hints/tips on how to catch the fish rather than an actual report. I appreciate your advice.

Well first of all I would recomend 2 rods. The first one for bottom fishing(dropper loop w/ torpedo weight). And the second for topwater bite(cudas). They'll hit live baits on top with no weight(flyline). As far as line test you can get away with 20# for bottom, and 15 for topwater. If your good at casting, try throwing some surface irons, whatever colors you got.

Good luck, post pics later.

THANK YOU! I will be renting rods, so I will make sure I rent 2. I'm assuming they have the pound test I need on it. I'm also buying a "tackle package" so I would hope that would be good enough for all the tackle I need. And from what I understand all the bait is provided on board. I will keep you updated after Thursday.

Thanks again

Looks like the Cudas are showing back up at the Flats. renting two poles isnt necessary. Just rent one and have a deckhand help you rig up. For the cudas use a heavier Iron. Tady AA, Tady 9 works well. Colors dont really matter but if you must ask, pick up a blue/chrome, birdshit, dorado.

The cudas disappeared from MDR so im assuming these are the same fish at the flats. These should be the big Gars.

as long as you can cast, and have the right iron, and the cuda are around, its really not too hard to catch them

GD advice for the day iron fishing, especially with cuda:

As youre reeling your iron in, and you get bit, DO NOT SET THE HOOK!! You will lose fish this way. JUST KEEP WINDING! One of the reasons being is that the cuda will, a lot of times, bite the jig sideways.....if you swing, you will pull the jig out of its mouth..if you keep winding, the jig slides down, hooking the fish....KEEP WINDING, AND DO NOT "PUMP" THE FISH, you will lose fish this way too... Keep your tip up, and wind!!

I like the Salas 7X surface irons (if you're comfortable with casting conventional reels).
Salas 6X Jr. for yoyo.
